So is it sunny there? He said. (The hay man is a man of few words. The phone too small to accomodate any more.)
Yup, I answered. Lots of sun. We got 2/10ths last night. (Pause.)
Well, not too bad, he said. Woke me in the night, he said, thought the niece had flushed the toilet. Rain. Everytime we cut.
Ground was soggy to start with. I said.
Yup.
Should be ready to turn tomorrow. I nodded to the phone.
Yup. Your rakes a big one. Take the corners wide, he said. Start on the second row in. Turn the outside one over last. That’s a thick field.
OK , I said. Bale Saturday?
All goes well, he said.
Looks like it might.
Yeah well. See you Saturday then. Whats that noise?
Poppy biting Tima on the bottom to make her squeal. (long pause as we both listened) It’s a game.
Hogs. He said. Yeah, well. I’ll call you Saturday.
Yup.
We hung up at the same time. The farmer and farmer-ess both not too good on the phone.
I hope you have a lovely day.
Your friend on the farmy

That’s because we’re of a generation who use the phone for communication, not to the suck the breeze out of the air. Besides, when I was a child, a phone call was expensive – you didn’t do idle yammering. Happy weekend to you and the farmy, c!! xx
Do you remember how expensive international calls were? Shocking. And toll calls! Oh my.. am i sounding old? c
I remember those days of expensive calls, you wrote letters instead. Celia I saw lots of haw tractors and cloudy skies on Lake Kontanze in Germany, but no rain .
Yes, you’re sounding ancient. LOL!
Love the image of Tima squealing being chased by poppy so funny, have a fab weekend and hope the sun shines on you for the hay gathering x
LOL sounds very much like the conversations down here in the south. Except me and my contractor have to come to an agreement not to talk on the phone – he can’t understand a word I say (Brit accent too much for him) and I can’t understand him (bit of a red neck is our Tim). Some of the sayings down here make me chuckle though. Yup they do say “Y’all” quite a bit, but also “Good Day” when you say something that astounds them!!
Ha ha that is great.. the old codger says “Good Night” in a shocked tone. or even “Good Land”. I have no idea why… But now I see a pattern!
My mother’s family always said “Good Night Nurse”.
I had no idea! This thread is a revelation!.. c
I had a grand aunt who replied to everything with “I’ll engage you”, while nodding her head. She wore a hat with a tall feather – think peacock – and it seemed to extend the nodding action.
The plonker is enjoying himself a field with friends these days. Good for him. That’s quite a diverse group in that field and yet, they all get along with Queenie’s quiet supervision. 🙂 Poppy and Tima are now bottom biting pals? too funny. Have a great Fourth of July! We are doing small craft projects and giant jigsaw puzzles here in Colorado during my visit, trying to stay cool as it has warmed up quickly all of a sudden.
Hi, Celia! Have a great day!
Farmers are always watching the skies, aren’t they? Yup, yup.
Farmers are always watching the skies. Yup, yup
Sunny here in Chicago. And hopes of sun for tomorrow. Sunday, though, not so much.
Happy 4th, we had soft rain all day long, now at 19.30 it is beginning to dry up. I love the idea of all the animals in together like Liquorice Allsorts. Do you have those sweets/candies over there?
The hay man knows his stuff. Had to chuckle and the clipped conversation, both of you have so much on your minds. Hope the rain holds off.
I hate phones.
I didn’t enter your tomato contest because – despite my planting them before you did – I don’t have even a bloom yet.
Just the right amount of words 😉
I think that photo of the hay field would smell nice if I could scratch and sniff it – essence of summer 🙂 Love seeing the ‘kids’ in the field together. And it’s always hard to keep them quiet when you’re on the phone.
Funny, my farmer talks a lot, all the news in one hay delivery! I always figured he stored up all this conversation while he was riding around in his combine or on his tractor all by himself.
My mini donk, Winston, likes to give Percy a chase so he squeals. Winnie gets scolded for that and then sassy Percy comes back for more.
Do hope you have had a happy 4th and so hope there is no rain cloud in sight! Poppy and Tima have quite a game going . . . 🙂 !
