The Long Awaited Day!!

The ducklings have found the pond.

They went in three times yesterday and are back this morning – I can hear them splashing about as I write.

They are sticking close to the sides. Not yet ready for deep water! And it is deep, the pond, the middle is almost 10 foot deep. The fish disappeared down into the depths when the ducks arrived.

The ducklings (they really are too big to be called ducklings anymore) spent a lot of time eating pond weed, the rocks are now clean in that corner.

Then, in giddy excitement at their daring, they climbed out and went for a waddle walk straight down into the corn field. Boo and I went in after them, turned them around and marched them back to the barn. Boo giving them cross looks as we went.

They followed me up the track and Boo was the caboose bring up the rear. I bet we looked funny!

For the full video of their first ever swim go HERE. You don’t have to subscribe to watch the TKG Video channel but I would love you to!

The calves continue to slowly recover. We are not zapping them with antibiotics because we need to build immunity from the pink eye. It will be a risk all summer. But it is a slow process.

The chicks.

We had a little rain yesterday and there is a shower right now actually so things are growing!

Though I left the mower out. Poo! It needs petrol. Of course! I will run out and park it in the garage before I start work.

Good morning. Above is the picture I took yesterday of the American flag for the Fourth of July image I posted on the Cullom Community Market Facebook page. It is new (the Facebook page) and I volunteered to manage the page for the little store down the road in an attempt to raise awareness of this local treasure. Corner stores have such a hard time surviving in the modern world.

Have a gorgeous day. Maybe a nap?

  1. It’s surprising that it has taken them this long to discover the pond! No doubt that’s where they will be spending much of their time from now on! I didn’t realize the pond was so deep! Is it spring fed? And how wonderful that you are helping the little corner store. We have lost many of them around here.

    • the pond is not close to the barn so they needed to go a little further to find it. I realized they had been unable to get through the hedge in a straight line so I pruned them a hole yesterday so they had a visual from a distance. This might have helped.

  2. I am so glad that you chose to get more ducks. I’m glad you’re getting some rain as well. Ours is gone for the foreseeable future. I think having a corner store would be vital given how far out you are. There will be those who won’t notice until one day it doesn’t open again so I hope the FB presence helps. The photo of Vandal and Lulu is sweet and really what else can you do when you are covered in fur and it’s summer 🙂

  3. Poor old Quacker, seems her lonely life is to continue a bit longer. First her flock disappears and then her soul mate Mr Flowers. Lets hope a drake realises what a good catch she will be when he’s mature enough.

  4. The ducks are so cute! My cat didn’t like the fireworks at all and was a wreck. She’ll probably nap a lot today. Of course, when doesn’t she?

  5. I can only imagine the happy racket and splashing when they launched. Ducks are very endearing but the only ones I’ve ever had (Cayugas) were very flighty and ended up as fox-food because they simply wouldn’t come home at night. I think yours are being properly brought up from the start!

  6. I only have one duck and Betty is 14 years old. She has a small pool and I don’t believe there’s anything happier than a duck with fresh water. She flaps and dunks and splatters water everywhere.
