What if we did not need to sleep

As I bounce out of bed in the mornings .. and I really do bounce.. as John brings me my first cup of coffee on his way out the door between 4.30 and 5 am. PLUS I am one of those annoying Morning People -I sometimes wonder how much better it would be if we did not need so much sleep at all.

We would have the same amount of work but so much more time to do it in. No yawning by 7pm desperate to just Lie Down. Please anything, just let me lie down! If I could work merrily until midnight and still bounce up at 5am just imagine how much more I could get done! What if we did not need to sleep at all.  If there was no culture of sleep. If the whole world never slept. No-one even knew what sleep was. sunrise-005

What if we were to rest standing up like cows or horses or move about in the darkness like rabbits. Chatting in the inky blackness without fear. And seeing in the dark. I think seeing in the dark would be useful if we did not need to sleep. Or maybe they would have invented some see in the dark glasses that were a bit trendier than the night vision giggle goggles they have now. Those will never catch on as a fashion item I can tell you that for nothing.

There would be a whole other way of  living. Midnight snacks would be a meal. Living in the dark would be normal.  No-one would be scared of the dark. We could save all the house work for the dark hours. Lighting would not be needed. Our schedules would be completely different. We would shower whenever we were dirty. Play basket ball for fun at 2am in the morning. Everything would be black and busy but no-one would bump into each other. There would be no bedrooms. Imagine that – no bedrooms with curtains to pull and doors to shut so we can sleep. They would be called nap rooms because it seems to me that laying down would still seem attractive. There would probably be less babies. And we may not live as long. And we might be all insane but then insane would be normal. But there would be less crime, or maybe more as the case may be. sunrise-008

Do you wonder about those things?

Have you ever though that it would be useful to have extendable legs? Or little suction cups on your arms so you could carry more stuff?  Not velcro though velcro is so Tuesday.

This is what I was wondering as I was farming yesterday.

I hope you all have a lovely day. Just not in the dark.

I was feeling a little bit lonely last night so I went and read the Join Us comments page. (Above) I love that page. If you have not written a little in the Join Us Page feel free to have a look and maybe leave a message about where you are. It is a good page. Not dark.

  1. And we would even have time to lay in hammocks at the end of the day instead of continuing to work until dark! I’m ready for that!!! xoxoxo

  2. Oh no please, if we didn’t sleep we all would go crazy and do more harm to us and the world. When I worked I usually got 4 hours of sleep per night, not enough . There is nothing better than waking up in the morning, refreshed and ready to begin another day. Next week I have to deal with jet lag again ( 9 hours difference) yuck.

    • Are you going back to see your Mum? I hate the heavy jet lag feeling. They say if you get as much bright sunlight as possible (without sunglasses) when you get off the plane it helps your body adjust. I almost blinded myself doing that when I went to NZ last. c

      • I’m going next Wednesday, thanks for the tip . I’lll try it, I get there in the afternoon and will be driving on the Autobahn! For the last couple of years I take Ambien ( a sleeping pill) for three to four days, decreasing the amount every night. That helps .

  3. Ohh I would love extendable arms and legs, and maybe an extra couple of arms as well, would really help when I’m gardening, think how much faster I could get through those weeds! Love your thinking x

  4. More night owl than morning person here …. I love my electric blanket and duvet in winter but once woken up can’t lie in bed. That is where Blogland comes into its own, I can tour the world with a hot cup of coffee wrapped in my hands 🙂 Laura

  5. But I love my bed! I crawl in saying those very words “I love you bed” !! Glad you said we could have naps, so maybe I just say the words two or three times in 24 hours instead of once at night.
I am a morning person too, up between 4 and 5 every morning, no matter what time I go to bed. Love the mornings!
As for extendable arms and legs – yep my little 5ft 3in body could do with some of them LOL and some cushiony knees for all the weeding, and better finger joints that don’t get sore from the weed pulling! And hair that doesn’t look like I have been pulled through a hedge backwards from the humidity. And the ability to shake dirt off and out from finger and toe nails! Oh yes there are many things i would ‘like’ but really quite happy with what I have too!

  6. Years ago, I read a novel about how scientists engineered it so we didn’t have to sleep. Except only certain people got this quality–maybe it was bred into the human race slowly? (It has been awhile since I read it.) There were all kinds of unintended consequences to not having to sleep. It was an interesting story that extrapolated exactly as you have! Too bad I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the book.

  7. Oh I LOVE TO SLEEP, mainly because I am not a good SLEEPER…. I’m a fidgety sleeper after about 2 hours. I would so love to lay down and get a good 4 hours of deep peaceful sleep with out being sedated. (which this year I have been under sedation twice for dental surgery and I’ll tell you, that is NOT good sleep!!!!)

And NAPS, I love NAPS with my puppies. I could use one right now.

  8. I am a night owl…..the evenings and twilight are my favorite time of the day. I have also managed to corrupt my morning person husband. He used to get up at 4:30am, but now he and I and the cats sleep in until 8:30 or 9:00 am. No apologies, Not sleep? Impossible…I love my snuggly bed too much and a purring cat. I would love to be able to see in the dark, though. Then I would stay up longer. Unfortunately, even in the summer here, it is too cold to work outside. Mid 40’s always. I do wish I only needed 4 hours of sleep, though.

  9. Hilarious post- I always thought that we should have “Sleep stores”. One would go in and say
for example- “I’d like to buy 12 hours of sleep please”. You would then either use it all at once
or dole it out as needed! Have a great day- and keep bouncing- I am a morning person too.

  10. I’m a morning person too, not a chatty , annoying in your face morning person, just enjoy those early quiet hours when the world around me is still asleep …..I like to potter about and see what’s gone on in the night. And I do my housework at night, so when the day starts I can be in the garden or doing other things. I like the idea of extra arms and maybe a clone…..one of me could be gardening and one sewing or knitting. I do like to stretch out in my bed though and sigh wearily.

  11. I’ve just emerged from a wonderful night’s sleep and oh no, I wouldn’t be without it. Your imagination has been doing acrobatics, the high trapeze, the clowns’ act and the chimps’ tea party all in one. With a mind like that you don’t need to dream, you can do it standing up just like Daisy. Oh Celi, I never know what you are going to come up with next!

  12. I love my sleep, and bed, and am a very slow two cups of coffee before attempting anything morning person. And at Taylors Arm I love cat-naps on the verandah futon in the sun. A lot happens in my head while I sleep, at least… the G.O. says he’s never encountered anyone who dreams as much and like I do.
Once you get a few more Kim-like bodies staying at the farm that will help out with extra working body parts 🙂
