Rich Golden Light of Sunset

The turkeys put themselves to bed last night. I came out a little later than usual to herd them back to their house and they were already there!

Their piece of tree looks like a whales head. I didn’t notice that until I took the picture. Do you see it?

Lulu – the oldest barn cat.

She followed me everywhere yesterday evening. She prefers kitchen scraps for dinner – I think her teeth are getting old. She waits until the other cats are fed in the barn then comes up to look mournfully through the kitchen door. She is small and prefers not to be touched – something I really appreciate about her.

The light was that rich golden light just as the sun begins to set.

These Guinea Hogs are going to get over their cuteness fast. They have a built-for-work, no nonsense look about them already.

Today is chook house day. We clean out the front half of the hen house and then rake the bedding from the back, to the front then lay fresh straw in the back. A never ending system.

All the feed and water bowls will be cleaned and refilled. Having regular help means we keep up to date on the farm housekeeping and maintenance which is a wonderful thing. The chook house housekeeping used to drag at me, always being skipped as something came up and the longer I left it the worse it got. Of Course!

R and I will discuss another roost for the baby layers. I will look in the junk yard for another long metal pipe.

We have run out of bagged autumn leaves from town (we use these in the laying boxes) – we need to collect even more this fall. People rake their leaves and put them into big plastic bags for the township to take to the dump. Horrors. I drive the alleys and collect them before the township can get them. Those bags of leaves are gold! If they start to compost they are wonderful in the garden too.

I have always wanted a small town of my own. Imagine all the awesome sustainable regenerative things we could with our own small town. Of course I would fire the council. I hate committees! I would probably become a despot! 😂

Good morning! R and her grand-daughter will be along soon, (every Tuesday and Thursday) gathering restaurant scraps as they go. Between them they know a lot of people and gather food stuff destined for the skip from businesses all along their route, making their plan (to grow food out here for their families too) quite sustainable.

I will get the tractor and clean the concrete pad in the yards, then remake the new compost pile, the BRATS (Barn Raised Avian Terrorists) and the roosters got into it and flicked it everywhere with their busy feet.

Time for me to get going.

I went to the hairdresser yesterday and told her to cut my hair summer short so she did and now I HATE IT! But as my old Dad always said there is only two weeks between a bad haircut and a good one. And my hair grows super fast, thankfully.

Sigh.

Take care. Talk soon.

  1. Perhaps not such stupid turkeys after all?? You are so fortunate to have found a helper in R and her various family. What a boost for both of you, set on the same path. Is there a Sunday newsletter ahead that may tell us how you found each other? I laughed out loud at the admission that you cruise the alleys for leaf bags- that is just so Celi! While founding a town may not be possible maybe founding a group with more R’s and like minded folks into the future- your own small commune set on a small parcel of the farmy sharing some of those amazing ideas you have. I see you as a wise matriarch rather than a despot 🙂

  2. That golden light, sumptuous. The header picture of the black piglets make it difficult they will turn into “worka hogs”, will still be charmed by them l’m sure. I have really short grey hair and wouldn’t have it any other way. Just wash, rub and run! Oh yes and how elegant the turkeys look now.

  3. Ahhhh……a bad haircut. When I get one I always remind myself that I am glad I still have hair on my head!haha

  4. I always hate my hair cut right after. But in a week or so I’m ok with it. Sounds like a productive day. I love that the turkeys went to bed on their own!

  5. I’m sure your town would start by banning HOAs that make people cut down trees and keep lawns. Instead, everyone would be encouraged to turn their front yards into vegie gardens and their back yards to the keeping of chickens. There would be a depot for compostable waste where everyone could drop off green stuff and pick up mature compost. Food shops and cafes would be encouraged to feed the homeless with unsold food, the homeless would be housed in return for a few hours of work in the community gardens. The People’s Shed would repair and renovate household items, clothing and tools. I could go on. I’ve thought about this too…
