Green Tomato Pie

You didn’t see that coming did you.  Nor did I, especially after yesterday.  Your comments from yesterday impressed on me once again that we all have such a lot on common. All living in our different worlds but dealing with so much that we can  talk about together. Thank you.

Anyway back to the Green Tomato Pie. The other day the Old Codger asked me if I knew how to make Green Tomato Pie. To tell the truth I had never even heard of Green Tomato Pie.   In fact until I came to the US I never heard of green tomato anything, let alone a sweet pie.

The next time I came to visit Dale he had found the recipe in an old old cook book. The book was open at the pie page ready for perusal.  He pointed out the recipe and with sparkling eyes wondered if I might like to try to make it.  So I did.

Basically you slice  4 green tomatoes very thinly, toss them in a little flour. Then add a cup of sugar, a little lemon juice and a wee bit of zest, a little cider vinegar, cinnamon, ginger and 3/4 cup of raisins. Layer these in your pastry and cook in a hot oven for about 40 minutes.

The old trick that I had never seen before was breadcrumbs sprinkled on the pastry first, presumably to soak up some of the juices. It worked, as the pastry stayed light and crunchy.  It passed the Old Codger taste test.

Dale really enjoyed it, warm from the oven. Next on the list to try is Dutch Apple Pie. He is looking up that recipe too. The man is a hard task master!

Good morning. I was woken this morning about 4am by the howling of coyotes. I usually get up about 4.30 so this was not too bad. I put on my old beaten up dressing gown and went outside to shout at them. The verandah is a natural megaphone and good for this task. I yelled at them to go home and go to bed and the group that was very close, presumably my usual pack, went immediately quiet. Then it became apparent there was another big pack to the West and another one to the North. All shrieking and barking and howling and caterwauling at each other.  The farmers have begun the harvest around here, ripping out the dog’s cover and they are being displaced, so the territory wars have begun again. I hope my pack is strong enough to keep the strangers out. At least my lot is trained.

I will increase our boundary walks to three times a day until the beans are out.  Also I shall dig out the sky rockets that I keep for this purpose. Wild dogs hate fire works. So for a while, every time I hear them, I shall shoot off a rocket and hope I don’t set fire to the fields.  The other thing I will do is start the radio going in the barn all night. No stock is in there but the animals are usually sleeping close by.  Hearing the human voice does help to keep wild animals at bay too.

Have a lovely day. Today I begin to prepare the finished gardens for the winter. I will do a garden a day for a while. The pigs will be happy!

  1. I have some kind of warped image of you letting rockets off – kind of th esize and effect of a teeny grenade launcher, I’m sure that’s not what you do, but that’s the image in my mind. And yum green tomatoi pie !

  2. There is a tiny cottage for sale near here… 8 1/2 acres… I’m trying to convince Rick we should buy it. He says I have no idea how much work it would be… I say yes I do – I know how hard Celi works… He rolls his eyes (!) No coyotes here to trouble us – no skunks either… or snakes…sigh.
    Crab-apple Cottage…

  3. I’ve never heard of green tomato pie and I’ve never tried fried green tomatoes. In our world, green tomatoes were wrapped in paper, put in Grandpa’s tomato drawer, and when they emerged, they had turned red. A mystery, to be sure. I can only imagine his response to seeing his green tomatoes used in any other way. I’d like to give this pie a try, though. Please don’t tell him.

  4. Had never heard of green tomatoes until the film was released! Obviously have to take time and learn 🙂 ! Coyotes – have no idea how I would react to their howling: none of them here! But I remember wartime in Europe and dogs howling all over town: it very definitely was not a good sign!! They usually sensed an air raid . . .

  5. This post is introducing me to strange things: green tomatoes and coyotes.I think I prefer the green tomatoes. The first I ever heard of them was when I watched the movie ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’. The old codger is so blessed to have you so lovingly making up his recipe and serving it warm from the oven.

  6. What a wonderful recipe, we have loads of green tomatoes that are unlikely to ripen, I might make sure some of them don’t make it into the chutney, but fall into a lovely pastry parcel as you have here.
    Cheers

  7. Green tomato pie! Brilliant! Growing up in Northern Saskatchewan we tended to have more green tomatoes than red ones. Perhaps that is way it is such a thrifty prairie favorite. Virginia
