I smell like a cow

Well to be precise by the end of the day yesterday I smelt like milk. Hopefully in a good way.  It was an odor that hung about me and made all the animals snuffle when I was close.

So I figured I would go the whole hog last night and  make myself a special Friday night drink with cold milk. A milky cocktail.  . Homemade yoghurt, fresh milk, farm honey, ice, local strawberries and brandy.  Blend. I was thirsty and hot so I poured it into a big red wine glass.   It needs a name.

But I was too tired to name it so I just drunk it.  I know they say you should not drink alone. But that is just another one of those stupid rules. It was after 5pm. Good enough.

While I was drinking this delightful concoction I looked at the pig bucket, waiting patiently to be carried out  and realised it had the same ingrdients, but with a little bread and watermelon rind and of course no brandy. Pretty similar though!

So I added a little corn and took it to the grubby Shush sisters.

Don’t they look sweet. However  in the interests of full disclosure I thought it only fair  you should see what pigs they make of themselves when drinking their cocktail.  They have to have their snouts where another snout is evidently. So they chase each others heads around the bowl. Snorting and sucking and squealing at each other.

And I thought I could dress these two up pretty and turn them into therapy pigs. I have another think coming!

Good morning. Daisy is standing at the gate Mooing loudly at the house and it is only 5.15.  So I had better get a wriggle on.  Beginning another milky day.

Yesterday Daisy gave five and a half gallons of white milky milk altogether.  Three of which was in the morning. My milking bucket is already at capacity.

Have a lovely day.

  1. I think I’d like to join the Shushes for a turn at that nice mix! I am so excited to be reading about your adventures as a milk maid. It is so gratifying to see a dream come to fruition. And it’s nice to read you in the morning, courtesy of a closer time zone.

  2. You are not drinking alone…we are with you.
I have the opportunity to buy a share of a milk cow at a neighboring farm. (I need to jump in don’t I?) I have lots of strawberries…and brandy is always on hand.

      • Will be meeting with the cow gal soon, 2 farms down the road. She can’t sell raw milk here in VA, but can sell shares of her cow in return for the good raw stuff. Need to figure out the details..How much milk I want, the $$ and all that. Hopefully, I will get to do a little Cow care and milking as well. I figure it’s the next best thing to having my own and a good way to learn.

  3. those shush sisters are sooo cute!!! i wonder what they would do if they had a happy time smoothie with brandy? what are you doing with all that milk? since it is not pasturized, how long does it last? you are keeping my hours lady! i am always up at 4:30-5:00.

    • Morning, raw milk in the fridge lasts for ages, when i used to buy it, we would drink it for 5 or 6 days sometimes. I say it does not really go off it just turns into another milk product. but your question is a good one and i shall write a page for tomorrow about what i know about raw milk.. Thank you for the question.. c

  4. How about calling it Princess Pink Pleasure? I’m sure the Shushies will clean up well when the time comes. Are you making ice-cream? and Custard and rice pudding and……. You will get fat. On second thoughts with all the exercise you get, I bet you could do with a bit of feeding up!

    • I hope to make ice cream and I don’t think I will get fat on milk, unless i start piling in the sugar as well!! Custard sounds good though, maybe I will make some today!! c

  5. Sitting here thinking of scones and thick real cream! Celi have you ever attempted to make blue cheese? Love those Shush sisters wearing their cocktail 🙂 Laura

    • No i have not got as far as the blue cheese yet, But I love to eat it, so i should give it a try, it needs a controlled temp to work, so maybe now i have the cave cellar it might be viable. c

  6. Your ” milking bucket is already at capacity.” How many years have you been waiting for this “problem”? 3? 4? It’s wonderful news, Celi.
I’m off to the market. Have a great day! Stay cool.

  7. Good morning, Celi. I’m off to France this evening. I will miss the goings-on at the farmy and will read my way through the two-plus weeks I miss when I get back. Have a good couple of weeks and watch those tricky pigs.
