The Cuteness Factory

Not too many words today. Words seem to tax my brain and my back more than images and hay bales do when I am tired. 123kune-and-hereford-020We are building up to Busy here and every step I take I have to take with care making sure my feet go into metaphorically firm ground. My mind must be wired for sound or one of the balls will fall. Soon it will all be second nature. But for the moment I must have my mind turned on.

The dogs and I kept out of the barn yesterday, except for quiet baby feeding and of course the milking very early. Queenie settled down significantly and yesterday allowed me to give her calf his selenium shot, and put his coat on. He will wear the coat for a few days. We are still down in the thirties at night and as the optimum temperature for a calf is 50, I don’t want a calf to waste good energy keeping warm.  Of course it is not essential but I can so I will. He should  not need it for long (fingers crossed). Today I will open Queenie’s door again. She does not like to be shut in and wherever she goes that calf will go with her.  But her door is on the North so  I am careful.123kune-and-hereford-046 123kune-and-hereford-051

I don’t know how the poor chap keeps his eyes open with eyelashes that long.

The winds were heaving outside so the dogs and I chose to work indoors. Tima had to follow us all over the house.  Though I think it was the other way round. I swear she had long invisible leashes attached to the dogs and wherever she went they were towed along behind.

See how she has two black feet and two white feet. Under her chin are tassles; these are called piri piri. Remember to roll your r’s. 123kune-and-hereford-003 123kune-and-hereford-011

But all good things must come to an end. If Tima wants to go to the toilet she goes back to the toilet corner in her room, she is very good like that and if she gets tired she just takes herself back to bed. This is an entirely different kind of pig. Quiet.  And very, very smart.

Now I am off out to work.

You all have a lovely day

  1. Good morning! Your little Tima is a doll; but I am oh-so partial to Hereford calves. 🙂 A most wonderful, busy, time on your farm. I hope the wind isn’t howling today at your place like it is here this morning.

  2. That is one very good looking little calf from Queenie. He has a great face and seems very interested in all that is going on. Cecelia , you must get exhausted – and you never ever get a day off. But you do have a beautiful farm family.

    • Moments after he was born his head was up looking about, he is a very aware calf, which is good.. No days off until october.. but thats ok.. c

  3. I had a 7:00 haircut appointment this morning, but my barber called to say he was running late so I dashed to the computer to quickly read an update! How wonderful that I could get a dose of ” the cuteness factory” before heading out! These babies, and the mamma’s make for a sweet start to my day! What is the intended purpose of the piri piri? Very unusual!

    • I have no idea why the piripiri are there. Sometimes an animal will be born with only one and sometimes none at all. Usually they have them though.. I need a haircut too.. I am looking more and more llike that clown in the Simpsons.. maybe next week c

    • Morning Audrey, i think he is a mixture of breeds so i am not sure which one is promoting this trait. But he and Ton definitely have different reactions to small animals. Boo lets the little pig sniff and nibble him all over, staying very still .. they are both under my chair at the moment .. sleeping in the sun, unbelieveable.. c

      • We had a part blue heeler for many years and he had these tendencies for ‘care giving’ as well. I wonder if it is part of what makes them herd so well? Taking care of the flock, as it were?? All the babies are so cute. Thank you for your efforts to share with us.
