Shocks

The electricity problem is back.. not car batteries  this time but electric lights.  dec-028

Over the last 24 hours I have blown two lights in the barn, (the moment I switch the lights on – BAM they blow with a loud Tick), Sheila’s bedroom light, the outdoor lights on the verandah (both of them) my bedroom light (who needs a light in there anyway) and the washing machine pump spat the dummy (all over the floor  – which is fine I hate that basement floor anyway.)

I keep telling John if concrete was not so expensive I would back one of those big bumble bee trucks up to the steps and push a hose down into the basement and fill the nasty thing up with cement.  But that has nothing to do with my electric shock treatments.

Do you remember when the three phase gave me a zap in the chook house and threw me onto the ground. Do you think it has been worse since then? I do see in the dark very well, luckily as the torches won’t work for me either.  That is if I can find one.

Anyway there you are, we are now in the dark with smelly clothes.  Even though my arms are tingly – I have been handwashing the clothes. Washing clothes by hand is nice  really. That gentle motion of lifting and pushing down into the warm sudsy water wringing them out then squeezing the excess out with a towel, lying them on racks to dry.   When I hang them up to dry above the fire all my clothes end up smelling like garlic. We eat garlic with every meal. Every day. No-one complains.

In six weeks I am off again to New Zealand for Senior son’s wedding. Did I tell you? I am quite the traveller this winter. My families are very generous. Lucky the farm does not have to pay for it, the animals and I could never make that kind of money. Though Sheila is officially assured of fresh fruit and veges at every meal for the next year. Thank you all very much. dec-036

Good morning. Sometimes I think that houses are like organisms, if one thing goes wrong other things fall in after it. We need to keep a balance.  In many things.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Your balancing friend on the farmy

  1. or maybe the bulbs had just reached the end of their lifespan? I can do without lights but would miss the washing machine. That pile of Kitties get cuter everyday. No more shocking experiences and wear rubber boots always 🙂 Laura

  2. Oh, c! I certainly can sympathize with the problems. I hope that the remedy is found soon. I’m sitting in the dark while writing this because we are in a power outage. No heat, no lights, no fireplace.

  3. Hope the electrical problem is soon sorted out. Love the teakettle (and rocks) on top of the post and the sunrise beyond. Those kittens are getting so big! I have clothes drying on racks also as the dryer in the laundry room wasn’t cooperating either. Today they will be put away and the racks folded up. Heading into a warm up (above 20F).

  4. I think you must have Too Much Energy, Miss C. The power is running through you, and fizzling out of your fingertips. While we all wonder how you do it, you spark and crackle through your day, and some days, it’s just too much for the circuits. I’ve been looking at the distant night sky, which is lit by occasional flashes of dry lightning over the Eton Range, and wishing all that energy would prompt a bit of rain. Just a bit. A day or so of rain would be a very good start. A month is what we need….

  5. Ooh, poor Celie. As if you didn’t already have enough heavy work to do. I love your positive attitude, but it might be sensible to get a qualified electrician to give the whole system the once over. You don’t want to be without power in winter, or for old wiring to set fire to the house/barn.

    Take care,
    love,
    ViVx

  6. Where is your headlamp? You hung it by the veranda door on the right side. Is it still there? Looks kind of goofy, but gets the job done. I love mine. I feel like a miner when I wear it. Please don’t get shocked anymore. That would not be good at all. Kittens with curling tails and curious faces…precious. Take good care always.

    • It is returned to its hook by the door after each use, it is MOST useful when collecting armloads of firewood in the dead of night! no worries there!.. c

      • oh good! i had to look up “spat the dummy”…tantrum which involves spitting out the pacifier (dummy) i like that phrase.

  7. sounds like ground wire[s] is loose in one side of breakerbox

or the electric fairy heard about sheila’s fund and wants a share

i have learned to never mention i have a few extra bucks around appliances, one of them will bite dust and take my spare cash everytime

    • or
insulation worn on wires, allowing 2 hot wires to touch, sending 220 volts to those circits.
that can be checked with simple ,cheap tester from hardware store, that plugs into outlet
      or
flip off all 220 breakers in panel, and see if bulbs blow, then turn on 1.. 220 breaker at a time. to possibly isolate problem

hope it not fry the rest of your appliances before problem is found

  8. I’m also inclined to think there’s something wrong with the wiring and the earth (ground) in particular.
From the colour of the kittens, were you able to hazard a guess at who the father was? I know that a litter can have multiple fathers, but as there are only two colours…. 🙂

  9. And the power of 3 definitely works in our home. Water Well, A/C, Hot Water Heater…. Bam, Bam, Bam. Car Died/Purchased new used Beetle, Air Bag went out, A/C went out (while on vacation mind you…… we drove from Fort Worth to Pensacola) ugh…

  10. Good afternoon, Celi. I am writing to you from outside Paris. We are on a river cruise with friends who were telling us about their trip to Australia and New Zealand . They loved Christ Church especially. They said they think the flight from Los Angeles to Sydney was something like 16 hours. Can that be right?

    • Yeah, maybe, Sydney comes AFTER Auckland and LA to Ack is eleven hours. To get there you fly over New Zealand. So 16 is probably not far off the mark. Sounds miserable.. c

  11. Maybe something or some ONE chewed a wire… Ron’s suggestions were good. These types of situations and setbacks surely keep us on our toes! I see where my t-shirt shipped today! YAY!! Sheila will get a little exposure in SW Oklahoma!!
