Lambs go out and play in the snow

I began the big clean in the barn yesterday. Working our way through each pen …

… forking out all the old hay out to the compost piles..lambs-out!-009

… scraping and cleaning the concrete floors …

.. … …everything get sprinkled with diatomaceous earth to kill any bugs, then lime to dry it out

All the inhabitants are rehoused outside, except Mama and her quads whose pen has extended to include an outside door.

So spring or not we have begun to empty the filthy barn and close its rooms for the summer. If we have a bad storm they will be invited in for the night. But for now the hotel is closed. It is warm enough. And I have always maintained that any animal is better off outside where they can move away from their own excrement. Barns when they thaw are breeding grounds for bacteria.

The pigs get their turn today which will please them no end because as the thaw proceeds there will be MUD!

Good morning. You all have a lovely day!

    • Oho, me beauty! She had *me* singing the old Flanders and Swann ditty immediately too! 😉 What a magnificent washing-up the place is getting. If the house falls a little behind in this, it’s no trouble: after all, the ‘umans can be expected to figure out what’s clean and what isn’t safely enough to navigate, whereas the sheepish creatures, not so much.

    • Well, i am almost half way done with the barn, it is a slow job, the lambs will still shelter in there and the pigs will come back in at night, but two pens are clean and closed, which is a relief for sure.. c

  1. How lovely for the lambies to get out into the big wide world – and jacketless too! Ton Ton looks happy to join in too!

  2. The lambs are adorable, as usual. We’re spring cleaning here, too. As for mud, I’m going to learn to be like the pigs and enjoy it because we certainly have enough of it here in the Bogs. 🙂

    • mama was so glad to be out, sheep hate to be locked up and she had begin to pace her big pen, creating a track in the straw, she is happier now that she can get out, even though she herds the lambs back into their draft free corners pretty smartly.. c

  3. They’re getting so BIG! I’m about to take DE to the critters to do some preventive for fleas and lice as the weather is getting so warm. Over 60 yesterday and supposed to be 65 today!

  4. The lambs grow so quickly. I love their coloring. Hope you get some sunshine now after your snow. Our six inches is almost gone after yesterday and today in the 50’s .

  5. Yesterday was beautiful here, and today seems more of the same. Spent the whole day out in the garden or in the green house. Looking at your nice clean barn is making me determined to do the same with the chicken house next weekend. So need to get in new straw and give the whole place a good clean. Unlike you though, this hotel has to stay open all year round, but they have a window and door that gets to stay open when the sun is shining!

    • My chook house definitely needs attention, though daisy has worked out how to break in, and has taken to sleeping in there.. so at the moment their big door has had to be shut so she does not make a mess in there.. poor chooks!.. c

      • Oh my I haven’t heard them called that in a long while LOL. I still say “Chooky Eggs” though hehehehe!
