Your voice echoes when there is snow in the clouds

Yesterday it snowed again. But it was a gentle sweet silent snow that did not last too long. But the clouds sat heavy. Heavy clouds breathing light snow. Like kind gods.

A benevolent uncle kind of snow.

I set about trapping and catching the frostbitten chickens who had run off to the barn before the Bad Storm of 2014, so I could release them  back into the warm chookhouse.  Not the roosters though. The fights would be terrible. And I am not a betting man. So the roosters will have to continue sleeping with pigs.

Evidently there is a lot to be said for having a little one..

So says the very old grandmammy chook.

When Boo plays with his Marmalade Cat, he always holds one of his toys in his mouth.  So when he gets the biting feeling, it is a blue whale and not his kittens foot in his mouth.  I find this interesting. Because this kitten plays rough!

The best time to catch chickens is at night fall. Five of the worst afflicted are now back in the chook house.

Look at that fat cow. Queenie Wineti. Though still technically a heifer. All that extra feed during the cold time is showing. Or is it a calf that is showing? I do hope so. I know the blood tests said both Queenie and Daisy were pregnant but I will be so relieved when I see  the physical evidence of a pregnancy.

Today the forecast is for rain. Rain. RAIN?

Have a lovely day.

Love your friend on the farm,

  1. Outside – inside!! Love the bluish toned gentle photos from the outside . . .such peaceful photos . . . and for my money Queenie’s tummy is bulging with one growing calf and not excess calories 🙂 ! Boo and Marmalade – no, we won’t ever get tired of their shenanigans and is Boo really such a gentle person inside as to bite down on a toy rather than snap at the growing roughness and strength of Marmalade . . . feel like giving him a virtual but big hug 🙂 !

          • Umm, actually I am being quite ‘naughty’. Put on a special offer of paid TV [22 channels for ‘Seniors’ for next to nothing and all actually very good!] for a year as a Xmas present and I am pushing work aside to ‘live’ on the Food Channel and the Lifestyle one for architecture and design 🙂 ! Hmm, oh BBC news etc too of course!!!!

  2. hate to be a downer, but… sometimes excess weight on first calf heifers can cause calving problems. sorry

    • She has always been chubby, low to the ground and round but they have no grain, only good hay.. So she is not overfed.. hopefully we don’t have problems.. that would be a downer.. c

  3. What a horrible rainy day today turning all that snow into slush. I hope you were able to keep your footing because slushy snow is slippery.

Hope your chickens are all okay and that you’ll have some nice calves come spring. Well I assume they’ll be born this spring.

  4. Must “second” what “The Daily Cure” said … the bond between Marmalade Cat & sweet Nanny Boo would make a lovely children’s story book. Illustrated with your lovely photographs, I have to think it would sell like hotcakes. I know I’d buy a copy or two. That could be prove to be a lovely way to fund another project on the farm. Thank you as always for brightening my day!

  5. It’s so hard to wait to see the “evidence” of pregnancy! I expect Daisy deer to begin showing in April and May. With deer, the fetus stays very small, not growing much at all, until late spring when food is bountiful and the doe begins eating a LOT. Great photos Celi… I love this daily walk on your farm!

  6. This is a fascinating post as always. I love the photos of Boo and Marmalade and the one of the cows dining where the car engine should be. Thanks goodness for benevolent snow and a forecast of rain to help wash it away.

  7. *argumentatively* No, it doesn’t, because I don’t go where there is any of that!
Boo; I’ll just pretend this is the pesky cat I’m chewing. If only I dared …

  8. I think Boo is such a babe and very smart too, that Marmalade cat is so lucky to have him as best friend 🙂 My little dogs go and get toys when they are feeling overwhelmed with excitement and mouth them in much the same way, much better than chewing on my fingers 🙂
