Miss C gets her groove back

The country house was heaving with children. The wedding  punctuated by baby gurgles and laughter.  We attended the ceremony under the trees, seated in rows of white chairs under big old trees planted by Johns grandfather and father.  I sat ever so calmly in my lovely summer dress my legs demurely tucked to the side. Heels together like my mother taught me. My hands  laid in my lap. But the moment it was over, like a racehorse out of the gates,  I ran for the car and raced back  to the farmy through country roads.  Got back home by 4.30, and tripped through the house dropping shoes, and clothes, ting went rings and bangles. Hair stuffed back into a farm hat.

On with the  farm clobber and boots  and out I went to do the chores.  The animals were hot and noisy.  I was only a tiny bit late but they were not impressed.  I moved from one group to the next feeding, watering and settling.  Daisy swanned in to be milked and swanned back out again followed by Hairy. Everything settled down and went quiet.

I trotted back to the house, kicking off gumboots and shedding dirty farm clothes like a caterpillar. Ran through the shower, picked my wedding dress up off the floor, stepped back into the heels, rings, bangles, lipstick and dark sunglasses, then transformed back into the wedding guest, butterflied my way back to the wedding.

Just in time for the next round of bubbly.

We were home at dusk to finish and all was peaceful.

Though look at Mama. Time to have her in to look at her feet.    We have to do Mama’s feet frequently and she hates it. I walked  the rat house field where the sheep are and beside the root cellar I found that the chickens had scratched up some very old glass, bits of a broken green glass bowl,  which is a worry for any animal in the area.  The old people before us  pushed soil up on either side of the root cellar to keep it cool, they may have thrown rubbish in there too. I will need to do some investigations.

Good morning.  The wedding was an outdoor affair so I was able to wear my sunglasses the whole time. The bride was giddy and we were well fed and watered. Today there are wedding people from the city coming out to visit the farm with their children, so I had better pretty it up a bit this morning.

My eye is still red but no longer aches. Thank you all so much for your wonderful care and concern yesterday.  You are a fantastic support team.  This morning I am ahead of myself and getting my groove back.  It will be a good day. We will nail it today. You and I.

You have a great day too!

  1. Whew.. I was panicking for you a bit as you rushed about! Don’t days like that make you feel like super-woman, though.. “hey, just look what I can get done in a day”! So glad you were able to wear the glasses and pull that disguise off! I ADORE your photos of the lovely little bridesmaid..so sweet:) xoxo Smidge

  2. Fab post. I feel exhausted just reading this. Pleased to hear the eye is better.

  3. Amazing how those wee beasties settle in when there’s no human audience. Thank goodness your eye is feeling better, Celi. That’s scary at the best of times – but to have it happen just before you have to do your Farmerella routine!

You have no idea how many times I’ve longed to be there to help!

  4. Wow! What a day, and I loved the account of thewhirlwind transition from wedding guest to farmer and back again! I’ve been reading Jane Austen, where the ladies sat in parlours while the men dealt with the outside world. How times have changed. I remember the slogan Girls can do anything’ – well you certainly are proving it true. Love the vibrant pictures of the little girl, such a classic image of femininity (sigh).

  5. I was trying to figure out which animal is Miss C. Duh! Glad its coming together for you. That was quite a trip to the wedding and back, then back to the wedding again!

  6. I’m getting caught up with the farmy news from a backwards glance today, Celi! We had a house full of company ourselves this weekend for a family wedding of our own! I’m glad you’re okay, of course, and completely amuses/impressed/wow! at the level of responsibility you maintain…that was quite a rush!! 🙂 Sounds like it has been a happy occasion…Debra

  7. Omg, your description of legs demurely to the side, heels together, hands in lap = the way I grew up as well. Too amusing! As I’ve been away for a couple of weeks, I did not realize you had a groove to GET back – but glad to know you are on the mend and taking the most extraordinary photos, once again – the little girl in the red/orange dress is striking against the background of green(s) … healing and peace on the farmy to you!

  8. Forget the book – it’s a movie. This is a great scene. (You can just see the quick change from wedding to farm lady managing stock and back) Have no doubt you will someday be supervising the film production…between feedings….
Cute little girl in that orange – such contrast – perfect for this time of year and the day.
The wedding day sounds lovely for all
