Now I have four volunteers and the farm is really humming. I have to be right on task though as they were at full throttle yesterday and working so fast, striking things off the list one after the other – I was having trouble keeping up. Today we are taking down some old fences and collecting all the materials together for the new fences that we start next week. And gardening, gardening, gardening.
A heat wave is on its way so we must ensure all the pigs have good cool wallows and lots of straw in their houses and the cows are under the trees.
We will get all the hardest work done early in the day. But the War on Thistles is continuing and this is always done in the hottest part of the day so we can use beating sun as a weapon. We have two kinds of thistle in the fields: the ordinary big dark green one with the tap root that you can dig right out and it is gone for good and the nasty long thin one that spreads from its roots shooting out in all directions. I fear that we will never get rid of the nasty long thin one – the most we can do is stop the seeds from spreading, and dig them out again and again until they give up. The actual thistles are hauled out of the field in a big washing basket and burnt. I put pigs in a field with the bad thistles one year and they dug them right up and that kept them down for a while but they always come back. So I must content myself with managing them as opposed to eradicating them.
Tonight my old friend and ex-woofer Amanda is back for a few days so we will be filled to the brim. My house is a little house but we have different corners we stash people into. And once we all get around the table it is marvelous.
I am Kitchen Mama today and as usual I have No Idea what I will be cooking. I will make ice cream though and ricotta cheese and bread in the morning. But what to make for dinner? I don’t know – I am sure something will come to me. We always gather and sit together for dinner and if one person is late to the table we wait for him or her. Gathering as a complete team is very important for me. Eating as a family with my Rent-a-Kids. Priceless.
I hope you have a lovely day.

My mother always insisted that everyone ate meals together at the table, and I did the same with my kids. It’s one of the few occasions that can truly draw people together. I hope you find a moment to cool off in the summer heat. And very good morning to the farmy.
Group family meals are very important.
We always eat together too. If all else fails, how about a big bowl of pasta with some of those lovely zucchini and the ricotta?
What a joyful gathering!
Home made Italian-style pizzas, as you’re making bread anyway? A nice smear of tomato sauce, a sprinkle of fresh herbs, some thinly sliced fresh vegies, maybe a few mushrooms if you have any (soaked dried ones always add a good strong flavour), a little chopped bacon, and a few dabs of ricotta. Salad on the side
Exactly what I was thinking – Pizza! Or a nice chilled vegetable soup and some sort of flat bread….. But maybe that would be best for the heat wave next week. I would love to sit at the table with all the Rent-a-kids! Or even try my hand at Kitchen Momma once for the crowd.
Oooh, good one: how about a lovely hot spiced cheese paratha and some ricotta-and-something-curried dip?
Tomorrow is pizza night. It is Friday tomorrow here! We love them.. c
Hard work, but fun too, with laughter, much learning and bonding! So wonderful!!! And the gardens are coming on strong!!! 🙂
Dinner could be riotous 🙂 Laura
A nice pasta dish is always good after a hard days work. Ice cream sounds good!
Time spent around a table filled with good food and brimming over with lovely people is priceless! I know you will have a delicious day! Go get those prickly thistles!
For me, thinking and deciding what to cook was and is always harder than doing the actual cooking. I’ve always liked a huge breakfast, medium lunch and a very light dinner. Something that doesn’t lay in my stomach for hours after going to bed. Quesadillas with just a little meat and lots of flavor is usually a safe bet. Something on that order. Some nights it’s just veggies and hummus but I don’t work as hard as you do. Good luck with those weeds.
I could murder a pizza, but Jock won’t have them. I like the look of your courgettes. They take up too much room to grow here. We used to call them triffids in the old garden.
Enjoy your company supper.

Cute
Chilli and fresh homemade bread! Then the cool ice cream. Yummy!
We can almost hear the laughs and the conversation going around your big happy table after a tiring but good day’s worth of working 🙂
How about quiche (since you have such good eggs) with a good big salad and your (lovely for sure) bread ?

Stuff the beautiful courgette flowers with ricotta and deep fry them!
You can eat thistles – the milk thistle is supposed to taste quite good, though i don’t know about other varieties 🙂
How bout just ice cream for dinner? 🙂 How lovely to have all those gorgeous kids gathered around your table! Priceless indeed!
