Fighting Roosters

Yes I know that technically they are called cock fights but  I think that is rude! These two have been fighting for days because they keeping calling time out and taking breaks. may-31-073 may-31-068

But oh my they look like they have been in the wars. may-31-062

Poppy managed to stay in her own field for a full day yesterday.

I have no idea what any of these little chicks are. They could not fill my order with what I wanted so very kindly chose (with my permission) from a few chicks knows for hardiness in extreme temps. The list was taped to  the box  and I disposed of the box without realising. So they are mystery chooks. may-31-029

The Lady Vet comes today may-31-009and these two bull calves will officially become steers. And Daisy’s Bobby will have his horns seen to .. he has already jabbed me with those little horns and they hurt!. Plus she is going to check Daisy over.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

I am at that stage where I hate everything I have written for the book.

Hopefully today will be better. Sometimes we just have to trust ourselves.  No that is not specific enough. I have to trust myself and the process.

Your friend on the farm

  1. Roosters fighting. Is that a spring thing? I have much to learn about chickens. 🙂 The writing will come together, I’m sure.

    Happy Sunday!

    • Yup it is a spring thing, one rooster always wants all the hens. There is not catching them, what would i do with them if I did catch them anyway.. they will sort it out!

  2. Rooster fighting. Pshaw. I’m of the opinion that all rudeness should be directed toward the both of them. Goodness me. Fighting on the farmy. Tsk-tsk.

  3. As a child, we had a person who raised fighting cocks near us. It was not illegal in the country here in Texas in the early 70’s. One day we were in the car and Dad said something about how he hated seeing those roosters tied up at their little dog houses and I replied yea, why do people watch wrestling roosters anyway? (I was 7). And the phrase has stuck in our family…. WWWR. World Wide Wresteling Roosters. Glad it is banned here now.

  4. Wow, at that age, it would seem that banding the males would be very uncomfortable. Here they cut the calves at branding time…..no vet, just guys with knives. It is a hard time for calves. Too bad there is not a shot they could give to make them shrivel them up. Mmmmm I know some men that would benefit from that, too. (lol). Roosters fighting? That is where a .22 rifle comes in handy. I agree your one chick looks like a barred rock. I am always amazed at how much you accomplish evey day. Celi, the wonder woman. Sounds like a book title.

  5. You’ll know I’m not a farmer from this question, but WHY OH WHY does castration have to be so brutal? Can’t the vet at least numb the area if not administer a local anesthetic.

    • I am lucky to have a vet for a friend but I would say when you are castrating multiple numbers of stock a vet would be just too expensive.. I don’t know.. c

  6. I have a few actual “gamefowl” that I have to keep seperated because they’ll fight till the death. My free ranging, mixed breed roosters will scuffle like yours occasionally. Silly roosters, don’t they have anything better to do? 🙂

      • I used to breed them for show. Now I only have one family and I’m breeding them to keep the line alive. I used to rescue birds seized from cock fighting rings. I love gamefowl. They’re some of the sweetest birds around, just very misunderstood (similar to pitbulls, my other favorite animals).

  7. C. Your writing (as always) will be brilliant! You’ve nothing to worry for. Marcel is losing his baby face! 🙂

  8. My niece’s little girl just volunteered my to adopt her kindergarten class’ three chicks. Hopefully they won’t all be roosters! Don’t need testosterone fueled skirmishes around here.
At least when my horse and mini donk were gelded my lady vet knocked them out first. My John had a hard time with that visit!

  9. Oh my gosh, your line about hating everything you’ve written really did make me LOL. I write for a living and I swear that the hating stage must be a part of the writing process. Or maybe it is part of being a creative type person. I turn in all my writing jobs with fear and embarrassment, but as Seth Godin wrote,”Vulnerable is the only way we can feel when we truly share the art we’ve made.”
