Out in the sun

We really don’t need too many words when the sun comes out.

Every animal seeks the sun. Which is good, as a solid dose of the sun is excellent for our health and well being. Not too much if you live back home in New Zealand but out here on the prairies of Illinois the sun is mild.

I felt unstoppable yesterday. The sun was a tonic.

dawn-028dawn-034Yes I am still wearing my clown suit and gumboots. It is warm but not that warm and I just don’t trust the weather. And Tima likes them. I made her a bed in the barn last night and she said Thank you very  much and good night, crept into her rubbish bin and went to sleep without another word.  She has other pigs grunting contendedly through her walls and I think she felt happy out there. Plus it is warmer. Though I hated leaving her outside. Had to be done. But she could have pretended to be reluctant. Do you want to see a shot of her little sleeping feet?dawn-057

There that is how bonkers I am!

My 100 lavenders came and were allowed a little sun themselves.  John s going to make lavender oils this year  so I will pot them up and grow them on for a while before I plant them. It will be interesting to see if any of my other lavenders survived this winter.

And now off to work for me. The dawn is definitely coming earlier! Well it would, wouldn’t it.

Have a lovely day.

  1. We had 20-minutes of sunshine this morning. I luxuriated in it. Good thing; it is cloudy now. Good afternoon to all and all and all and every!

  2. Spring is just now slowing arriving in New Hampshire. I can’t wait to feel heated through to the bone! Tima…what a sweetie pie. How sad to have to move her to the barn!

  3. I’m hoping my lavender comes back this year. It’s got a good chance, being on the south side of the house with a shortish block wall to it’s west. It’s made it thru three years, with some temps last winter as cold as this winter. I never had any luck getting it to grow in WV (zone 6), but it has done well in eastern Iowa (zone 4/5), Go figure!

I like the idea of the lavender with chicken or pork. The only recipe I’ve had on hand is one for lavender cookies. It’s a nice recipe, but a little variety would be good!

  4. Hi we have lovely sun today, all the cherry blossom is out and the trees are just starting to show some green. Love all your little mini me’s and Tima is a real sweetie, my daughters all want one now!

  5. Can’t beat a day with sunshine. 🙂 Glad to hear Tima took to her new surroundings in the barn. Cute piggie feet.

  6. What kind of lavender are you growing? In town lavender does well, out here in the sticks no. Sunny and warm here, too…..just the false spring before winter comes back until June. (sigh)

    • Munstead, and Hidcote. The ones that do well seem to be on the West side of the house, though I am not sure why, afternoon sun and shelter i think.. c

  7. Sun and lavender and pigs seems like a lovely recipe for life. Tima will be fine in the barn. My dog loved to be inside, in company, but at 9 or 10 pm she’d give me a nudge when she was ready to go out to the garage to her own bed.

  8. You mentioned a couple of posts ago that you were getting new bees, too. Did your bees not survive the terrible winter? I see the bees in Australia have taken a hiding due to the dry the passed couple of years, too. They are sensitive little creatures. So glad you are having sun again. xx

    • Yes, sadly the bees did not survive the winter, they lived through the worst of it then came out too early and died in one of those terrible cold snaps when it plummeted in hours.. so sad.. the new bees will be here early next month so lets hope the weather behaves.. c

  9. Oh Cinders, get the hot pink nail polish out for Tima’s tiny toes! 🙂 They are adorable! Did I already tell you about popping a sprig of lavender in to your honey for……drum roooollll…Lavender Honey! It smells and tastes divine! Those photos of Poppy and Sheila together are just pure love!!

  10. Hurray! The sun is coming your way. I’ve never looked at a [living] pig’s feet before. I keep learning more and more about animals from you. The little lavender plants are full of promise. What fragrance will come wafting out of them in the summer time.

  11. Loved seeing Tima’s fresh little piggy hooves. Now, we will know you are completely bonkers, if down the road we see nail polish decorating those tootsies. Glad to hear she is comfy in the rubbish bin in the barn with her fellow piggies. The other day I noticed in your photos that Shelia, who never looked huge to me before, now looks like a blimp (a very pretty blimp) when standing next to Poppy. Then when you had the photo of Tima side by side with Poppy, tiny Tima make little Poppy look pretty good sized herself. How nice to have 3 delightful piggy girls in small, medium & large. It would be lovely to see them standing head to tail for a group photo.
I think all living creatures gravitates into any sunlight they can find at this time of year. My cat gets mad at me on the mornings where there is no sunlight . It is as though she is convinced that on sunless days that I have turned off the switch that turns the sunshine on & demands that I flip the switch to the sunshine setting – I only wished it worked that way. We could all use a good does of vitamin D to improve our health & uplift our mood. Your little lavender sprouts are looking great. They will be good size plants in no time. Don’t forget to make some lavender ice cream it is heavenly to eat on a hot summer evening. My Mom made lavender oil when I was growing up. She used to put a few drops in the water bottle that she sprayed the ironing with. I used to go to sleep smelling the sweet lavender pressed into the pillowcases. A wonderful way to drift off to sleep.
