I got it wrong

This little calf does not want to be called Aida she  wants to be called Del.  She is so calm and so sweet, there is not one fussy bone in her body. She has no aspirations for the stage, and no interest in tragedy. She reminds me so intensely of my Aunty Del  that I have called her Del.  And then I ran into another problem. I could no sooner call my Great Aunty Del  just plain Del than fly to the moon. So this wee calf will be Aunty Del.  Aunty Del lived in the country is a small low ceilinged cottage and ate icecream at any meal she felt like.  She often wore pink and purple and plaid and sometimes all at once. She was a treasure. abba-071So there it is. Sometimes names just turn out that way.  One thing I know is that if you get the name wrong you must change it immediately. No time to waste.  The name Aida belongs to someone else.

Here is Aunty Del.  She sucked my thumb all the way home, standing just as calm as you please in the back of the cooking oil car.

So now we have a new heifer to be trained as another milk cow for when Daisy is ready to retire.  Often a milk cow will work with a family for many years but with Daisy’s recurring mastitis she may have to go out to pasture earlier than expected. However that is still a few years away.

Godot got so excited about being able to fly that he flew straight into the mulberry tree. abba-099

He is pretty hard to see up there but the view must have been wonderful as he was up there for hours. Later at dusk after he had found his way down and was intent on wandering down to the creek that is now a raging torrent, the dogs and I very very slowly herded him back to the barn. abba-045

Yesterday Poppy and Tima got into a fight. I am not entirely sure why,  no-one was talking, but it may have to do with the fact that Poppy does not want to share Sheila.

Tima was smacked on her very smackable bottom and was sent to bed.

And when she got to her bed she found a cat in it.abba-065 Marmalade is everyone’s friend though so no-one really cared.

The chicks and the ducks have been separated, (much to the chickens relief .. have you ever tried to live with a duck in a small space?)  and moved upstairs. The chicks are feathering out and  the ducks are huge. The chicks have graduated to the wood box on the verandah and the ducklings are in a bullet-proof pen beside Tima.  No mink will get in there. The new meat chicks arrival is imminent (maybe tomorrow or the next day) so the brooder tub needs to be cleaned out and prepared for the next batch.

Thank goodness the weather has finally begun to warm up.

Good morning.

I hope you are all having a lovely day.

Now, off to work for us all!

Your friend on the farmy

  1. There is always something fun and exciting happening on the farmy – new calves, baby ducks, baby chicks, fighting pigs, barking dogs, flying peacocks, etc. It’s like a reality show in the making 🙂

  2. Sometimes no matter how much you love a name, it just isn’t right for the critter (be it human or animal) in front of you. Del is cute little thing, just the right of amount of red and white. You might want to check her belly button for a few days as it does look a bit puffy. Her momma may have been a bit too industrious at trimming up the cord or it may have gotten a little infected. I was hoping you would come across a Brown Swiss heifer for your next cow so I could look at beautiful pictures of a Swiss. We use to haul bull calves (and a couple of heifers too) home in a Chevy Chevette 2 door model so I knew you could get her in your cooking oil car. Our trips would be about 40 minutes and every once in a while we would have one crawl over the seat and try to help drive. That was always an exciting trip.

    • Thank you Jeanne, yes I am watching it, I gave her a good inspection this morning and there was no sign of infection, she is in an absolutely pristine clean pen now and drinking well.. buying any kind of cow is very expensive these days, particularly recently so I am lucky to get a well bred heifer from a Momma with a nice tight udder. She has been vet checked as The breeders daughter is a vet, but i will keep an eye on her, thank you.. c

    • Bloody Nora! I actually say that sometimes you know!! Claire you are a breath of fresh air, must be all that sea air you are forced to inhale! c

  3. Aunty Del it is then! I like it. We once had a cat that went through five names before we finally settled on the one for him. Once we found the one, we knew and I think he knew too. Anyway, Aunty Del is adorable. Another beautiful addition to the farmy. Have a great week and good luck with the new chicks arriving.

  4. I love it! Glad we aren’t the only ones that transport livestock in the back of a car, in our case a Subaru Forester. She is a beauty, and that. Tima, oh my! Cute as the day is long. Sorry she got a smack for her sociable efforts.

  5. You really caught a picture of Poppy’s mouth wide open. I had no idea pigs have such thick lips! How exactly did little Tima get smacked? What with? And who smacked her? Aunt Del is a sweet name for her too. (from Delia?) Daisy and Del have a nice rhythm. So much going on I can’t keep up.

    • Oh no, it was a metaphorical smack o the bottom, I picked her up and took her out of the cows yard, she really should not have been in there.. Daisy and Del, you are right, I never thought of that.It does sound nice. Del is from Edel, which is coincidentally also one of my names. Cecilia Mary Edel. c

  6. She is just a little beauty C. Has she met the 2 bobbies yet and if so, what do they think of their little sister? That Tima…be still my heart! 🙂

  7. I saw the name Del and thought “Farmer in the dell”, but then….that just seemed wrong, so shooed it out of my head, but then it came back when I started to type. Sorry. She is beautiful….a perfect specimen, tho will need fattening up. 🙂 I thought the piggies were playing as well…would love to have heard all of the ruckus. It was nice of Marmalade to keep Tima’s bed warm for her tho. Good ole Marmy. Hope the peacocks stay out of trouble today!

    Enjoy your day!
