Not Long Now

Two more days to go for me here in the hot dry suburbs of Visalia, California! Then back to Illinois and The Farmy.

One more guest post to go for you – coming tomorrow. Yay!

The guest posts have been a great success. I am really grateful to our contributors. They were awesome. We have been talking about writing.

If you are missing The Farmy pop over to the newsletter – my team took some photos for you. Plus I finally wrote about traveling light!

Traveling in an environmentally responsible way is nearly impossible, so every little bit helps. Only taking carry-on reduces weight; weight equals energy. So less weight takes less fuel to carry. Not packing huge bags and lugging big containers of stuff all around the world is my tiny contribution. Not to mention, much easier on my arms, and more elegant.

And of course I plant trees as my carbon co-pay.

My walks around the neighborhood, before the kids awake, continue as I work to keep my fitness high. The farm is physically hard work in the summer. So I can’t let my body go soft – even for a week.

My hay fever is starting to play up here too – the almond tree shaking has begun. To pick almonds they get a great big machine that grabs the tree by the trunk and shakes the whole tree vigorously so all the ripe nuts fall out. The dust is dreadful – big clouds of fine sandy dust rise up out of the trees. If you are driving past it looks like a fog.

Later when the dust has settled a sweeper comes through then all the almonds are vacuumed up off the ground and taken away.

The dust from this harvest leaves us sniffing with raspy throats.

When I get back we will open the gate to the Mad Kings Garden and let The Charlottes clean that up. That should keep them busy for a while. We will also start prepping for another batch of meat birds. Time to get back to work.

Thursday is travel day and Friday we are back at the farm.

Pop over to read the Sustainable Sunday newsletter if you have a moment and sign up if you have not already. Unless you have upgraded to The Tenners (who get surprise videos every now and then and help me with R and D) the free Sustainable Sunday newsletter only comes out once a week. So you will not be overwhelmed and neither will I!

This coming Sunday we will do a video Walk About as I check each group of animals.

So sign up to get the newsletter delivered into your inbox every Sunday. And thank you so much – all of you!

Ok! Enjoy your last guest post tomorrow and see you back on the Farmy Friday morning!

Take care and talk soon.

  1. I’m trying to learn to pack lighter–your post on it was a great inspiration. I get tripped up with the books, computer, and writing stuff I want to take. I’m constantly amazed at the huge suitcases some of our workshop participants bring. A couple European train rides and they are vowing to never again pack so carelessly. There is much hoisting of luggage on those trains and it is always a mad rush!

  2. Hope you have had a good time, though the almond shaking sounds dreadful. Wishing you a good journey home and farmy in a good way on your return. Looking forward to the Sunday walkabout video already, thank you.
