Yesterday afternoon Mary’s Cat, Thing Two, TonTon and I walked the fences checking for holes. Naturally we had company.
Thing Two and Mary’s Cat were particularly vigilant about checking fences. They like everyone to be in their proper places.
Speaking of which the chickens are behind bars again until the ground is frozen. I am going to put the mulch around the vines and fruit trees and they have a history of scratching it all out. So this is lock up time again for them. To say they are not thrilled would be an understatement!
THING two seems to need to test the wire for strength!
Daisy still plays with her rocking horse, because no-one will let her have a real horsey. She has had this rocking horsey since she was a calf. It used to be on springs and she liked it better then because it would play back, but she is a big cow now and it is a little horsey so it lost its spring!!.
Queenie wants a turn, but Daisy does not like to share.
Queenie has her own toy.
Now, is it just me or do you think that Mama (right) is looking fatter?! Remember she had quads (four lambs) last time. I am rather hoping she does not do this again. That was a messy day! This time she is due from mid January on.
Actually I think Hairy MaClairy is looking pregnant too!! There is no real grass left in the fields so I have to consider bringing all the stock in or risk over grazing, which will be to the detriment of our spring growth. But I believe animals need lots of natural light so I hate to bring them into the barn until I have to. They have extra feed in the barn with their doors open but the sheep are not interested yet. And the weather is still so mild.
All the fences are secure. No holes. Walkabout is over.
We can get some work done now. Time to make bread.

Very nice. Sometimes your posts remind me of James Heriot’s books. Are you a fan at all. Welcome back to the dreary/beautiful Midwest.
I do remember James Heriot. I would like to read him again, it has been ages! Thanks Neil. c
At least you have sun, it’s pouring here! Your farm looks so peaceful and all of the animal pictures are amazing. I refuse to think about any preggo sheep that may end up in the menu. Remember, it has to be a sheep you did not know 😉
It has just started to rain here too, which is good. And remember if it has a name we don’t eat it, so you can relax!! Poor Miss T.. c
I love your stories and pictures of the farm!
Thank you Phyllis it was time we did a catch up!
Great photos!
hi Joy and thank you.. soon it will be too cold to wander about with the camera!! c
Gosh I love your cats and other ani-mules. It looks like they all have a lot of character 🙂
They are a little book in themselves, Kaitlin! If I only knew what was going on in their wee brains! c
Bread? Yum… I have to bake some more for Thanksgiving.
While I was away John had to bake his own. He baked the day I came back and actually I prefer his bread but alas he prefers MINE! (as he would) c
I love farms…I especially enjoy the photo of the cat gnawing on the fence — so cute. 🙂

Hi Mel, that was a lucky shot wasn’t it!! especially as we were walking the fences to look for any damage.. c
Is good to be back, isn’t it? Thanks for the walkabout 🙂
Everything looks great.
morning Giovanna. It does seem to be going ok.. long may it last!. c
I love that the cat and cow are friends!
Hi Greg, yes that Thing Two just loves cows. He will still sleep with the younger calves. c
Lovely post. Sorry you’re low on grass. Unbelievably, the farmer has just cut a THIRD lot of hay in the field behind the house. As least there won’t be a hay shortage this year as there has been for two years. We have had an incredible Autumn, and the lawn is still growing like Billyo.
Hi ViV, three cuts of hay is good, we are putting in another two acres next spring, and imagine how excited John will be with his haybaler, WE won’t be short of feed next year I am sure!! (laugh) .. c
There’s just no resting on your laurels after so nice a visit out West, is there? I can so identify with Daisy. I had a rocking horse — until it, too, lost its spring. I was very lucky that the banditos never came back cuz, in the movies, a cowboy without a horse is just an extra waiting to get shot.
That is cute. i can just imagine you with your little broken horsey and your little gun and your little plate of pasta!! c
Well,no need to imagine. In this pic my horsey is fine and I’m not dressed in my cowboy attire but, hey, even cowboys have to sleep. Here’s the link, but if it doesn’t print properly, the pic is in the Pasta in Bianco post of 10/10. Here’s the link: http://fromthebartolinikitchens.com/2010/10/20/pasta-in-bianco-plain-pasta/
I saw it and I am amazed! You really did have the horsey, I think you had the deluxe model..AND Oh MY you had a lot of hair for a little fella!! c
Lovely to see everyone is shipshape and dapper, weight gain or otherwise 🙂
Well those sheep have been in the good paddock and it shows! c
Wonderful photos. Quads eh? What a day that must have been. I have a pal in Scotland who breeds some special sheep (Limoges – could that be right?) and they all lamb together…pals from London head up to help out and a tiring but wonderful time is had by all the troops!
I could have done with The Pals from london that day, It was the first time I had been totally in charge of lambing, ( I had done it before on other friends farms) i know it was only one ewe, but Mama just kept laying lambs all over the pen and was as confused and shocked as me! There was a lot of bleating and it was not all sheep! c
Yay! Pictures!
A good day! c
I think you’re right, the chickens do NOT look happy to be caged up. Just look at their faces lol.. not happy at all. And Daisy just is to adorable for words in my book
those chooks, if looks could kill!! Thanks Kay.. c
