The Farm – The Travel and Superpowers

The farmy is still cloaked in its sleepy late winter weeds.

As an entity it will toddle along like this – in a kind of slow moving hibernation until I get back from my ‘Spring into Autumn Progress ‘24’. (This years trip name), late May Then when I get back I will bring in piglets, chicks and more calves. The gardens will go in late. But I have a plan for that too. Then we plant all the carbon copay trees.

For a while I am encouraging calm. Inertia. No acceleration. Wherever anyone is now, will be where they are for the next two months. Fingers crossed.

All systems are secured except that TomCat prefers to eat from the cat food canister!

I will not collect all these stolen hens until I am back on the farm.

Each system has been installed and trialed and on Saturday I will have my last in-person meeting with my whole team before going to Canada in 10 days then after a short ‘touch and go’ in Illinois, off to Australasia.

I do this every year. (Except those nasty pandemic years) I have a system. It works. As usual my travel is paid for by my New Zealand family (they fly Mama in) with funds we invested years ago for this very thing, so I feel confident.

Flights are not that expensive if you book the sales.

Today is another hospital day to get my elder up to date and then another to get Him Indoors up to date then I will hand over to designated caretakers and hand the farm and both houses over to their designated caretakers then fly away.

It is way more complicated this time – this leave-taking. There are many moving parts. But my super power is in organization by empowering. (The biggest power I give my people is the power to ask as many questions as they like and every question is welcomed without ridicule). (And transparency- frequent communication so we all stay on the same page). Each of my people – even Him Indoors on his walking stick feels almost ready. (My other super power is in organization based on anticipation – it is like chess; write a plan then anticipate all the corners and curves and moves that will change your plan – no man is an island remember and just because I do not agree with you does not mean you may not be right – so I must say ‘thank you’ to each problem, accept the possibility of change and plan for that too.) – Did that make sense?

So what is your super power? Today’s super power.

There will be problems. Emergencies. But everyone has joined WhatsApp with me (another fav app) and if the internet holds I am always available!

Plus I will be here every morning with your daily blog post and on TKG Take Ten every afternoon.

I am so looking forward to my travel. Bringing all my presents in their hand made wrapping paper. To get out of this toxic political environment for a while.

Good morning!

Yesterday we mowed fire breaks and today John and his son go out to burn the wild grasses. This must be done every five years and must be done before the ground nesting birds begin to get busy. Plus it must be very well controlled.

And Our John will be on the tractor which is his favorite wheelchair.

I hope to be back in time to take photos but we will see.

Now I must away!

  1. Gosh, it sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned, and that you have all bases covered on the Farmy!!! So exciting!!! Can’t wait to travel internationally with you again!!!

  2. I have been away for too long. Not sure who the Indoor Man is. Your organization super power has been growing for years. I love it.

My superpower – I think is calm. I can stay very calm most of the time. Slow to anger, slow to joy, slow to much. Just calm. My co-workers tell me this too.

  3. Happy that you are travelling again to your favourite people and places… similar but in a broader scale to what we’re doing at the moment. My superpowers are lists and reminder notes, and a recently cultivated ability to make the preparations, go and deal with whatever eventuates as it happens or when we get back.

  4. Have a wonderful trip. My superpower is my intuitive powers….which sadly I don’t always listen to.:). Just watched the film ON NETFLIX….’The Little `Big Farm’. and thought of you… If you haven’t watched it already, I highly recommend.

  5. Have a wonderful trip, I will look forward to reading about it and traveling with you. I am glad you will be able to be renewed by visits with your tribe. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to be surrounded by people you adore but don’t share views with…how isolating. I am sorry and want to give them all a shake.

    • Or a good Push. But one thing I believe totally is that a person has the right govern their own body and a right to their make up their own mind. So I have to allow that there will be views they share, that are not mine. And accept their right to have them. This is in fact why I love TKG Take Ten. It is far above all that. This is not to say that I do not but heads often!!

    • Hello there Karen! Yes – though it is tough to leave all these creatures and their delicate environments and wants in others hands. I cannot function if I do not trust that what will be will be.

  6. My superpower is hopefulness. Even if the day turns to crap, there’s always hope for tomorrow. I always hope for the best from people, and quite often I am not disappointed. Fly safely, like a bird, easily and sweetly, and arrive in hope.
