The leaves are piling up and so am I.

I like the leaves, I never rake them.

The winds will come and deal with them soon enough. Until then I like the disheveled look of them. Their random falls and light shuffles. Shuffling light. Parchments and promises.

It is Saturday.  There will be lots of this!not-much-020

Sleepy time for babies. The Marmalade Cat is drinking out of a saucer now. It is a bright green saucer with an imprint of a fish on it. I felt it was appropriate.  He leaves little milky footprints all over the kitchen floor, not yet aware that we do not need our paws to assist our mouths to drink! Kneading the saucer will not elicit a rise in the tide. He is beginning to wash himself (Boo and I are intensely relieved) and has found his purr.  A good purr. Not the dying purr the happy purr.

Daisy managed to wack me in the head yesterday. My own fault entirely, I had thrown the hay into the Car Art feeder and then saw that a piece of baling twine had got itself thrown in as well. Both Daisy and I reached in at the same time to grab the hay and she grabbed a mouth full then whisked her head back and sideways sharply, to shake it free of the rest, unfortunately I was in the way. I ducked to avoid a collision grasping the twine at the same time and her 100 pound head only got me a glancing blow in the ear throwing me stumbly though almost neatly, against the fence and thankfully out of stomping range. And if there ever was a cow who would stomp it would be Daisy. I have to say I felt a little bit stupid for the rest of the afternoon. Not stupid.. as in what a stupid thing to do (which in fact it was!), but stupified and thick and tottery.  And I forgot to take any more images though the clarity of the light yesterday was intense like the pain in my ear.

No bruises or swelling. All good.  I shone a torch in my eyes to check for concussion but was  blinded by the light  so I could not see what my pupils were doing anyway. See what I mean? Not right in the head.

In a week I am going to go and spend a few days in California with my son and his family. I am going to pack my wee chilli bin bag with a variety of frozen meats, put a spare pair of knickers in my handbag and then Camera House and I will  fly across the country to the Central Valley  in California to cook and eat and chat and adventure. I will not be alone for four whole days. But I will not be leaving you alone. We will be having guests on the blog. It is a surprise – there are things being worked on behind the scenes! Busy. Busy.

I will tell you more about it next week.

Today I am going to make more soap. I love this soap!

Have a glorious day.

your friend,

  1. Oh, C…I can hear the Old Folks now…
    “What happened to her?”
“Cow whacked ‘er in the head…she hasn’t been right, ever since…”
And they shake their heads sadly….
    Have a less-painful day today 🙂

  2. Ya must be careful. There are a good many parts to our bovine friends that are a great deal harder than ours. Hooves. Hip bones. Heads. As long as the fuzzy feeling continues take it easy. Concussions are not something that go away if you ignore the pain. This summer I was drastically slowed down after a run-in with a fresh cow. About 10 days before I started to feel normal again. Don’t push yourself listen to what your body tells you.

    • My body tells me to get off my bottom and back to work! Too much sitting in front of the computer is bad for the ears.. thank you for caring joy, and thank you fro not telling me off for putting my head next to a feeding cows! c

  3. Hope she didn’t burst your eardrum – flieing will be painful if she did. Boo looks like he is licking his chops before a little snack in photo no 2 🙂 Rest up a bit this weekend. Laura

  4. Oh Celi, you poor dear, being side head-butted by Daisy. I am incredibly excited about our little Marmalade who is clearly going from strength to strength with each day and how exciting about your trip. Looking forward to seeing what you have install for us as far as the guests go.
    Have a beautiful farmy weekend.
    🙂 Mandy xo

  5. I envy your tolerance of leaves! I’ve been raking all morning. I don’t mind the untidiness so much, it’s that many of them fall on the flagged paths in the duck part of the garden and are seriously slippery when wet! I’m not known for my grace and co-ordination and the last thing I want is to be flat on my back in leaves and duck poo!

    • matter of safety over there. here I am on a prairie, the wind blows them somewhere else, they never gather, in fact I tell all my town friends to bag theirs and give them to me!!c

  6. Ouch! Hope you’re ok this morning. I’ve been putting off raking the mountains of leaves here in Van and Robert’s been putting off the seven giant maples in OXON. Groan. Here, I can;t get away with leaves so much because I live in a Truman Show hood.but the village in England isn’t so fussy. I just got away myself for three glorious, stress free, warm days in San Francisco. Such a lovely treat.. Take loads of photos. 🙂

    • If you have room in your garage, the best thing to do with leaves is jam them, when they are a little damp, into big rubbish bags, pop them in the garage and forget about them for a YEAR. They are brilliant for your garden. Though now that i think about it you most certainly know this anyway, so maybe you do not have the room, c

  7. I do hope that you will get your ear checked out asap…you did make me laugh tho trying to do a self diagnosis. ? But ears are delicate things. Poor Daisy , I bet she felt bad after injuring her best friend.
Marmalade is coming on well..all due to your dedication and care, and Boo of course.

Off for a ‘naughty ‘ weekend away eh…I think that it is well deserved..it will be exciting finding out who is standing in for you.

Don, t forget to sort out your ear

    Love P

      • Darlings, love you but as you know i swore off doctors 24 years ago. And it is saturday. I most certainly am not going to go to a US emergency room because my cow donged me on the head!! So stop worrying, I have my phone in vivs little baggie! c

        • I avoid doctors if I can…yearly mammo, ultrasound and bp meds. Kevin calls me Howard Huges! “Okay Howard…whatever you say Howard!” Gloves! And mask when we do the wheat! GF here! 😉 This is why I work so hard in my gardens and storing my own chem free food! If God intended me to live on chems he wouldn’t have painted the world with natural healthy food! IMHO! 😉 A garden witch here! With violets, rosemary, and yarrow to attract faeries and apple trees for love and health! Nothing more joyful than a fairy circle with wind chimes, butterflies, bees, and hummers! Ah the beauty of nature and a little magic! 😀

  8. Whoops…so intent on your ear..forgot to say about leaves,
We get loads in our garden from our neighbours trees and it is necessafy to clear them up as our dogs poop in the same place…so for hygiene and clean carpets..they get picked up and burnt..but makes a lovely bonfire

  9. I find myself wanting to write ouch on my of my dear friends’ blogs so I’ll restrain myself. But oh my, that must have hurt. You really ought to go to a doctor Celi, head injuries are very serious.
Very glad that the marmalade kitty is doing well, BooNanny must be taking very good care of him.

  10. I love the photos of Boo and Marmalade this morning!!!! Such a good pup! So tender and loving to little puss puss!!! I have a warm feeling in my heart…sigh… 🙂
Celi! That must have been most painful! I used to hit my head on my sailboat all the time! Sunburn or hat, sunburn or hat. Hat won! But oh my head!!! 😉 What a wonderful place to visit! Warm, sunny and great company! Family! 😀
p.s. I don’t rake my leaves either! The music of the rustle and colorful whirling leaf dance on the lawn! It’s fall! Why stuff the prettiest part of it in a black leaf bag? Makes no sense to me!
    Take care! (((Celi))) 😀

  11. Geesh! After reading some of the other posts…I am worried about your ear and head! Please let us know how you are later in the day! ok?

  12. Our daughter just managed to get a severe kicking from her horse. Like yourself, she sort of realised what was happening and partially got out of the way. Luckily the horse is not shoed on the back feet. I have no cows or horses in my office…no point in taking chances.
