I got it wrong

This little calf does not want to be called Aida she  wants to be called Del.  She is so calm and so sweet, there is not one fussy bone in her body. She has no aspirations for the stage, and no interest in tragedy. She reminds me so intensely of my Aunty Del  that I have called her Del.  And then I ran into another problem. I could no sooner call my Great Aunty Del  just plain Del than fly to the moon. So this wee calf will be Aunty Del.  Aunty Del lived in the country is a small low ceilinged cottage and ate icecream at any meal she felt like.  She often wore pink and purple and plaid and sometimes all at once. She was a treasure. abba-071So there it is. Sometimes names just turn out that way.  One thing I know is that if you get the name wrong you must change it immediately. No time to waste.  The name Aida belongs to someone else.

Here is Aunty Del.  She sucked my thumb all the way home, standing just as calm as you please in the back of the cooking oil car.

So now we have a new heifer to be trained as another milk cow for when Daisy is ready to retire.  Often a milk cow will work with a family for many years but with Daisy’s recurring mastitis she may have to go out to pasture earlier than expected. However that is still a few years away.

Godot got so excited about being able to fly that he flew straight into the mulberry tree. abba-099

He is pretty hard to see up there but the view must have been wonderful as he was up there for hours. Later at dusk after he had found his way down and was intent on wandering down to the creek that is now a raging torrent, the dogs and I very very slowly herded him back to the barn. abba-045

Yesterday Poppy and Tima got into a fight. I am not entirely sure why,  no-one was talking, but it may have to do with the fact that Poppy does not want to share Sheila.

Tima was smacked on her very smackable bottom and was sent to bed.

And when she got to her bed she found a cat in it.abba-065 Marmalade is everyone’s friend though so no-one really cared.

The chicks and the ducks have been separated, (much to the chickens relief .. have you ever tried to live with a duck in a small space?)  and moved upstairs. The chicks are feathering out and  the ducks are huge. The chicks have graduated to the wood box on the verandah and the ducklings are in a bullet-proof pen beside Tima.  No mink will get in there. The new meat chicks arrival is imminent (maybe tomorrow or the next day) so the brooder tub needs to be cleaned out and prepared for the next batch.

Thank goodness the weather has finally begun to warm up.

Good morning.

I hope you are all having a lovely day.

Now, off to work for us all!

Your friend on the farmy

  1. I do hope there will always be great aunts like that in the world to inspire the young’ns . Aunty Del has a great legacy. Edel is a beautiful name, I’ve never heard it before. And, the Farmy today is as enchanting as ever. Love the pic of Marmy in Tima’s bed. We had a cat who’d sleep in the dog’s kennel.

  2. Pleased you changed her name, I was a bit sceptical about the whole Aida thing, but you know, your calf and all that. Still, Auntie Del’s much nicer, and she looks a real sweetie. Edel…that’s unusual, does it have a history? Marmalade in the pig’s bed…ha ha……..those cat’s will sneak a free bed anywhere….I found my littlest in my undies drawer yesterday…..not sure how she got in there!!

  3. When our daughter was born we had two names from which to choose, but the minute we looked at her we knew which was ‘her’ name. Names are like that. Love Aunty Del. x

  4. I must have been the only one in the Fellowship to have absolutely loved the name ‘Aida’ 🙂 ! Auntie Del is nice, but she is far to young to be called ‘Auntie’ methinks!! Have never heard of ‘Edel’, but love the sound of it [why not just ‘Edel’?] . . . . and she looks as if she will well and truly fit into the farmy!!!!! Hmm, looking at her face, Poppy should have gotten the smack on the botty, proverbial or otherwise . . . . . but all seems to be well, and that is the main thing . . . .

  5. She does look like a Del, Aida sounds like a big ol’ bossy hen. Percy was Cecil until I met him. These Kunes are something else, Percy tried to say hello to Otis the goat, Otis wasn’t too sure about it and leapt straight up and over. Now Percy heads for Otis as soon as I open his pen, I think just to see Otis jump! Now I’m doing to have that farmer in the dell song as an earworm!

    • Oh, but . . ., Aida was a slave, a Nubian one and as sweet as possible . . . . . if you were looking for the bossy one it would have been Amneris, and Celi did not bring that name up 😀 !!!!

  6. I love your funny names, which all have their own logic, and delighted at seeing Godot in the mulberry tree, looking so at home. Aunty Del has beautiful colouring, and has certainly come to the best of homes. Her name sounds very homely. Aida is a bit more like an opera star.

  7. What a pleasure it must be to get your work done when it’s warm– no tromping about in layers of clothes from head to toe. Sheila is so sweet, everyone wants to keep her to themselves. Marmalade was just keeping Tima’s bed warm for her. Aunty Del is a beauty.

  8. My sister’s name is Del and I have never heard of another. My kids call her Auntie Del of course. I will forward this posting to her as she loves baby calves and will appreciate the namesake.
