Sticky Face.

I thought I would be clever and upended the somewhat empty frozen gallon flagon of molasses, jammed it into Daisy’s feeder so it dripped into her hay and let them fool around with it for the day. OOPS!

Then leaving Queenie to clean up the last of it Daisy went outside to bury her head in more hay. Well you can imagine the result. She did not want anyone to see the result actually. But we can imagine it. I am just hoping that she and Queenie will clean each others faces, though their faces are frozen, we are below 0F now.  Most unfortunate for a cow with sticky mollases all over her face.

Son of The Son of Neanderthol Man seems very proud of his war wounds from the Winter  of 2014 which is by no means over.

Tui has not lost a foot, she is just shifting on her feet, warming one then the other. We had blowing cold here yesterday. That gritty blowing snow, that whites out the horizon. No-one went outside voluntarily yesterday, not even the sheep.

Can you guess who is who. (Mama is off screen, she prefers to eat by herself around the corner in Senior Splendour). So you can choose between Minty, Tilly and Meadow. My only clue is that Meadow is definitely pregnant probably with twins by the look of her.

No sunset last night.

Just coldset.  Set in Cold. But thats ok. After the cold chores I could retire to the warm house, a hot bath, a bowl of coleslaw, a glass of home made wine and thee.

They say it is going to be terribly cold again today. Very cold the forecast says. But the old people say every few years you get a winter like this. I am just SO grateful that I am not milking. (So is Daisy!)

Have a lovely day.

  1. I was wondering about the coleslaw (slightly less romantic sounding than the original loaf of bread in the poem you’re quoting!) and then I remember the Celi-diet. Cabbage with everything… I’m very sympathetic about the continuing cold, said she, sitting in 30C at 10pm, in a house where the water has been cut off for work on the water main in the road. No showers tonight; they won’t finish till 4am 😦

    • Your warmth is lovely for me to think of, since our windchill is -36F below! The wind is heaving things around, and ii need to go out again soon to set up another light for the barn flock. So do keep telling me about your warm weather, it gives me a wee break from this fierce cold. c

  2. Daisy and Queenie can be glad the Bees aren’t out flying today 🙂 Haven’t seen Hairy Maclairy for ages? Laura

    • Very good point! Bees on hay, on molasses, on cow! ick! Hairy Maclairy has gone to his new flock. I will not be breeding the sheep next summer (travel in oct 14 and then again in feb 15) so he would have been sat all by himself for over a year… no ram for us for a while. c

  3. Isn’t that hot bath at the end of the day the best? Or maybe it’s the glass of wine. Hard to tell. They both wash away another grimy day in the city. And taking your “slaw” lead, I just snarfed down a bowl of delicious brussels sprout slaw. Didn’t have cabbage, but it was divine: chopped BS’s, shredded parmesan, almonds, dried cranberries, etc. Good food is so good, isn’t it?

  4. From the left – Meadow, Milly and Tilly? The picture of the barn at “coldset” looks really really cold. I hope it warms up for you soon. Today we had lovely lovely showers and mist on the ridge and I had to wear a jumper at one stage (down from 40C yesterday) but more heatwaves are promised next week. All these things are sent to try us but we’ll survive. Joy and the goldens, Northern NSW

    • Morning Joy! Yes I think you are right. Meadow is slightly bigger than Minty and of course Tilly is a year younger.. They are a nice wee flock, they will be very grateful for their woolen coats this winter.. c

  5. My memories of molasses on the farm was a very sticky substance that even I didn’t mind the taste of… My Ayrshire bull would kill to get his share…

  6. That last photo of the latch looks as cold as we all feel (6 this morning, thank goodness no wind!)… Son of Neanderthal Man looks quite pleased with himself, don’t you think? 🙂
    Have a lovely day, C!

  7. Chores and milking are definitely on the chilly side right now. Zero yesterday a.m. with a soft 7 mph breeze and 13* this morning with a 12 mph breeze. I’m glad we usually don’t deal with your bendy tree breezes! Have a great, warm day Celi. Off to give warm water for drinks to help keep critters warm and check for eggs again.

    • The wind is definitely the killer, even the sparrows are taking shelter in the barn today.. I need to check for eggs more often too, they are freezing solid much to the pigs delight!.. c

      • They’re calling for windchills to the minus forties here by tomorrow morning. This seems to be the winter that never ends. I generally go directly outside as soon as I’m out of bed, before coffee or food, otherwise I might not go! It truly amazes me how cold the shovel handle can get. I always wonder how the small birds like sparrows manage to survive.

        • The barn is full of sparrows, they are lining the rafters above the lights.. which reminds me I must get out there and hang another heatlamp for the peahens, we have a terrible wind today.. terrible.. c
