Yesterday evening I went out to count the chickens and shut their door and  check for minks and found a skunk in the nesting box. Sigh.  Luckily Boo came away when called. We retreated, Said Skunk took her leisurely leave and back in we went to evict the cats and lock down the coop.  On the way out we checked the  mink trap, released Lulu (the cat) out of the mink trap, reset the mink trap and went to bed.

This is what I found on the wildlife camera yesterday. bc-004

The date is not accurate (though I think you knew that already so maybe the time is not accurate either) .. but what are they watching? Are they doing a chicken dance for the camera? Today we are buying the chicken wire and finishing the chicken tractor and they can move in early.  It is not ideal, but better than dead.  This chook house has gone past its used by date.

I had visitors yesterday. My favourite kind. The children and their Mama kind. Tima was a huge hit.  She slept under the outside table while we lounged about and had a long lunch.  He crawled up close to everyone.  Snuggled in to the childrens feet and entertained everyone by finally sleeping with Boo. Then we made butter. visitors-034

Have you met Miss A? Below is Miss A’s Mama with her new friend.

I have decided that a little pig like Tima would be a perfect pet for an invalid. All she really wants to do is eat and then cuddle up with a person and sleep.  I can literally pick her up off the floor and place her on my lap and she will snuggle in and go to sleep. (Though this may be somewhat difficult when she is as big as Boo.)  No special food needed. Easy to house train. Maybe we can sell her piglets to hospices and old folks homes. We will design little portable ramps that the pigs can carry around themselves in special wicker baskets. And they can sleep all day with the people who want to sleep all day too. I think that would be  perfect arrangement. visitors-024

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. I am glad my mum didn’t think like you are about having more “pigs” that just eat and sleep or I would have had a thousand brothers and sisters 😉 Loved this post 🙂

      • 🙂 Stevie-boy keeps saying that we should get a pig. Not sure we have room with 1 naughty dog and 1 neurotic dog (mostly thanks to the naughty dog) but am enjoying your posts about piggy delights 🙂 I think you are right about pigs snuggling up and just “being” with people. Like dolphins (well…not really but you know what I mean) for therapy. Great idea as pigs are right up there in the smarts department. Make our politicians look like a bunch of slinking minks…wait a minute…they ARE a bunch of slinking minks! mutter… mutter… mutter…

        • Mink politicians are a world wide phenomena. I do know what you mean and these kunekune pigs have huge eyes. The eyes are pretty important I always think.. speaking of pigs i had better get back to work.. c

  2. I was laughing to myself picturing grown-up Tima at 200 pounds climbing into your lap & squishing you. If only pigs like Tima would just stay that small for life, they would make great housepet & therapy piggies. The glitch is that they grow up into good sized pigs. I’m sure Tima will be just as lovable, but a little too big for a house pet. Now if some crafty animals geneticist could make a species of Kunes that maxed out at 15 pounds, I think they would become so popular that everyone would want to have one. Enjoy your sweet little Tima while she is just right for filling a lap because in the not too distant future she will fill a lot more than your lap.

  3. With the camera, you may learn things chickens do in the night that no one knows–LOL Tima makes friends easily, it seems. Glad you’ve had no more midnight visitors.

  4. OMG ~ a skunk in the nesting box , Lulu in the mink trap and the rooster doing a barn dance in the middle of the night! Look what you can find out with a camera and a trap!! Pity Boo can’t ‘talk’ English – think what he could tell you!!! Better luck tonight!!!!! Thinking of Easter eggs, you are about 1/2 dozen short every day, aren’t you!!!!!!!!!

  5. I recognize that visitor! Good that the weather cooperated. I bet the 2 of them had a wonderful time and the two of you had a nice visit. I see Tima enjoyed their visit. Good for you all!
A skunk in the chook house? Do you think that’s why you had no nightly marauder, or, is the skunk the chook eater? Either way, glad to hear you’ve had 2 peaceful nights and hope that becomes the norm again. Even better that no one or thing got sprayed. That is no way to end a day. Been there. Have a good night, Celi.

  6. Hilarious to see the chickens staring right at the camera! Maybe you need to borrow more of those cameras and place them in all the animal stalls? I’m thinking it might be very interesting to see what those characters are up to when you’re not looking.

  7. I like the idea of little pigs being companions. Mind you the only pet pig I came across was a big one that lived in the first house I bought. Bit me twice! And I had a lot of scrubbing to do before I could move in. But it was quite large.
