… the calves out in their fields last night. Everything seemed calm over there at the big barn across the way. Local dogs being good. Local dogs owners making sure of it.
Then as I brought them in last night I saw the fresh HEAD of a small animal laying in the grass. It was pale. And only the head was left. And a little of the spine. Newly bloody by the way. Now, it may have been a possum. But what worried me was what hunted it and ate it in the calves field. That is the fellow that bothers me.
However, we will see.
So back onto the concrete pad they went while I have a think. I have to say the head of a small animal lying in the field with my calves left me a little rattled.
The corn is turning.
And rained again, so the dogs still get their swims.

Better to be safe than sorry. It looks like they are having fun in the daytime anyway 😉
The calves look like they are enjoying a race. Ton and Boo are enjoying cooling off too. I would be concerned about whatever ate it’s prey in your field also. Better safe on the concrete pad.
I had a panic about Godot for a minute. It wouldn’t be a feral cat (the hunter) perhaps? Laura
that would be a nice result, there was talk of bob cats too they are wuite small.. and no threat.. the fact that the head was left could be a cat.. c

One of our big beef farmers keeps donkeys with his cows to protect them from predators. Keeps coyotes and there at bay. Have you heard of this? Chris

Ugh. That would have taken me aback if I had found it there with your sweet calves. Good move to bring them back to safety.

I never really thought of how different the cattle look from one another–beef cattle vs milk cows.
I would imagine that your dead critter was killed/eaten by a small predator unable to cause your calves any harm. Still, unsettling.

That IS the most unsettling of sights. I hope you find the culprit soon.
We came upon the head of a fawn early this summer. Just the head and a small limb. No blood. We thought it was coyote here. Wished I hadn’t seen it, but, it is what it is.
I would be a little concerned about that discovery also.

we all live in hope but no, I thought it looked like a badgers head but john thought maybe a possum or skunk. Badgers are mean evidently.. c
If it was a badger, it would be concerning as they are formidable animals. Skunks and minks and raccoons are no match for a badger.
That is what john said, I have never even seen one.. c
The expression to “Badger” someone comes from the fact that a badger keeps after something and never gives up.

when we drive up the drive and are nearly home, boo not only haas his head out the window but he lifts his whole body and JUMPS OUT, I am going slowly by then, but I have to remember to have the windows up for the last leg.. c
The calves are splendid !!! Frolicking together…I would be upset by a lone bloody head….it’s just unsettling !
