How to make dog biscuits for pigs

“Well!” I hear you say! “Treats for Pigs?”. But every good pig deserves a treat – Especially Our Sheila who survived the Big Chill with A Plomb and the easiest way to train a pig is with treats. Sad but True.

I am the same.

Here is the recipe:

  • 2 cups wholemeal flour
  • 1 cup oatmeal (everyone likes oatmeal)
  • 1 egg (because I have plenty)
  • 1/8 cup flax seeds (I put flaxseeds in everything because they are a happy seed)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey (HONEY!)
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter and some loose peanuts for fun.
  • 1 cup of hot water

Mix, roll out, cut, bake at 320 for an hour, then turn off the oven to dehydrate in the cooling oven. Then turn the oven back on to roast Misky’s roasted potatoes at 400*, (you must try them, they are sublime) but I forgot that the piggie treats were still in there cooling. But all good.  By the time I rescued them they were  just crunchier.  This is what Ton told me anyway.  He likes peanut butter. And he loves these treats.

But Boo (Blue) Bad Boo always wins.

Or at the very least – wins a Stick. ( I have to say, that this boy is looking less and less like a pure bred Blue Heeler by the day) .. ah well.

It was a hard day yesterday . A good day. Very cold.  But we were digging out. Each door and each gate had to be released from its frozen bondage. Everyone was returned to their Pre-Storm quarters with their gates to the outside.  Slowly we all resumed: At-Ease. The cord you see running behind Boo (above)  is to the lamp above the tractor trying to warm the mechanism so it would fire.  That did not work. So Our John took up an old fashioned shovel, and like his forebears, dug himself out all the way down the lane.

It took a long time. A long long time. But one man and a shovel can accomplish an awful lot. If he wants to.

And a sensible woman leaves a man to his work at these times. As a sensible man will leave a woman to her work when she is on a mission. Men need to be men too. As much as a woman needs to be a woman. This is where our strength lies. In allowing each other their strength.  In supporting and lifting the strength of others. Picking up where the other falters. This is how a team is built.

Even a team of two is very strong. And a team of one is honed to a point. Have a wonderful day.

  1. not that you would have reason to use one enough to justify the purchase, but mister pencilfox has a diesel-fuel forced-air heater for his tractor….he covers the tractor with a tarp, and aims the heater at the tractor. another trick that old alaskans taught me 20-something years ago is to carry wood-stove coals in a bucket to place under the engine area of whichever vehicle or tractor one is trying to start up….

i love that sheila. she’s my favourite on the farm. except for blue boo. and marmalade. and YOU.

    xo

  2. Aren’t we all better trained with treats? Works for Preschoolers…just have to be choosy about the kind of treat 🙂
You sound ‘lighter’ this morning…it’s a good thing to be past the Worst Of It. One more too-cold day here, then I can send the Littles back outside!

  3. Seems like everyone had the chance to relieve their cabin fever yesterday 🙂 except for Marmalade Kitty who chose to be warm and sensible! Laura

  4. That Boo! Even though he is looking less like a heeler, is a sweetie! He is part heeler, that’s for sure! We are taking a breath down here too! So wonderful not to be so cold, all of us!!! xoxoxo

  5. Glad you are getting dug out and kind of back to normal. Lets hope this thaw lasts for several weeks – only 7F here at the moment but supposed to get to 35F later on! Have frozen pipe in downstairs bathroom, but that’s ok getting lots of exercise running up and down the stairs to use the one up there!
Question – I have frozen eggs too, what do I do with them? Are they safe to eat (they are cracking as they thaw out in my kitchen),

    • I would say no, the the bacteria on the surface of the egg shell is being allowed into the egg. with that slow cracking.. i feed all the frozen ones to the pigs though and they are no worse for it.. c

    • You can bake with them. The high temperatures and the length of the heat will kill off anything bad in the egg. Whatever you do don’t eat them sunny side up! If the shell doesn’t crack, they’re fine.

  6. I think you could probably train me with one of Sheila’s treats… I quite see Ton’s point, crunchy is good. If it was cooler here, I’d be tempted by the potatoes, too, but right now it’s salads, fruit, cold meat and icecream weather. We are promised thunderstorms till the end of the week, starting tomorrow. I knew that turning on the sprinkler would bring rain….

      • We have rain here, a few hours to the south of you Kate, over the border…..lots of rain, lovely rain, my tanks are filled again and it’s cool after days of very high 30s C. and sticky yucky humidity. Hope you get your rain soon.

      • Raining as I write this in bed with my morning coffee… No hose this morning! Now all we need is about 3 more days of the same thing. Of course, it’s only raining because I got the sprinkler out last night…

  7. I’m pretty sure we didn’t dip below zero last night, HOORAY. We do the same as Mr Pencilfox using the tarps. Only we use propane tanks (like you use on a grill) with a heater attachment on the top. We have mixed results on windy days but have managed to successfully get diesel trucks going. I’m sure John knows this, but if the tractor is a diesel it will probably need a new fuel filter soon. Most times when the fuel gels and even after it thaws, the fuel filter will get clogged and it will not totally unclog making for a poorly running tractor.

I’ve always though Boo was a not a purebred. His head is too broad, his body is shaped wrong and that pup has a lot of leg under him. He sure has the heeler coloring though. I wonder if maybe he has some boxer in him. That could explain the tail dock as some breeders still do that.

I am wondering how tall is Sheila at the top of her back? I think she has moved into hog status. When I was a kid the really big pigs were always referred to as hogs. I love her coloring and personality. Hopefully she will be a calmer mama than Charlotte.

I didn’t throw sticks at the kids yesterday but I sure wanted to. School was open today so the 2 of the surly ones are there. The 17 yr old is especially surly as he didn’t get to drive today as we are short a vehicle so the mom limo was in service.

    Thinking warming thoughts.

  8. Everyone looks like they’ve been let out on the last day of school. I bet the dogs were stir crazy inside, so it’s always a joy to see them run off all of that energy. And yes, snow shovelling is a long, sweaty job. But looking on the bright side, he won’t need a gym membership.

It must be treats day because I’ve also been busy making homemade suet balls for the birds in our cottage garden. The start of a freeze should arrive here by Friday, which is a good thing as otherwise I was considering getting a boat to go to the shops. 🙂

  9. Good to see things looking up and everyone out and about. Marmalade is growing like a weed and looks bigger each picture we see. I’m so glad he still loves his Boo Nanny! I must check out Misky’s potatoes, and I’m feeling a risotto in my future after reading about yours will kale a while back. Have a lovely day, miss c.
