So, How Many Days are there in September?

So, how many days  until the end of September? We have run into a problem I did not foresee.  We have eaten all the greens, there are no more tasty greens in the garden at the moment. The kale is decimated, it will come back though but not today. And as I am only eating out of the garden for all of September,  and the bugs ate all the beans and no running to the freezer for a bag of peas,   I am going to have to get imaginative. Scurvy looms. The new greens are still in the formative stage in the garden. My staggered planting staggered to a halt! oops.

I can start picking baby greens from this lettuce patch in a week or so. But not yet. I may have to think about turning celery into a vegetable instead of just using it for stock. I have plenty of celery. Mum used to make a celery soup when we were kids. I might try to make that today.

Young barn Flock. Son of the Son of Neanderthal Man otherwise known as Bob has stolen one of my Peghorn Leghorns. Cheeky Bloody Rooster.

Egoli has turned into quite the hunter. Tiba the other marmalade cat left me and went to live with the neighbours.  They went fishing last week and I was feeding their cat, a good mile away, when Tiba strolled in.  Snap!

Boo has learnt to jump the barn gates. I am going to show him this picture when he is older just to embarress him. Talk about struggle!

Dinner.

The Granny Smiths are small but plentiful. They will take a while to pick but we will make a good apple cider from this tree and a few others in the area. Plus today I will make another apple pie. Apple pie keeps the scurvy away you know! And the old people here used to fry apples as a side dish, I can see why now.

  1. what a month of learning for you. We never really know the changes we need to make until we step up to a challenge like this. And although you may grow tired of apples and/or celery you will surely have a great list of what to do differently next year.

  2. Boo is adorable! I miss my golden Maisy…she passed two months ago from lymphoma. I have finally stopped crying a river… sigh….she was only five years old. I love it when they smile!

  3. Have you considered foraging for things like dandelions, plantago, lemon balm, chicory, nettle, thistle, sow thistle, etc? Some of them are in their bitterest late season stages, but around here many of them are starting to sprout too, from the earliest spring seeds that went out. We have some dandelions flowering again, and little green edible weeds popping up all over!

  4. here is a very good recipe and i think you have the ingredients. finely dice celery and onions. make a simple vinaigrette made with a bit of honey in it. mix the celery and onions with it and serve it over the potatoes. heavenly!

  5. Your photographs are amazing today, Celi.
And you have brought to mind the true meaning of the saying “Slim pickings.” So close. You will manage.

  6. Celi, I know this might sound a bit crazy, but do you have any edible weeds? Sometimes when our garden is bare, we can still harvest chickweed or purslane. I know you can do clever things with dandelions, and there’s always nettle pasta or gnocchi. Just a thought…

  7. Piggy ears that only a mother could love 🙂
To add to the other delicious suggestions, if faced with celery, green capsicum (not my favorite either) slightly char grill the capsicum, dice the celery and toss with baked, boiled, steamed spuds, a little oil, mustard or whatever dressing you can cobble together, apple too… a fancy potato salad.

  8. I agree with Nancy, Waldorf Salad is yummy. Celery soup is a favorite here, too. Had to laugh at “show the picture to Boo.” How many times we’ve said that about a family member. The leghorn looks quite happy with Bob.
