I love Sheila

Sheila my big fat pig who is not so fat anymore now that she is up and about in this better weather  and on her new slim show pig diet is the most wonderful Auntie to Poppy.  But she still tries to make a little time for me.  She is getting to be an old pig by commercial standards. Almost three years old now.

But I love Sheila more.

There is still not a lot of pasture, but enough to keep Queenie quiet for a few hours.

The chicken tractor (though I am calling this one The Tank as it is very heavy duty), is still waiting for its final covering of chicken wire. I will start it tomorrow after I top-sow another field. Not a moment too soon though as my somewhat reduced flock got into the vegetable garden this afternoon and the gardener was wild when he discovered the damage after work. ooops.

I hope you all have a lovely day

  1. I think I’m in love with Sheila, too! I have a question about your broilers you did last year. Mine are 3 weeks old now. Was thinking about putting them in the tractor in another week? When did you put yours in? We are still have nights in the 40’s so thinking it needs to be quite a bit warmer.

    • I would be tempted to keep them under a high a wee bit longer, are they fully feathered? I transitioned mine into a stock trailer for a week or so last year,(outside and no light to get used to the cold) then out to the field. Mine were on the grass for a month I think.. But I think you are right, 40’s is a bit chilly.. How exciting, our chicks arrive in a few weeks, it has been too cold even to post them so far!! so you are way ahead of me.. c

  2. Oh what wonderful pictures! The grass is greening and there are more chooks ‘left over’ by the marauder than I thought and after a long wait we saw Auntie Sheila [whom we love too!] in such a warm relationship with Poppy! Hip, hip etc “D !!

  3. What a magnificent chook tractor! Not too surprised it weighs a ton, but it should certainly do the job of keeping your girls safe. I think it should be named the Chook Mahal. I’m loving the photos of Sheila with her almost human cynical eye and sardonic expression. She’s definitely looking a little more streamlined.

  4. Hello! Is that a tornado shelter/root cellar I see in the background? Did you build it? If so, how? Would love a website tour of it someday. We have a cabin in northern Minnesota that we plan to retire to someday. It is a slab home so we would like to build a shelter to escape to if a tornado finds its way to our area.

    • It is a very very old root cellar, left over from the house that was here way way before we came, we have found traces of it so suspect that the root cellar must have been close to it.. how lovely to have a cabin to retire to.. c

  5. Ooops is right about the gardener!!! No doubt you reminded him that they surely left some fertilizer behind! 🙂

  6. Just think how delicious those eggs are going to be 🙂 Good to see Sheila again and Old Dog, alongside Chook Palace. 🙂 Laura

  7. Who couldn’t love Sheila? Each of your piggies has such great personality, I can’t get enough of their photos. Sure to bring a smile each morning :*)

  8. Oh that Pig – such mischief in her eye! Sheila is my current portrait subject, I shall post it when it’s finished. Catching that mischievous
    expression was the challenge!

      • I don’t have much but I still like to have something on the go, even if I can only get to it for an hour a week! Sheila’s been hanging around for a while now.

  9. Sheila and Poppy are my desktop background as of this morning! Definitely a great “awwwwwwwww” picture. I needed that this morning. Will there be wheels on the chook mobile?

  10. I can’t believe how green it is. It seems such a short time ago that it was deep in snow. You, and the animals, must be so pleased to be outside with sunshine and green.

  11. The Tank looks great. Did you design it? You may have to add an engine to the design! I bet Charlotte wouldn’t have been such a good Auntie to Poppy as Sheila is. Nice that S is getting slim. I wish I was! (yes, I know that should be I wish I were, but it doesn’t sound right). Sorry about your veggie garden.
