Sheila the Pig carrying her Bowl

I had just taken this shot of Queenie Wineti standing knee deep in snow enjoying the sun when I was almost run down by Sheila carrying her lunch inside. heat-09feb-031

We were on a pause, Sheila was standing in the snow eating her medicine mixed with shredded apples and carrots. I was standing in the doorway to her sunporch bedroom. I took this photo of Queenie then I lowered the camera (I always shoot through the view finder I have never got accustomed to that odd screen on the back of Camera house so I turn it off) . I turned the camera off with my clumsy double gloved fingers, replaced the lens cap and was placing the camera on its shelf in the barn when I heard a clattering run right behind me.

All in one movement I reached back for the camera, switching it back on as I turned and  raised it, taking off the lens cap with my free hand then without even having time to think I crouched, took this shot then leaped out of the way of a cold footed pig on a mission.heat-09feb-033

She raced past me with the bowl in her mouth and straight up into her straw carrying the bowl all the way to her window into the barn.( You have seen lots of pictures of her at this window watching me work).heat-09feb-034 heat-09feb-035

She placed the bowl gently by her window. Finished her carrot sticks. Then picked the bowl up and threw it through the window into the barn.

None of those are terribly good pictures but they are action shots, no time to focus, you know how fast a cold footed pig can move.

I swear if that pig could sit back on her heels and wipe her hands together that is exactly what she would have done.

The Bitter cold was back last night.

The chickens are deeply unimpressed. Though they have the warmest house of the lot.

It is getting light, almost sunrise.  Good morning.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. That’s amazing. I’d read that pigs were intelligent, but your Sheila is really something. 🙂 We’re having heatwaves and bushfires here in Victoria. I’ll swap some heat for some snow. 🙂

  2. My mother had an expression for when we were being smart alecs and she wanted to put us in our place: “You’re so sharp, you’ll cut yourself”. Sheila, I think, is in some danger of that same sharpness… She’s a very, very clever girl, but almost wiping out the source of breakfast is not a clever move! Imagine your reflexes had been slower, or you had been stiff with cold. You’d have been trampled by her cold and dainty trotters!

  3. That’s one intelligent pig; perhaps she thought Queenie Wineti was making a bid for her carrots? Great shot of her on the trot.

  4. Very fine shot of Sheila….love how she behaves. Whilst you are up to your knees in snow, a lot of France and most of the UK is knee deep in rain water. I wonder if our summer will be as extreme. It’s good to see that you and your flock are surviving your unbelievably cold spell. Still don’t like the hours that you keep:)

  5. bless her heart.
    i mean, REALLY.
she may be a big ol’ fat pig, but her heart is WAY bigger and WAY fatter than any heart out there.
and she TRULY blesses MY heart when i see her photos and read of her antics.
    bless her heart….

  6. I’m with the chickens, I am not impressed with last night’s COLD. Tonight is to be even COLDER and the we get a HEAT WAVE. At least for now the 20s and 30s qualify as a heat wave to me. I’ve even heard whispers of the temps reaching the 40s ABOVE. lol I think Shelia is telling you breakfast in bed is in order on these cold, cold days.
Queenie and Sheila (Daisy too) are such welcome spots of bright, warm color in the snowy landscape. Can’t wait for Queenie’s calf. Baby herefords are the cutest things.

  7. Sheila makes me laugh no end! And I love the placidness of that blessed pregnant cow. As if NOTHING could ruffle her. Nothing. I was like that when I was pregnant. What a lovely to state to be in. If only they could bottle that…Actually, they do. And people get addicted to it. Never mind. Celi, you have a lovely day. Warm, rainy thoughts from Milan.
