So far so good

It was minus -10C (-23F)  when I went out to start the chores yesterday morning.  And the animals were handling it well. Double rations and lots of extra bedding seems to be working so far. winter-002

By lunchtime we  were above zero. Which was nice. Do you remember me saying the other day that getting up to freezing was nice.. freezing point is 32F!

Now getting above zero is a relief. winter-024

I did the rounds, collecting the pig food and visiting the old people.

When I got back home with all the pig food a Christmas package had been delivered from my son and his family.  Guess what they sent me!

winter-050

Cramp-ons. Just like Viv and Claire recommended. What a son have I. He told his wife that he didn’t want me to be falling again. She told me not to get too confident. No running on the ice, she said. Oops, I said. As I had been doing exactly that!  They are wonderful. Liberating. I can leap tall buildings in a single bound. I am so much  more in control.

Thank the Gods for sunsets in the winter. We need the colour.

This morning it is cold, with a wild wind that is sucking the heat out of this old house and snow is  forecast. Winter I guess.

Have a lovely, lovely day.

Love your friend on the farmy,

celi

  1. Peder and I both have those clamp-ons for shoes, although a boat would be more useful lately. Love the photo of that old house. I bet it’s beautiful inside … assuming that previous owners haven’t removed its character.

A very happy weekend to you, c, and to the farmy.

  2. Good man. So pleased you have ‘chains on your tyres’ at last! What car are you driving on your rounds? So glad you have a pop of colour at the end of your cold days. It is going to take a long time to convince me 1 degree over freezing is warm.:) Laura

  3. Hi Celi,
I just discovered your blog and am loving it. It is cold here too this week the past 2 mornings it has been -40C! I mixed meal worms in the birdseed to help the chickadees bulk up. Supposed to warm up to -17 today, hopefully.
    Stay warm
    Lori

    • Oh No, Lori, that is terribly cold..and when it stays so cold it is hard on the animals and birds.. which reminds me i have not fed my wild birds yet today, i had better get busy.. Welcome to the Lounge of Comments .. and thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself, I Love to know who is reading.. c

    • At least now you can tuck yourself back into bed with a hot drink and your poetry and give in the the fatigue.. take good care..how exciting that the package is so close!! c

  4. Why are they called cramp-ons.i would have thought clamp was a better idea
…now that it a much better idea for somebody who goes tearing around on ice…well done to Son and DIL.

  5. No running Celi! But power walking in the new cramp-ons is probably okay! It’s hard to slow you down my friend! xo

  6. What a brilliant son. Snow chains for your feet! You’ll feel so much safer. I’ve known people take the soles off an old pair of spiked running shoes and fix them to the bottom of their boots, but this is much more stylish!

  7. Good Morning!!! Oh I love those great contraptions for your boots!!! Be careful when leaping the tall buildings in a single bound!!! LOL You know…some ski poles would really be helpful when you are out and about!!! I love mine! When I am not skiing I use them for walking out to feed the kids!!!
Nice photos today! Couldn’t go get our puppy…sigh…so disappointed. Roads are icy and blowing snow. I-29 was closed and finally is open but conditions are terrible. 94 is just as bad. Bah humbug.
Temps are sooooooo cold. Yikes! Yep. Mini-ice age here on the frozen tundra. 😦
I don’t know when I will be able to bring her home. Ach ya….
Hope you are doing okay over on your side of the plains! I know old farm houses are difficult to keep warm. My in-laws live in one. Drafty and they use oil and electric heat to keep it warm. We put plastic up on their windows to keep out the cold drafts. Easy as pie. Just put it up with a hair dryer! Can’t even tell it’s there!!! 🙂
It is like Southern Florida in their house of course!!! They are old and can’t take the cold like they used to. Retire to a warmer climate??? Nope! Farmers love their homes. 🙂
Take care and get some ski poles! 😉 They will go well with your Cramp Ons!!!! 😀
    Love to All!!!

      • Morning mere, i have a shepherds crook that i have been carrying for years, it serves me well. So sad you cannot get your pup yet, that must be deeply frustrating. The temps up your way are unbelievable.. c

        • The roads are sheer ice! Got so much icy rain yesterday and last night and now the temps are dropping severely! Good grief! 😦
