Did I tell you that Queenie Wineti has six teats? Another less than perfect animal who is just perfect. She was one of a pair of twins. Sold as a very young calf. The vet said they will be no trouble and they have not been. This does happen sometimes and they offer to cut the teats off, but the idea made me shudder so I let nature sort it out. Of course they did not fill and as her udder grew they disappeared. That is a funny story to start the day on isn’t it. It was such a quiet day yesterday.
And her wee calf is growing well. So there are no problems with feeding. Just another example of a healthy animal doing well regardless of her problems.
Scrapper.
Marcel with his serious look. He is down to one bottle a day and is less than thrilled.
This would have been a very sweet shot if one of my scoops had not blown into their pen. Oh how we long for grass so they can all go outside. Not for a while yet though.
The two plonkers.
Yesterday was a coolish day, which suits the large animals but not me. Still, it might be sunny today. The peacocks are all getting on well. No troubles up in their Peacock Palace. Tima is roaring about the place eagerly tipping over every bucket she sees. That little pig shoots up and down her ramp. Sheila and Poppy went out for a walk in the fields, though Poppy was reluctant to go back into their pen. But I did not want her out long enough to discover all the escape hatches. Not until she is better trained anyway.
Actually I worked on lots of different things yesterday, as well as farming, I sent out another batch of calendars, worked on our book, (if you have not had an email from me let me know) made the Monday loaves of kefir bread, revved up the starter for sourdough buns, started a pot of yoghurt and made some ice cream for the freezer (we eat it all winter) . Today I will drive about the countryside collecting the pig buckets and later on make another batch of butter. I eat some and freeze some. I love butter.
I hope you all have a lovely day.
Your friend on the farm

How many teats do cows normally have? Four? Me ignorant citygal. And never thought to count Daisy’s.
And oh how big your boys are. It must be so much fun to give Marcel a bottle. How do you do it? Do you sit down with your arm around him. I don’t suppose he lays his heady in your lap.
And the first picture of Sheila and Poppy is so cute.
Marcel stands in front of me, with his feet up on the gate and drinks as fast as he can, fast! Cows have four teats, sheep and goats have two.. funny the things you never think about isn’t it!.. c
Yep, butter. Butter is why they invented bread, I’m sure. My Mom always gave us margarine thinking it was better for us, but my paternal Grandmother was like “no grand babies of mine are going to grow up without eating the real thing.” I remember when I first tasted it. It was heaven. Your kefir bread looks like the bread for me. I’m going to try it before week’s end.
I remember the first time I had margarine…then I remember the many, many years I worked in the large Kroger grocery store…did you know you DO NOT have to refrigerate margarine…nope one step away from plastic does not have to be chilled. The groceries only chill it because people think it has to be cold…like butter.

Loving your captures – makes me think about the farm I grew up on with the various animals:) Happy Day On the Farmy!
You ran circles around me yesterday! I hate to even confess this but I took a big, giant nap in the afternoon! I rarely do that but it sure did me a world of good! I love these photographs… you make me smile every morning!
So busy! Marcel is such a cutie 🙂
Queenie’s calf looks so big already, though in contrast I suppose Daisy is that much taller 😉
Is Queenie’s Bobby headed to you for a treat? He looks very intrigued and focused!
just nosy..
C: I haven’t received an email re book from you; but meanwhile am enchanted with all the photos! best to you
That picture of Queenie and her calf look posed as if you said “Now you stand there and you, Bobby move over just little bit and look at the camera and say Cheese”. Does Marcel eat hay in addition to his milk? We used to just hang a bottle of milk replacer on the fence for our lambs and they took what they wanted, free choice, Never overate that way cause it was always available. I would give anything to have access to farm fresh raw milk. We used to know an older fellow that milked his cow every morning and fill gallon mayonnaise jars and keep that in his old fridge and we would leave the money and take a jar. All hush hush cause it was illegal even then to buy or sell raw milk. Unfortunately he died of old age years ago and have not found anyone else. (sigh). That organic milk we buy in the store is a dead product with all the ultrapasturization. All the good enzymes have been killed and denatured. Oh, don’t even get me started on that! Are the plonkers still not happy?
Once upon a time there was a big pig and a little pig, and when they went out walking to check that all was well on the farm, Big Pig would tell Little Pig stories of the old days…………….. lovely post today. Autumn is creeping in here, I had to wear a cardi last night…..still hot days though.
I just can’t get over the size difference between Poppy and Sheila. It’s incredible. I’ve just read over a few days of posts (I’ve been AWOL for a bit) and it’s so good to see all of these happy animals and know that your spring is on the way, albeit a bit slowly.
I’m interested in the menopause book, so I’ll read over that post better tomorrw and drop you a line. Says Marie who started her periods at age 10 and is STILL as regular as clockwork at age 57. Please tell me it will stop sometime soon! 🙂
If only we all let nature take care of itself more. Such busy times for you, down on the farmy.
So Queenie’s got 2 extra teats. What’s the big deal? I’ve got 2 nipples and they’re just as useless. 😀
Looks like things are finally settling a bit on the farmy. Warmer weather would be nice but, for now, the little ones have made friends and I sense a rhythm returning. After the vents of the last couple months, that would be wonderful. Have a great evening, Celi.
Wonderful are the days when all the bits and pieces come together 🙂 I remember the kefir bread post but somehow missed the butter recipe… have filed both for not so distant future reference.
Every day it seems those babies have grown from the day before. Beautiful calves. Like Queenie, most of us have our oddities, but we manage in spite of them. She seems to be a good mother.
