I fly out to LA today. Usually I leave the midwest 24 hours ahead of my international flight (that leaves from LAX) – I missed a flight to New Zealand once due to a weather hold up in Chicago – never again – now I leave here the day before and wait over on the West Coast.  It is over four hours to Los Angeles from Chicago.  And I am always a little relieved when I get closer to LAX.

Do you remember that I was held up for five hours in Midway just the other day because there was lightning?  See? Imagine if I had a connection.  It is so easy to miss an important flight.   I do everything I can to make my international connection on time. Though, of course,  nothing is ever sure.

So, off I go to LA, where I will stay in an hotel by the sea so I can decompress and have a good walk along the boardwalk before taking a cab back to the airport and board my next flight tomorrow night. It is amazing what kinds of deals you can get if you book ahead and off-peak.  This time I am staying in Manhattan Beach. Nice.

I will be in tomorrow as I will be blogging as often as I can as I travel- I want to show you some more of my beloved New Zealand. Our farm blog now morphs into a travel blog. I LOVE to travel.

  7. What a smart way to do the trip! With an overnight and time to ease into travel, and enjoy a hotel and the ocean. That certainly makes sense! Can’t wait to see New Zealand again and hear of your adventures along the way! xo

  11. I know of what you speak! We missed a connection because of closings in Minneapolis. We finally got to Chicago but snow storms grounded everything, so we and plenty of others stayed the night in Terminal 5. Next day, rumpled and ready I was first in line to see if we couldn’t upgrade-it’s a long flight to Ireland, and I wanted us to rest. We then had to train to Cork, so well deserved. We then always traveled to Chicago, spent the night and got aboard. NOW, we live close to O’Hare and use it a lot. Safe travels and looking forward to your “new” travel blog.

  12. Be happy and enjoy your trip. We learn a lot about how to travel from these botched experiences. I got stranded at St. Louis in a blizzard, and the airport had run out of food and snacks. I had to take rest on the floor as no seats were available. Fortunately, I had my long, wool coat and a package of granola in my backpack, along with a bottle of water. My backpack became my pillow that night. The next morning I managed one of the first flights out – only because several people had misplaced their tickets in the chaos of the day before, and the plane was leaving pronto! It helps to be a bit prepared, and keep your head.
