What Do You think This is?

These shots were taken in the night by the wildlife camera. It seems that there is a blow out in the center of the camera’s field, which is making it hard for us to see what is there. Whether this is because of the white building (though there is not much white left on that side) or the camera itself I don’t know.  But there was definitely something there.

The header has been enhanced. This are the original shots.nothing-005

Later this (I have enhanced this one too) .

I am fairly sure this is Scrapper. Cool shot actually. Thank you wildlife camera.

Sadly, although we have had no more break-ins,  two more old chickens died today, not a mark on them,  just laid down and died in the chook house in the daylight.  They had been looking a bit puffy at breakfast.  Poor old things.  I have no idea what to make of that.

Good morning. Weirdly the remaining chickens are laying extremely well.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. Short legs, bushy tail, black with white stripe. Skunk. But where did it get in? If the rest of the girls are laying well, it seems unlikely they’ll keel over too. How was your yummy rosemary and pumpkin seed bread?

  2. Threnody for dead chickens,

    They were
    murdered in their prime
    by a gangster marauder
    unidentified.
    A job for a detective
    plus thermal image camera.
    He’ll identify the hood
    who did this vile deed,
and sort him out for good.

  3. Love the picture of Scrapper but not so much the pictures of the mystery visitor. Hmmmm. Sorry about the other two girls you lost—-that is another mystery on the farmy for sure. I think you need a watch dog out there!!!

  4. I’m in the definitely it’s a skunk camp. These are outside or inside pictures? I’m thinking outside based on the side of the building in view. I think angling the camera a little or diffusing the flash should help with the glare. I think trail cameras have a pretty strong flash . Maybe it was just the chickens time to pass away, you said they were old. If they were young chickens they may have gotten egg bound which I have been told can be brought on by stress. I don’t know if the stress part is true, but being egg bound can kill a hen. More light can help egg production. Grandma use to leave a light on in the chicken house in the nest area in the winter to promote good laying. The roost area was never lit, chickens need sleep too. lol

  5. Really cool pix of Scrapper – Halloween-ish.
I’ll join in the chorus about the other photos, for it surely looks like a skunk to me.
Sorry about all the chooks, and these two today.

  6. The shots are interesting…the first two do look like a skunk to me but the last is definitely cat or some sort!
Your daily diary of life on a farm is so captivating and refreshingly real. The cycle of life is there on a daily bases. Us Townies are more separated from it! That said I have a cat, 2 dogs and a flock of doves and lots of other birds that visit my garden daily.
I have been meaning to tell you that I look forward to your daily updates. It reminds me of listening to the Archers when I lived in UK. Do you know the British radio show the Archers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Archers. It is the longest ruining radio show in UK. In 1997 I lived in London for a year waiting for my (now ex) husbands H1B1 visa. We had no car, Telly and I couldn’t work. Any way we lived in a coldwater one room bedsit where you but 50p in the meter to run the lights and 25p to run the gas fire. I am from Southern California and it was like going back in time. Some how I stumbled on to the Archers and it was so engaging. A good study in British country life in a way! You daily saga and charming photos are just as captivating!
Thank you for your generosity in giving the world a peak in to your life on a farm! Blessing to you and all the animals!!!

  7. About a month ago, I found one of my hens (only about a year old) dead in the hen house. No mark on her, she showed no signs of illness (beak, eyes, nasal passages all clear.) I never did figure that out, and the rest of the flock are doing fine! You chook deaths sound very similar..very strange.
