Your voice echoes when there is snow in the clouds

Yesterday it snowed again. But it was a gentle sweet silent snow that did not last too long. But the clouds sat heavy. Heavy clouds breathing light snow. Like kind gods.

A benevolent uncle kind of snow.

I set about trapping and catching the frostbitten chickens who had run off to the barn before the Bad Storm of 2014, so I could release them  back into the warm chookhouse.  Not the roosters though. The fights would be terrible. And I am not a betting man. So the roosters will have to continue sleeping with pigs.

Evidently there is a lot to be said for having a little one..

So says the very old grandmammy chook.

When Boo plays with his Marmalade Cat, he always holds one of his toys in his mouth.  So when he gets the biting feeling, it is a blue whale and not his kittens foot in his mouth.  I find this interesting. Because this kitten plays rough!

The best time to catch chickens is at night fall. Five of the worst afflicted are now back in the chook house.

Look at that fat cow. Queenie Wineti. Though still technically a heifer. All that extra feed during the cold time is showing. Or is it a calf that is showing? I do hope so. I know the blood tests said both Queenie and Daisy were pregnant but I will be so relieved when I see  the physical evidence of a pregnancy.

Today the forecast is for rain. Rain. RAIN?

Have a lovely day.

Love your friend on the farm,

  1. Celi, I hate to be a “Me too”, but, me too! (What the Snow Woman said.) 😉
On the subject of chickens and frostbite… I think when we move my next batch of chickens will have smaller combs. We don’t get the cold like you, but below freezing, even if just a few degrees will produce frostbite. Poor chickens, in weather like this not even the Vaseline helped !

  2. Here’s to fat cows! I do like writing those words – kind of naughty but true. and you have your own bird cage too!
The temperature is at last dropping here – it’s been so mild, temps at 11/12 degrees – the garden and its gardener are confused. Let’s hope the rain is a gentle rain to clear things away.

  3. Poor chooks, their beauty is a little damaged. It must be a little like going out in the snow with no hat on – your bare head and ears really cop it, while your cozy coat of down and feathers keeps the rest of you warm. Today, we had rain! 64mm in a few hours. The garden is looking dazed but happy. I’m happy because I don’t have to use perfectly good drinking water to keep the plants alive. I’m even happier because it was only 26C instead of 30-35C, as it has been since Christmas. I wore sleeves! I didn’t need the air conditioning! The Wet has finally arrived…

  4. Watch you footing in the SLOP! Have a great weekend. Did you see my icy beach shot well we will warm up as well with lots of Stuff falling from our skies I think I would rather be back on the frozen beach :

  5. I hope you have a warm downpour to wash all that white stuff away! How are the snow-shoes by the way?

    • Yes, it is. When I call to the dogs when there is snow in the low clouds my voice sounds like it is in a bell. Melodious. And I look at the tin shed thinking did it echo? And it does. It is a very cosy feeling. I am continuing my research.. c

  6. Yay, above freezing … please caution Sheila it is not quite time to bring out the shorts and sunnies yet 🙂 Laura

  7. Is Marmalade Cat a boy or a girl? He/she is almost grown! How quickly they change when they hit adolescence. And I wonder, will it be neutered? I’m just curious because I hear that often diminishes the aggressive tendencies, although I know Boo and Marmalade are just playing. Those two have a remarkable bond, especially given that Boo is a male. Loved the pictures.

    • yes he is a boy and yes he will be neutered, aren’t they sweet, john came home today and i was out and he found them both sound asleep cuddled up together.. cute… c
