“So what happpened on the farm today? ” Our John said, as he tracked his muddy boots across my newly scrubbed kitchen floor.
“Oh, nothing much – I planted 300 garlic bulbs, the cooking oil car got a flat tire when I was out at the old farm so I abandoned it but I got a good shot of Poppy eating the face off Halloween.” He laughed and picked up a spoon to dip into the pot for a taste.
“The kittens are opening their eyes.” I said .
“Really?” Our John answered , dropping the spoon and heading to the wardrobe to have a look.
“But what about the Halloween sequence” I said.
Sorry Mr Halloween. But the Piggie wins. And the pumpkin gets it.
This season is a favourite for the cows and the pigs. They love pumpkins. I look at all the pumpkins on people’s front steps through town and all I can think of is “FEED for Farmy animals or PUMPKIN soup!” Putting food on your steps to rot is beyond my conprehension frankly. I would say that only happens in the first world. And I want them after you are done. All my animals will eat pumpkins. Me too!
We have a weather forcast ahead of us that defys logic. In the next week we are diving below freezing as a HIGH. The lows I do not even want to talk about. But I am running with it. We link arms with adversity. We say hullo there killing weather – how can I help you. Excellent. I am off to the store tomorrow to buy a new clown suit and some really thick socks.. some one stole my last lot!.
Have you ever used these? heating thingies for chickens. I have ordered one for the chicks in the loft as research.Thy are like a little warm table that the chicks sit under. It is radiant heat so will not set anything on fire. I may need more if this winter is as bad as it is threatening to be. My son in NZ discovered them – It seems that this may be an alternative to the terrifying heated hot light bulb which has caused many barn fires. Have any of you used these for your birds? What do you think? Can I adapt them for little piglets?

I have lusted for a Brinsea brood heated. Let us know how it works. Love the kitties wee eyes and the pumpkin sequence is great. Chooks like pumpkin too.
I buy pumpkins for fall decoration but with an ulterior motive in mind. I roast mine..scrape out the meat .. puree them and freeze it by the cup full. I give our cat a teaspoon a couple times a day. According to research the oil in pumpkin is good for fur balls. It won’t totally get rid of them but sure does help most of it slide on thorugh! The upside is she loves it and it is good for her!! The kttens are adorable..
Rinse and dry out the pumpkin seeds, drizzle some olive oil and sprinkle some sea salt, bake in toaster oven until brown (250 degrees) delicious!

C. those photos of the kittens in their beautiful blankie is just too cute, adorable, etc. etc. I LOVE those lil ear buds they have! And Poppy and her Pumpkin?? Ha!! Put up a sign in the local grocery store or pub asking folks to drop off their gently used jack o lanterns for a very good cause…to feed underserved farm animals and I bet you will have a truck load! 🙂 I collect some from my neighbors for my goats!
PS. Does John get a scolding when he re polishes your floors with mud?? 🙂

When I see a pumpkin I think soup rather than Halloween… oh and cow food as that’s my Dad’s opinion of it! Poppy has it right, attack from the back or feet and eat the head/face last – childhood years of eating red frogs, snakes, Tiny Teddies, etc !
These little kittens will have to get toughened up quickly with Old Man Winter hurtling from the Northwest! Like you, I am scurrying around these last nice days to batten down the hatches in preparation for the cold temperatures. Daisy and her dwindling herd (Dancer has been missing for a week) are the only ones who seem to welcome the cold temperatures. I’m going to have to research all of these suggestions for warm wear! My feet are always cold. I wear socks to bed all year long… if you can believe that!

Australia seems to love its pumpkins a lot more then the US 🙂 ! So many recipes for them both Anglo-Saxon and Asian of course. Am not a ‘roast person’ especially since I mostly live alone, but cannot imagine an Australian roast recipe without pumpkin pieces [with rosemary, bay, garlic etc snuggling in!] next to the potatoes sliding into the oven!! Poppy knows better tan to waste also it seems . . .

Great shots of Poppy, Celi. Looks like Marmalade has stepped up to the plate. Her kittens do look well cared for. We’ve not had the cold, yet, like you’ve had or are anticipating. The Lake shields us a bit this time of year but it will keep us cool next Spring. Worst news of all: the farmers market closes tomorrow. I don’t need anything but will go just to walk around for one last time in 2014. Sunrise, sunset …
