Guess what?! We are all good today.

Yesterday flowed. It trickled along from one thing to the next. And at every bus stop of the day, my little metaphorical red bus puttered up,  work got on or off in a gentle orderly fashion. Work was started and finished and wandered back down the circular road of life without hurry.

I am thinking of weaning Minty from her twice daily bottle…

But until she stops jumping her fat body through all my gates

I may as well just give her the milk. She needs lots of building up anyway, so she can be a good productive healthy ewe.

Daisy is most definitely on the mend now. She will soon be smelling sweet like my old Paisley Daisy. She gave two and a half gallons of white creamy milk twice yesterday. That is 5 gallons or 18 litres of milk a day.  My skinny girlie arms are getting a work out carrying that bucket!

And look what happened when my back was turned. I am taking my favourite shovel on my morning walk today to grub out these thistles. It is one thing to have the fields drying up through lack of rain, but Quite Another to have GREEN thistles growing with such disgusting vigour in amidst it.

Good morning. There was something else I was going to tell you but at 5.15 am it has dropped completely out of my head.  I spoke with my favourite hay man and we are going to go over on the weekend with trucks and trailers and teenagers with gloves to collect 100 bales of good alfalfa hay. His production is already down by a quarter, so I am grabbing it while I can.   We will probably cut ours once later on but the quality and quantity will both be less than expected.

Good morning. Once more it is dawning clear and a little cooler than normal which is brilliant for the animals. I can see Daisy lying quietly waiting in the field close to Pat’s Gate. After I wrote to you yesterday I called out Good Morning Daisy,  from the kitchen window.  Then filled the buckets with hot water and by the time I got to the barn she was there too.  What a girl. Though she has decided that she will not be hurried OUT of the milking parlour afterward.  She likes to watch me clean her milker. She is going to move on in her own time, thank you very much. Thats fine Daisy. She waits until I start cleaning the floor then she lazily sways out the door.

I have been looking for a shot that says Summer for our header. I put up the jumping lamb last night but this morning when I look again, I don’t think it is summery enough. So we need to look out for another one.  I like to change it with the season.

Have a lovely day. I am off out to milk my cow. Then feed everyone.  Then bake the bread. Then todays cake which is lemon and lavender. Maybe I will make the lavender jelly today too. I will see if I have everything I need!

Have fun.

  1. When it is dry around here thistles are the ONLY things that grow and stay green. On my way home from work the other night I saw a crew mowing the road ditch and baling it..do you do that for extra? Looked like grass and some clover. Glad to hear everything has righted itself out at your place? I made some low fat brownies (not that you need them)…I can send one or some out on the route for you to taste if you’d like…

    • I would love a brownie , but I think i have missed the mailman! poo.. i was out mucking out the pig sty! double poo.. I worry about smashed cans in the hay from doing the roadsides, but someone must be getting desperate for hay to be baling that.. c

      • well..I only had one brownie with me today…and I was not parting with that one! ha
I don’t know if they walk the ditchbank first and then cut it…but a lot of the road side grass has been mowed between home and work and you can tell someone baled because there is no leftover grass laying anywhere. Last week about 5 miles south of the Old Codgers house I saw them filling a hay rack with bales from the roadside . But I hear ya about stuff being thrown along the road and laying in the grass…could tear up your machinery.

  2. I love the lamby pic, but the lavender you took the other day looked summery too. You never updated us on the Old Codgers progress and home coming, is all ok? Laura

    • The old Codger is now gearing up to fight his way out. they think he is too wobbly but he has had enough, they are just concerned for his safety, it is such a genuine place but he is being a wee bit pig headed. i will see what we learn on friday!

    • And in the midst of milking last night i was handed a parcel with a new pinny in it and other divine things, how about that for a perfect milking!! c

  3. Would you look at that cutiepie Minty jumping through the fence – clever little girl.
I’m so please Daisy is nearly back to normal too.
Have the crust of that divine bread you are going to bake with a thick layer of butter on with a cup of tea for me, thanks!
    🙂 Mandy

  4. I’m so happy to hear that balance is now restored…you need to have your equilibrium in place to manage all those heavy bales of alfalfa! I get a chuckle out of my “I can relate” stories…of course, there is NO way that I can really relate to the amount of work you do and the importance of keeping the farmy well and heatlhy, but my observations of how much one little rabbit eats has given me at least a glimmer of how important that hay really is! I hope you get the lavender jelly made soon…I want a taste! Debra

    • I think rabbits eat more than any other animal.. well except maybe pigs.. but even they only eat little bits at a time, a rabbit eats ALL the time, esp in my vege garden! morning debra.. c

  5. Glad Daisy is improving. I was worried. Balances are shifting here, and hopefully, reseting for a true restoration. Will you kindly share your lavendar lemon cake recipe? It sounds perfect, as lemon is my favorite and lavendar makes everything special.

  6. That is wonderful news….so glad to hear Daisy is getting her mooo back on! 🙂 And love the header…if hopping lambs don’t say spring and summer… nothing does!! I wish I could smell your kitchen when you bake those lovely cakes!!

  7. I so enjoy this blog! Not sure what I did before I found you. You lead such a different life than mine. I have been inspired to initiate some things that I might not have otherwise. Yesterday I bought herbs to plant. Today I am having a healthy salad made of organic greens. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. (wink and a smile) Anyway, thank you for being such an inspiration.

    • Morning Diane and WONDERFUL news about the herbs. Remember to water them and pick the tips off for your cooking frequently, even if you are not cooking them, most herbs like to be tipped often so you get lots of bushy greens. I am still waiting for my basil to come up! Maybe I should sow more! I have to have them ready for the tomatoes! c

  8. Daisy is in good hands and she knows it. A happy cow, is a contented cow, is a good milker. Our next door neighbors installed water beds for their girls. Now that’s luxury. V.

  9. I learned once that lambs jumping straight up into the air is called pronking. : )

  10. I would love the recipe for the cake and the jelly !! It sounds divine and I have lavendar
in bloom ! Hip Hip Hooray for Daisy and your instinctual care !!
My granddaughter told me yesterday that it was too bad I was too old..
to go off the diving board at the pool….well needless to say I am a wee bit stiff
today as off the diving board I went…..

All best for continued serenity ..
