I lose Sleep so I can a Read

You too!?

Hah!

We are a pair. 😂

I only have time to read at night. So if it is a good book – I am losing sleep. What’s our next read? What did you just finish? If it is good don’t forget to drop the title into our very own Library!

Chicks are here! All present and correct. But they arrived cold. So they got a ride home sat on the heated car seat!

Three day old chicks

Chicks just look grumpy!

I just checked them at sunrise and they are still doing ok. Even with the coolness of another 50F morning. I have covered their brooder with boards to keep the warmth in but allow a little ventilation.

But not for long. They need lots of air or dampness creeps in. Not drafts. Just air. So I will be taking the lids back off shortly. There is a balance between mollycoddling a chick and encouraging hardiness. And they adapt well as their feathers begin to grow in.

Crazy weather. Some areas of the country have excessive heat and we are unusually cold.

Chicks in home made brooder

But this is great weather for hay! We should be baling today if all goes well. Maybe late this afternoon – after a cool airy drying day. A breeze would be great!

The turkeys have begun to gobble – like – well – turkeys. I do love their sounds.

Walking in the early evening.

One of my favorite times of the day.

Good morning!

Have a lovely kind of day!

  1. This building I have moved into has a community library. Everyone donates their books. They are free for the taking! My last two reads are: Nina George’s ‘The Book of Dreams’ and Michael Crummy’s ‘Galore’. I am currently lost in Leon Uris’s ‘Trinity’. Hurray for the chicks. Here’s hoping the warmer weather finds you this weekend.

  2. I, too, lose sleep to read… only on the other end of the day. I rise early to read for an hour or so in the mornings.

I just finished Barbara Kingsolver’s ‘Animal Dreams’, a compelling read. Actually, the first Kingsolver I have read and I will definitely be seeking more.

I’m not sure what’s next… I am considering a second attempt at Doris Lessing’s ‘Golden Notebook’. I started it many many years ago and it didn’t pull me in. But, I was in a very different space then.

    May your chicks flourish, enjoy!

  3. If I’m at all sleepy reading makes things worse. I find my eyes closing even if I want to stay awake! I love that the turkeys are finally turning into real turkeys with their voices. Maybe there will be a breakthrough and they will smarten up a bit as well.

  4. We are cool down here too! 60* this morning, but will get to 90* by this afternoon! We have a hot spell coming with no rain. Thank goodness we have drip irrigation in the garden! I must read every night too. Sometimes it’s not for a long period, but it is a must!

    • I am wondering if I need to go down the back and water the pumpkins. I don’t usually but it getting dry again. Drip irrigation sounds great! Do you get problems with moths building webs in the tubes?

      • No, no problems with moths, but we do have to clean the filters coming from the big tanks periodically as we have hard water full of minerals here that clog filters and slows the pressure on everything both inside and outside the house. Sadly Wax Moths got to one of our bee hives this summer and we lost it. They are horrible!

  5. I love the updates and the survey of rour stomping grounds. The chicks are cute. I remember my first batch of chicks, on Easter Sunday, 2007 and remember my efforts to keep them warm that cold first few weeks. Did you get a particular breed of chicken?

  6. I read where and when I can. My eyes are bleary at night, and light is bad, so I don’t get much “free” uninterrupted time to read. I have piles of books in various places where I can settle down, which is usually when I’ve done the day’s most pressing tasks and have a minimum of other demands on attention.

  7. I love reading in bed at night. I read in kindle and therefore have an app on my phone in order that l can read when out and about with any waiting time. Have just finished a book by Sarah Perry, Enlightenment, love her books though they are rather “English”. Positive turkey news, ha ha! Hang in there chicks. Bonkers weather here too, hot then cold then windy, 3 seasons over a few days! Scary stuff.

    • Thank you for the book recommendation! I also gave the kindle app on my phone. It is the best way to carry a book. Then if I completely love the kindle version I buy the book to take to my daughter. She only reads real books!! 🙄

  8. I stay up late to read too although I don’t have the upkeep of a farm! It always seems like turkeys gobbling is a stereotype, but it sounds like it’s real. 🙂 Cute chickies.

  9. I too read in bed before sleep, as well as any other time I can during the day. I will be starting the 70th book of the year, haven’t decided what it’ll be yet. A lot of my reading is researching the historical members of my late husband’s family, of which there are lots (Plantagenets, Tudors, Valois, Bourbon, Hapsburgs, etc.) and the events in European history and then there are all the American people and events. Harder to find biographies of the American relatives, ordinary people don’t seem to have biographies written about them. I just finished “American Ramble” by Neil King, Jr. He walks from his home in Washington, D.C. to Central Park in New York a couple years ago. Ivan Doig writes wonderful novels, as does David Rhodes. All the novels by Miss Read or Ellis Peters, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, Win Blevins, Dawn Lee McKenna, Alison Weir, Sharon Kay Penman and many more.

  10. I’m reading reviews and previews of Romy Gill’s ‘India: Recipes from Home’ and trying not to drool too much. It doesn’t come out till the beginning of next month, and I have it on pre-order. She cooks both Punjabi and Bengali dishes, which are both favourites for me, so I’m fairly impatient to start trying. I have a fairly extensive spice collection thanks to my Bengali friend, so maybe I’ll make some spiced pumpkin and sweet potato for lunch and pick some green beans to go with…

    • Oh my goodness- even your lunch sounds delicious-I am picking tomatoes so am eating tomato sandwiches every day until the harvest is gone. I never ever buy tomatoes so .. I will read about this recipe book – though I wish I had a Bengali friend too / let alone a slice collection!

      • My winter tomatoes have just started to ripen. I have Tropics, which are heat tolerant, Romas and a black heritage one whose name I forget. Home made multigrain bread, Camembert and thick slices of fresh tomato… 😛
