Did I Forget something?

Above and below  is Minouchki being beautiful. Yesterday, the kittens worked in the garden alongside Tima, Grace,Marmalade, Berrit and the dogs. They were very helpful. chickens-064 They had a lovely day!chickens-042

Though I was troubled. All day as I indulged in a day of weeding and gardening, I could not help cycling through the animals on the farm, in my head, trying to work out what I had forgotton.chickens-049 It is because I am no longer milking and all the meat chickens are gone.  I had an extra four hours yesterday. And it felt very strange.  Even though Daisy bellowed healthily almost the whole day, Poppy escaped and came to visit me in the  shed, Tima was discovered eating cat food and when I shouted for her to stop she grabbed a mouthful of the kibbles and carrying them in her mouth ran at full-fat speed out onto the verandah, where she dumped the cat food out of her mouth and proceeded to eat them one by one.  Sneaky.  Yet I still fretted. I had too much time!chickens-038

Then I sat down to dinner and between mouthfuls John looked out the window and said; Is Sheila meant to be out? My enormous pig sauntered past, like a short elephant, blocking out the sun. No, I said.

Later Tima was once again seen being bad,  stealing tomatoes in John’s garden, and darting right into the bushes with the tomato in her mouth, her head high to keep it from draging on the ground,  trying to hide when someone walked past,  so she spent the last of the day in her own little field out of harms way. She is a very clever little pig.  I miss the cream and the butter and the ice cream and most of all the yoghurt and cheese. But it is good to have those extra hours to play in the gardens.

How familiar does this look?chickens-023

Boo and The Professor.

Four big red hens (that were too small to go with the first batch of broilers and have been living with the second batch),  did not fit in the meat chicken baskets yesterday morning, because I had so many roosters,  so I have kept them and moved them to the layers pen.  They are lovely quiet hens, and I am assured that they will lay speckly brown eggs, so I will see what happens next. I hope you all have a lovely day.

Your friend on the farmy,

miss c

  1. Ah Berit … he does exist 🙂 I have often read a post and thought the ‘slow life’ is anything but, now it seems you do have a little time to relax into until you busily fill it with something else. Tima definitely seems to be on a seefood and eat it diet! Boo is his usual sweatness with the Professor and TonTon in his usual close supervisory pattern. Good morning miss c. Laura

  2. Tima is definitely on the “seefood” diet – little stinker! How is “Minouchki” pronounced? Love to see Nanny Boo in action again!

  3. Good grief Miss C, I’ve never known anyone with less idea of what to do with a spare hour or two. Sit a while. Read a book. Sit on the porch and let the beauty of the day flood into your eyes and calm your soul. Be, not do. Just for a bit….

  4. So often I don’t get a chance (or take the time) to read through all of the blogs on my roll, but this one…..delivered to my inbox each morning…is one I always take the time to read. I love your short, thoughtful, poetic posts dotted with photos, and yes, those red hens are so lovely!! have a great day. Marie

  5. Molly was discovered eating my cherry tomatoes right off the vine yesterday. She carefully tugs them between her front teeth, and then with her tail in happy wags, she eats them. One by one, four then five. “Molly, stop that!”

  6. Hi C–So glad you kept those red hens from that first batch of chickens. They were timid around all the boisterous bigger chickens and although I made “secret” stashes of food for them, the others would bulldoze their way in and eat it before they could. Those girls were sweet and would sit together in a corner of the ark. If they were human, they would have been knitting mittens or something! Hope they turn out to be good layers! Miss you!

  7. will the red hens get names now as they are not going anywhere in a hurry..then they can stayif they have names

  8. Celi, a return reminds me how much I miss your family during the hectic days of working life. I love that your day was quieter despite all the spanners the animals seemed to throw in….it is always refreshing to come here. Hope you feel refreshed at some point in the near future too.

  9. You read my mind. I was just wondering if you get any free time, what you do with it and how it feels. Your days are so very full. The kittens are precious and wearing their new names beautifully. Boo is being the nanny he is. The caramel colored chicken looks majestic. All is well with the world.
