Wild Quacker has Flown Away

Sad right. But it is the way of things. Especially wild things.

The last time I saw her was on Friday when she was flying round and around above the house and the barn – at height – doing big loops – squawking loudly. Mad thought she was probably calling for a mate and I think he was right.

Poor Quacker is left in the company of a convention of dumb chickens and a haughty peacock. And not terribly impressed. We will need to find her a friend of her own ilk.

Chickens in old barn

I have a month before I go to Canada. So I will see what I can do.

Look at all these eggs. These were all laid since I went away so they were all good. Him Indoors is banned from climbing loft ladders. I boiled them up for the pigs. The eggs.

Black Cat was spotted a few days ago – he is seldom seen anyway so I don’t worry about him.

But TomKat hangs out on the workbench with the two orange cats.

They all get along very well. Like old friends now.

Good morning. Another sunny day! Delightful. The sky is absolutely clear and after a weekend of very cold temperatures it is going above freezing.

Thank goodness. I was poorly over the weekend and am looking forward to getting back outside for longer periods of time.

Though I still have to steer clear of the pigs. Pigs can catch colds from humans.

I took a video for TKG Take Ten yesterday evening – as the sun went down – and a great quiet descended upon the barn. It will be published at 5pm central as usual. It is VERY calming. 🤭 You might just go to sleep too!

You might be able to hear FreeBee snoring. He has had a hard winter and is not eating as well as he should. He has never been a fast eater but I think he is even slower now. I have laid out tons of straw in a sunny spot in the field – I hope he finds it today.

Hogs will chew on wood for nutrients or out of boredom. FreeBee has such a varied diet I am sure it is not a mineral deficiency – maybe he needs a ball to play with. I often throw cardboard boxes and sticks in with the big pigs to alleviate boredom when they are stuck inside due to the weather.

I will do more of that today.

The Free Trial for TKG Take Ten is almost over. Join The Tenners with a small upgrade of $5 a month. TKG Take Ten is the evening edition of the morning blog. Please share. Please consider upgrading.

The Tenners! Get it!! I am so grateful.

Our weekly newsletter Sustainable Sunday remains FREE. Of course!

You can unsubscribe anytime. And the funds go to supporting my writing and the farm. Even when I am traveling the TKG earnings go straight to the feed store (they have a specialty vegetarian feed) and when necessary (for FreeBee and Wai) to the vet. I am not selling meat anymore so I hope this works!

Here is my Sustainable Sunday newsletter written from my sick bed. It is a truncated version due to me being under the weather. I managed to stay resting indoors for a whole morning! 😂

And the our daily blog – right here, which has been free since 2011, will always be FREE! That won’t change.

See you this evening at TKG TAKE TEN. Have a lovely day! I will!

I hear no Wild Quacker this morning either – I miss her!

  1. Glad you have recovered sufficiently to be up and about with all the farmy critters! BUT, take it slowly! TomKat has settled in so well, he looks so at home. We will all miss Wild Quacker, especially Quackers Mr Flowers will be happy to have his friend back I’m sure!

  2. Have you checked FreeBee’s teeth? It’s possible that his slow eating is due to a bad tooth or other mouth problem.

  3. I’m on the lookout for a few more ducks too, as I’m down one girl and one boy; I’m worried that Girl Duck will die (like all her flockmates, of old age) and Boy Duck will be on his own. I also have dumb chickens, but Boy Duck can’t live with them–he might try to mate and hurt them (though if he died, Girl Duck would be fine with them).

  4. Pigs can catch colds from humans? Does it go the opposite way too. Sorry about Wild Quacker but happy if she found a mate. Although mates aren’t always what they’re quacked up to be. (I couldn’t resist!) Those are beautiful photos!
