Scrapper can look cute too.. sometimes.

Snow looks cute, sometimes, not when Man Meets Snow though. Then snow loses its lovely smooth forms and is knocked into shape, just not a shape I like. beer-019 beer-005

Yesterday was very cold, after  the weather had got over its problems at dawn it rose to just above 0F.  So we stayed in and bottled the beer.  52 bottles.  I can taste them in a week.

Not that anyone in the barn was neglected you understand.beer-047 beer-029

I had fully intended to take a shot of Meadow, so you could see how high and proudly she is carrying what can only be twins.  And Minty looked a little hefty yesterday too. But Mama was in the mood for the limelight.  Her breath caught in shafts of sunlight.

It was very cold.  Last night was even colder.

Good morning. Yesterday the lady who comes to help me now and then and who Knows About Breeding Pigs came out to have a look at Sheila. She will help me with the injections and AI.  She just loved Sheila and thinks she is a very fine looking pig. Tall and shiny. Sheila was on her best behaviour and did not try to chew on her pockets looking for treats. This good woman is as determined as I am to see her bred. And she brings considerable experience with her. First Sheila needs to finish her antibiotics. Then go on my probiotics  for a few days then we will proceed.

    • I know, the mud is going to be something else, and with all this moisture we are sure to have a rainy spring I think, but just a little warm would be so nice..not for a while yet though.. c

  1. Hi! Here’s the info I mentioned in a comment the other day about cold-season growing. If you search ‘geodesic dome and cold-season growing’ it will get you the video of the lady in Colorado I mentioned who grows salads and veg year-round in an unheated greenhouse that is insulated with snow. There’s also info on the Sustainable Smallholding blog about using ‘hot composting’ beds inside a polytunnel (think that’s called a hoop house in the US??). Sorry not to post links, and to post here not in the right section, but I’ve been having trouble getting this reply to upload so thought I’d try here! All the best, Lucy

  2. That sun and blue skies are so deceptive, looking so warm — but we know better. I cannot remember a Winter where we didn’t have a bit of a thaw by now. We’ll be talking about this Winter for years to come. Have a good night!

  3. Sheila is ‘a fine looking pig’; that comment must have been music to your ears. I like the sound of your vet and am sure you can have confidence that she can do the deed. The beer looks all lined up to give you solace!

  4. Such a pretty view in the dawn’s early light. Scrapper has grown up while we’ve been watching kittens and piggies, etc. Mama looks good!
