I Hate to Say It

(Because you know how I dread the winters out here): I hate to say it but we now must release the F word out into the Farmy vernacular. FALL is beginning to be felt.

Though I prefer the word Autumn which is what we say in New Zealand. As in Autumnal. I love that word. It is so musical in a tenory kind of way.

‘The word autumn predates fall in English. Autumn entered the language in the 1300s from the Latin autumnus, while fall, a shortening of “fall of the leaf,” emerged later in the 1500s. By the late 1600s, autumn became the preferred term in Britain, whereas fall gained popularity in America during the 18th century and remains common there today’

Thank you Merriam-Webster.

HERE is your TKG Sunday Newsletter!

Starring the ‘world famous on the Farmy’ walk-about.

A barn hen appeared with 11 chicks on Friday.

She is keeping them in the junkyard which is not ideal for tiny chicks.

Plus it was very windy yesterday. And getting cooler. Not ideal for tiny chicks either. But so far so good!

Both the charlottes and the white chickens have two more weeks on the farm. And then I can stand down from the high performance farming. It has been full on.

But as I have said before – this is a farm. Not a zoo.

Good morning!

Have a lovely day.

Take care and talk soon.

  1. Totally agree that autumn is a nicer word that fall. But either way, I love this season so much! It’s gorgeous here.

  2. Autumn is a wonderful word. I try to use it instead of fall. This season is about so much more than leaves coming off the trees. I love Boo in that first pic! I think he likes to show that is not always a working dog on a 24/7 schedule. He knows how to take a few moments here and there for himself 😉

    • that dog is such a card. He’s full on funny. Then is out trying to dig out another predator he has sniffed out in the barn. Deep in the haystacks. I don’t know what it is, it might be another possum but there’s been a few chickens killed in there as well. He is in full hunt mode or full lie down asleep on the floor mode. Ok’ Boo.

  3. Autumn has arrived in the UK as well. We are having some gorgeous sunny days at the moment. I’m away for a few days, staying near the Northumberland coast. A pick-me-up before the short days of winter. The air always feels fresher by the sea!

  4. Autumn every time for me. The last few days in UK have suddenly turned cold over night and the leaves are turning and falling now. Though apparently it is going to get warmer again later this week. Pleased to hear that some animals are on the move soon lightening your load just a little bit. Good luck to those little chicks.🐣

  5. Fall and autumn are both beautiful words. Fall represents to me the falling of leaves and of the light of summer. It’s bittersweet but the change of seasons is so natural.

  6. I would be happy to have Autumn all year. We are having a cool start to southern hemisphere Spring. We’ve never before had the woodfire going so late in the year… I think we’ll need to rethink our seasonal expectations.

  7. I miss Autumn. We jump straight from winter to summer, no transition. Dale’s part of the world has very picturesque autumns, lots of colour, woodsmoke drifting, heavy dew on the grass.

Have you noticed how few words end in …mn? Autumn, column, hymn, damn, condemn, solumn. I’m sure there’s probably a poem in there for someone to extract. And now, of course, after too much thought the words all look really strange!
