Walkabout on the Farmy!

Yesterday afternoon Mary’s Cat, Thing Two, TonTon and I walked the fences checking for holes. Naturally we had company.
Thing Two and Mary’s Cat were particularly vigilant about checking fences. They like everyone to be in their proper places. Speaking of which the chickens are behind bars again until the ground is frozen. I am going to put the mulch around the vines and fruit trees and they have a history of scratching it all out.  So this is lock up time again for them. To say they are not thrilled would be an understatement! THING two seems to need to test the wire for strength!

Daisy still plays with her rocking horse, because no-one will let her have a real horsey.   She has had this rocking horsey since she was a calf. It used to be on springs and she liked it better then because it would play back, but she is a big cow now and it is a little horsey so it lost its spring!!.
Queenie wants a turn, but Daisy does not like to share. Queenie has her own toy. Now, is it just me or do you think that Mama (right) is looking fatter?! Remember she had quads (four lambs) last time. I am rather hoping she does not do this again. That was a messy day! This time she is due from mid January on. Actually I think Hairy MaClairy is looking pregnant too!! There is no real grass left in the fields so I have to consider bringing all the stock in or risk over grazing, which will be to the detriment of our spring growth.   But I believe animals need lots of natural light  so I hate to bring them into the barn until I have to. They have extra feed in the barn with their doors open but the sheep are not interested yet. And the weather is still so mild.

All the fences are secure.  No holes. Walkabout is over.

We can get some work done now.  Time to make bread.

  1. Love your farm photos! They just say…well…farm! And with the horizon stretching forever in the background. You are in the middle of wide open everywhere! Until the corn grows again.

  2. I agree with everyone here: a particularly wonderful post! You can tell we’ve all been missing the wee farmy as much as you have, if anything. 🙂 Obviously you chose your various animal companions for their charm *and* good looks, as they’re all ridiculously winsome and beautiful and outstanding in their various roles. Thing Two simply oozes self-assurance as he does his dental and ocular inspection of the fences, and yes, the chooks make their opinions known in oh-so-many ways. Good to know that all’s right in the world, with the exception of Daisy’s–and John’s–rocking horses losing the spring in their step. Guess it comes to us all eventually. 😉 So glad the rest of the crew are all in such fine fettle!

    • Thank you kathryn. the farm has taken on so much more character since I began the Farmy Walkabouts with my Blog Friends. I often see something and go ‘bugger. where is the camera! they would have liked that shot!’ so I kind of carry you all about as I do my day..Not lonely anymore.. c

  3. All of these photos are killing me, Cecilia, they’re absolutely adorable. The photo of Daisy and her rocking horse is my favorite. Well, and the photo of Queenie and your kitty. Too cute!

  4. Hi Caroline, Queenie has decided she has not been getting enough exposure, (with Daisy endlessly stealing the limelight) so she has started to play to the camera! Just imagine HER when she is 1500 pounds of Hereford Mama!.. c

  5. Those chickens look PISSED!!!!!

    LOL!!!

Poor things, but they can do serious damage. They tore through my zucchinis this summer before I go wind of what was up and banned them from the garden!

Thing Two looks just like a cat we “adopted” (he really adopted us) back in Philly, named Bixby. So pretty.

    LOVE your photos.

    Happy Thanksgiving, my friend!

  6. Thank you christin, i have one flock that i can lock up but there is a wild flock who lives in the barn rafters barn flock .. they never been caged so they are still out there grubbing about.. happy Giving Thanks to you also.. c

  7. Glad to see all your fences are safe – who breaks through them? Do you have predators lurking on the other side in the dark? Or is it the farm animals who get out… In England sheep are always getting out, jumping drystone walls or doing a roll over the cattle grids… I saw one once cross a grid on its knees in the Lake District, though the lambs tend to slip through when they try it and you have to hoik them out. Baaa!

    • Ok that made me laugh .. a sheep going over the cattle stop on its knees!!.. baaa! The only threat to the fences is Daisy she leans on the wires and sometimes we need to prop them up again, mostly walking the fences is what I say when i take the dogs for a fast trot! I love those dry stone walls but sheep are such climbers..c

  8. Those shots of Thing Two “testing” the wire, Queenie peering around the post at Daisy and with Thing Two, and Daisy with her rocking horse are just wonderful. So glad to be back on the farm with you!

    • The crazy thing is that i go out on the farmy walkabout with the camera with no set shots in mind and then they just evolve. I have almost learnt to trust the environment to supply me with images! lucky me.. c

    • They are the walkabout cats to be sure.. Though I am not sure that Mary’s Cat got a lot of exercise while I was away, he is putting on the pounds!! or as we say in NZ.. putting on the pies! c
