Happy Talk Farmy Days

Happy talk, keep talking happy talk, Talk about things you’d like to do, You gotta have a dream,  if you don’t have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true?

Do you remember South Pacific?  When we were very young my Mum and Dad took us to see the musical. I never forgot it. I was in love… with Bloody Mary. My mother was not entirely approving of my choice. Though I never understood why for quite some time. Still, I have also been known to ‘wash that man right out of my hair!’ A sentiment she did approve of.

Like a real life soundtrack the lyrics have cycled through my head all my life. Except I always remembered the first line of Bloody Mary’s song as Happy, Happy , Happy, Happy talk.  So I have rewritten it. Sometimes it is the right time to talk happy, it works you know.

And you’ve got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how will you know when that dream comes true?

I always dreamt of having a little farm and living all day with the animals in the gardens.

Dreams can be hard work.

But worth the work. We all need a dream. One we can achieve. Developing a sustainable, self sufficient,  simple life is one of my dreams.

We grow more than piglets though you know.

We also grow shade!

We have finished cutting a very heavy field of the good hay.  It was thick and so tall after all this rain, that the cutting took a long time and is rough in patches. Day One of drying commences today. Hopefully three good hot days will do it. And we will bale it on the fourth or fifth. Fingers crossed the weather holds for us…

Good morning. I hope you are  going to have a lovely day.  Thank you all for your wonderful support and generous comments, I gain so much information from your writing in the Comments Lounge and do appreciate it. So you may all rest assured that you are also actively involved in my dream. And essential to its success. You are part of The Kitchen’s Garden Farm.

Ok, it is 5.30 am. Dawn is here. Time to get to work.

  1. Those are my kind of dreams. Happy and happen are very similar words… we are happy when dreams happen… the results of a lot of hard work. Good to see Big Dog 🙂

  2. I read your opening line thinking, “Where have I heard this?” 🙂
I went out into my yard this morning and it was damp, the air full of mist, and I wondered what was happening on the farmy. I came inside and learned that this was a fog coming off The Lake and was nowhere near you. Good news for your hay! Those pig pics are really cute. Happy talk, indeed!
    Have a great evening!

    • It was a little hazy this morning but turned out to be a good drying day! Though we had a couple of storms woosh overhead much to my horror!! c

  3. Celi, I wish you would talk about the the types of hay you feed the animals. I haven’t a clue as to the various kinds of hay there are–not to mention who gets what. I was reading about the different types to feed horses and wonder what is good for YOUR brood and I do mean brood!,

    • Oh I can do a post about feed , but mostly I have grasss hay for the dry stock and a mix of grass hay and alfalfa for the mothers, gestating or milking animals..

  4. Now you have me typing and singing ‘Happy Talk’!! Of course I remember and have a true tale to tell: Much of ‘South Pacific’ was shot on the northern tip of the island of Kauai in Hawaii in the beautiful Hanalei Valley, full of waterfalls tumbling down the deep mountain sides. Perfect beach!! We stayed for some 10 days at a wonderful spa hotel called the ‘Hanalei Plantation’: guess what – Bloody Mary was working there as a tour guide taking small groups down to the Beach and telling all the stories about making the film. Would not sing more than a few notes tho’. But the film had just become very popular, most people did not know the background and, being as young as I was, I have to admit having been quite awestruck 🙂 ! She was just as she had been in the film!!!! And yes, Celi, one HAS to have dreams ere they can come true! Oh, love the size of your broccoli and those huggable piglets 😀 !

  5. You are certainly living a beautiful dream, and those little piggies are heavenly angels. Just seeing their precious little faces makes me happy. Your bees much love that garden!

    • they do, though i am concerned that the hives are growing very slowly in this strange summer, soon we will have to lift the lid and have another look, thanks for the reminder.. c

  6. The piglets are just too cute for words. “Babe” is a favourite movie of mine.
I love the new heading, it is good to see the storm gone. I was wondering if the lights in the distance behind your tractor are cars on a road or lights in buildings. Joy

  7. Good old kiwi silver beet, the staple of the garden, flowers, piggies, hay-making. It takes tenacity to make a dream come true. It must be held on to through sun and rain, thunderstorms, floods and droughts, times of despair and times of joy. You have tenacity in abundance. The piggies are so expressive. May the sun continue to shine and dry the hay, and congratulations to you Celi, the Dream Queen!

  8. I last saw South Pacific in Canada with a friend who was dying of brain cancer and will always associate it with her. She was a good friend, who had many dreams, and lived the best life she could. Strangely your post has made me very sad, but in a good way. xx Joanna

  9. Stunning photos – and I so agree, you have to have a dream otherwise how will you know when it comes true? I dreamed of living Up a Mountain and keeping chickens and then it all came true and I got the added bonus of a wonderful Big Man. Now we’re dreaming new dreams and making them come true together….I think we’re all very blessed aren’t we (although hard working too)!

  10. Happy Talk, one of my favourite songs !! I’ve requested it at my funeral along with Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life ( from Life Of Brian, Monty Python). Lovely piggies.
