the face of halloween

“So what happpened on the farm today? ” Our John said, as he tracked his muddy boots across my newly scrubbed kitchen floor.

“Oh, nothing much –  I planted 300 garlic bulbs, the cooking oil car got a flat tire when I was out at the old farm so I abandoned it but I got a good shot of Poppy eating the face off Halloween.”  He laughed and  picked up a spoon to dip into the pot for a taste.

“The kittens are opening their eyes.” I said .

“Really?” Our John answered , dropping  the spoon and heading to the wardrobe to have a look.

“But what about the Halloween sequence” I said.

Sorry Mr Halloween. But the Piggie wins. And the pumpkin gets it.

This season is a favourite for the cows and the pigs. They love pumpkins.  I look at all the pumpkins on people’s front  steps through town and all I can think of is “FEED for Farmy animals or PUMPKIN soup!” Putting food on your steps to rot is beyond my conprehension frankly.   I would say that only happens in the first world. And I want them after you are done. All my animals will eat pumpkins. Me too!

We have a weather forcast ahead of us that defys logic. In the next week we are diving below freezing as a HIGH.  The lows I do not even want to talk about.   But I am running with it. We link arms with adversity. We say hullo there killing weather  – how can I help you. Excellent. I am off to the store tomorrow to buy a new clown suit and some really thick socks.. some one stole my last lot!.

Have you ever used these?  heating thingies for chickens. I have ordered one for the chicks in the loft as research.Thy are like a little warm table that the chicks sit under.  It is radiant heat so will not set anything on fire.   I may need more if this winter is as bad as it is threatening to be. My son  in NZ discovered them – It seems that this may be an alternative to the terrifying heated hot light  bulb which has caused many barn fires. Have any of you used these for your birds?  What do you think? Can I adapt them for  little piglets?

I hope you all have a lovely day.

Your friend on the farmy,

celi

  1. The last photo in the Halloween sequence is an absolute gem! Thanks for making me smile on this chilly, frosty morning (when I should really be working, rather than procrastinating on WordPress!). 🙂

  2. Please can we have a selfie of you in the new clown suit? I went walking this morning, and for the first time this year, there was a distinct chill in the air. We’re due bendy tree winds tonight, the meteo said, and I confirmed it by taking pictures of the mackerel sky (high cirrus)

  3. i think that I am lucky to live where I do. Bulgaria is cold in winter and hot in Summer thats all there is to it. Everyone knows it will be cold so wood is stored and the food cupboards bulge with various bottling , boxes and packets….
your sounds as though it may get a wee bit chilly!
love the pictures of the farm animals and yes , I agree a, a picture of Miss C in her glory suit….l.ots of love

  4. Just look at all your beautiful red chillies! Too early in the season here, but I have just discovered a tasty sounding recipe for hot pepper jelly which I shall try when the prices of capsicums and chillies gets a bit more sensible. I won’t be growing enough for myself yet, not this year anyway… Off to bed soon to get some shuteye before my early start at the nuclear medicine department in the morning. I’m taking your advice, Miss C. Sleeeeeep…. sleeeep!

      • Thank you so much. I’ve had the bone scan, still waiting for the MRI. Waiting is hard, but I’ve decided that I’m done living in fear. I beat cancer the first time, and if it’s back, I can do it again.

        • Good. From now on we take positive steps in health. We will just factor in the cancer as we go. If that is the prognosis of course. But you sound like you have decided not to let it take over your life. Good. Don’t. c

  5. Celi – have you heard of Heat Holder Socks? A co-worker swears by them and I am looking for some before it gets much colder. High today of 44 in SE MN. I had to take my winter coat out of the closet before work this morning. Wish I were there to see the kittens in person!

  6. The kittens are sleeping on the most gorgeous fabric – a scarf? Wow. The little heater can be attached to the side of a crate, so I’m guessing it could be attached to a barn wall as well for piglet warmth.

  7. Great pictures and so glad the little biggies are getting along so well. Loved the kittie faces with eyes almost open!
And I passed on the chicken warmer site to all my chicken raising friends.

  8. Oh, those little eyes, a sight to see. I was just thinking yesterday that they would be opening soon. Two weeks old or so I think is the time their little ears and eyes open. They will soon be scampering and tottering all over the place, much to Boo’s delight when he meets them. Attack, Poppy, attack! That’s what that sequence said to me and I laughed out loud. Thank you for that. Gear up, winter is coming, alas.

  9. Th kittens look like Tribbles from one of the original Star Trek episodes. I like the idea of the piggy warmer, but I think those chick warmers are too small. You might be able to build a pig version and I bet they’ll all want electric blankets for Christmas 😉

  10. That box of kitties looks like a bowl of Peaches and Cream 🙂 Halloween not big here, but I did manage to snag a couple of pumpkins for the Worms – they love them too. Oh oh I was hoping your frigid cold was going to hold off awhile longer. Keep warm. Laura

  11. I think it’s grand that you have so much animal power to help put the winter lock down on the farmy. I envision roaming herds (that word is a bit much I suppose) of pigs and sheep and cows munching and devouring, then standing back taking stock of the area, perhaps turning to each other in consultation regarding their work, then moving on to clear and groom another spot…stay warm, or at least think of the hot summer sun as you are out and about 🙂

  12. Love the kitten photos! I am allergic, but I love looking at them. The tip about that new brooder heater is a good one. I have also passed it on!

  13. Love the photos . IF I have pumpkin, and IF the squirrels don’t rearrange the Jack-o-Lantern face, it ends up in the compost pile feeding either the pile, or the deer and woodchuck who like to scrounge in the pile. 🙂
