There is a whole history of people writing travel logs that stretches back through hundreds of years. Lots of our favorite writers wrote entire novels at little tables by the sea in far away places.
‘There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately no-one knows what they are.’ Somerset Maugham.
Right?
But air travel is not quite as conducive to writing. I always take my notebook and pens and think I am going to begin this wonderful treatise but instead I just read.
My plane was held up at the first leg. For hours. In fact we had to decamp and abandon that plane and wait for a rescue plane. Yup – they called it a rescue plane. But the hold up collapsed plans, me and many others missed connections all across the country. So I turned my brain off and I read for hours. I am rereading Phillipa Gregory at the moment. Some of her lesser known books are marvelous. And there are no happy endings which I find refreshing.

After one and a half books and lots of conversations with delightful strangers later I arrived in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities in the world. And one of my favorite airports. So well designed. The more I see of San Francisco the more I love it. I was a bit rugged and weary once I arrived but a glass of peach wine fixed that! My friend and I went out to a roof top bar just across from her apartment in the city center. It was a Sunday night, a perfectly still spring fresh evening and the restaurant was jammed with people.
I took a really great TKG Ten video from up there I will publish it HERE at 5pm central time.
I am always amazed at how fast videos load when I have decent WiFi! One of the joys of travel. Because the internet at the farm is complete rubbish.

I have some hours before I take off tonight so I will walk the city and drink a ton of water – water loading because I always end up dehydrated when I travel. Then I will pack everything back into the designated positions in my little suitcase, shoulder the painting that I am lugging all the way over to my daughter in Melbourne and off I go again.

I found this little store on my early morning walk to find coffee so I will go back to grab some fruit for lunch.
But just getting out of this apartment building is a marathon. I have got lost twice already!
Have a great day!

I’m gald you were able to make lemonade, when the airline gave you lemons!
¡Buen viaje!
It is a very small airport. So we had to wait ages for a technician to drive over then ages for them to say not fixable today then ages for the rescue plane to arrive. But we got there in the end!!
It sounds like lots of patience was required of the passengers 😉
The shops look great! How nice to see fresh produce without it being wrapped in plastic. That’s an issue we have in the UK, and I suspect in the US too. A lot of supermarket fruit and veg is packaged. Wish I could find a way to avoid it!
Glad you made it to San Fran safely, despite the hold up. I’ve never had peach wine but it sounds very restorative after a long day!
it all looks rather delicious!!
Delays seem to be part of air travel these days. I do write on long hauls. I was writing one of my Amanda travels books on a flight from Amsterdam to Calgary and needed a name for a dog. The folks in the seats beside me and in front and back of me helped. Together we came up with a name that worked and it killed about an hour for all of us. I also like Phillipa Gregory’s books. Happy travels to Melbourne. xo
What a great story about writing a story! I find it so hard to focus – I seem to go too far deep into myself when I fly. I will try this next flight though – it is 15 hours after all!! I need to work part of it!
Hope you weren’t on the latest Boeing plane with bits flying off! I guess you have left the States by now so won’t catch the full eclipse? I do hope the travelling is improved and that you have a good flight to Melbourne. I would never cope with flying if it wasn’t for my trusty kindle. Enjoy yourself.
I leave this evening so I am enjoying the sun in San Francisco. A lovely day here today!
Lovely surprise to see this post! I did not expect anything so soon into the trip. SF is a lovely place to visit- it’s been 10 years or so since my daughter and I visited and we had a wonderful time playing tourist.
My last visit there was over 30 years ago with my DYS (Dashing Young Scotsman), but the wonder of the City has never left me.
My daughter and I had so much fun Judith and we tossed in a short trip over the Golden Gate bridge to stay in Sausalito for a few days as well. She and I have talked about going back at some point.
I am too old now for trips to the other side of the world (86). Too old and too far.
2 1/2 hours by plane to Denver CO is almost too much for me to visit both daughters. I always wanted to travel to Europe but I just don’t know if I could be in a plane that long.
A dear friend & I spent a college year in Paris on the Left Bank . I came back home to University & she dropped out & went to Sausalito & urged me for some several yrs. after to come on out – this was back in the early ’60s…what a time! But I married the college lover & never made it out there. A fork in the road & I took the other one…..Since we want to admit no regrets, I don’t often backtrack that way.
I’m in the same boat, Judith, so I tag along with Celi & also Nathaniel Hawthorne in Rome where I’ve been through his wonderful & mysterious gothic romance, The Marble Faun these past enchanted weeks. It’s a much more delightful way to visit faraway places now I’m in my Golden Years.
Sausalito was very quaint and artsy. Mentioning the 60’s…daughter and I planned that trip around a through back Summer of the 60’s festival (this was roughly 2014 however) and actually stayed just across the street from Golden Gate park in the Stanley Hotel- an historic Haight-Ashbury icon. And it’s still there 🙂
Oops…that was meant to be throwback not through. Brain and fingers must be disengaged 🙂
I love your choice of just embracing it and it’s clear, your adventure has already begun
I’m going to embrace your zen attitude of embracing whatever happens on my upcoming trip to England. Much better than fussing about that which you can do nothing about!
It sounds as if you have your recovery recipe sorted out! Peach wine, a rooftop bar with a view, and fresh fruit and water the next day. That fruit shop! I can smell the citrus from here!
That little store is gorgeous. I’m trying to get in a better mindset when things don’t go perfectly. You made good things happen.
Hope you enjoyed San Francisco, would like to go to San Francisco soon too
