Never say never

Sometimes I stare at the Title Space and nothing enters my mind. Actually I often stare with nothing in my mind but we all know that by now.

‘Never say never’ sprang to mind last night when I began to load this page.  There are always hiccups along the way.  Not major ones. just little ” hicks hicks in cups”. I think it is good to know that things are not meant to go smoothly so we can then gird our loins for the incoming little hicks.

But as my Senior Son said to me the other day “First World Problems.” Thinking of it that way puts a lot of things into perspective. My first ‘First World problem’:

Tane was refused at the border because his cage did not meet the new specs. So now he is coming late tonight instead of last night. Tima is trying to be stoic. Jake is coming with me to the airport, so at this point, we are still full steam ahead.  Same team – different day.  And we will borrow The Matriarchs big jeep to accommodate the bigger crate.

Queenie has a new bull offer. He is from across the tracks and not a terribly trendy beau but she needs a bloke. He is a Holstein. A Holstein is like a Fresian.  It is an accepted cross (Hereford/ Holstein)  and he was a small baby, does not have a large frame and throws small calves.  The vet has agreed in the absence of a good beef bull (and we are running out of time) it should be OK –  so on Friday she will be loaded up into the black mariah  and hauled off to live with her new fella for a while.

She calved a good sized calf without trouble last time so I hope this works. Everyone I spoke to has already shipped their bulls. Maybe I should get my own Hereford bull. This is what I am thinking. But I need a few more Hereford cows first. And more grass.

Isn’t Aunty Del looking lovely.

Poppy is banging on the gate. She always does this when she is coming into heat. She and Queenie cycle at the same time. Like sisters in a house.  It is a noisy weekend. Though hopefully we get Queenie to her bloke before it is too late. And Poppy is left to make a racket all by herself.

There she is banging on that gate again.  I have seen her wack the gate (and it is only ever this gate) with her food dish – maybe she will do that tomorrow. In December we will breed her.

I put an old  hat rack in the shed. (The shed is like a purgatory for old stuff on it way to the recycling –  I intend to remake this into a mirror for the wall – one day.) But in the interim the guineas have discovered it and spend a good deal of time checking their reflection”Does my arse look fat in this?” I can hear them saying.  At which every other bird in the vicinity makes a run for it. NO-ONE want to answer that question. Guinea fowl hold grudges.  (Once again I had the wrong lens on the camers for that shot – but out of focus or not it is too funny not to share!)

I hope you all have a good day.

Your friend – back on the farmy.

ps. Did I tell you that there is a rumour of Snow on Friday!? Horrors!

  1. I want to plant a big ol kiss on Aunty Del’s forehead. She just looks so sweet. And I must be part Guinea Fowl as I frequently as that of my mirror too. And the family goes running. 🙂 Good luck with they boys today! I hope the piggie gets there and the bull and Queenie get along fabulously!

  2. Good morning, c! We have a slow, dripping fog here that’s burning off finally. And it’s warm outside: 16C. It feels just icky outdoors. Peculiar, even. Why does Poppy pound that gate? Is it for noise?

    • That made me look back, I toook a shot of them all yesterday and forgot to put it in. Sorry about that! He is getting too big for his boots marcel is. i need to watch myself in the field with him. But he has a wonderful coat so if i have to sell him to the man over the hill (he and his wife want to buy them all nd they have a much bigger flock) I won’t sell them ’til after they are sheared.. Marcels coat will make a lovely jumper!.. c

  3. Aunty Del is the most beautiful little heifer… Such a gorgeous red and white coat, and a peaceful, innocent face. Unlike those wicked piggies of yours, all three of them. I’m very glad Tima is being stoic about the continued absence of Tane. I’m wondering if she’s going to henpeck her new husband, or whether in time he’ll get the upper hand. God forbid he should be just as naughty! And I wish we could send you a nice Murray Grey bull for Queenie; I think they’d make lovely bobbies together!

  4. Purgatory – good catholic word 🙂 It is sweltering 37*C/97*F here today! Snow would be welcome for a little while. Farmy vehicles are going to be wearing ruts in the road to the airport soon, hope you are successful tonight. Laura

  5. Queenie seems to look more massive with each new picture-wish I could see her in person to really judge the size- I do hope she doesn’t scare off suitors for your sake. Snow…perhaps our western torrential rain has something to do with that prediction-those clouds must be picking up the middle states cold and threatening flakes rather than big wet drops

    • she does look particularly scary from that angle.. hopefully she settles down enough to breed.. I have to say she is a pretty good advertisement for grain free – grass fed beef!

  6. Oh dear, you’ll be tired of to-ing and fro-ing for Tima’s husband. I hope he’s looked after well in between. That peahen is hilarious. Mind you, I’ve heard that showing off isknown as peacocking! Is there such a word as peahenning?
    Love,
    ViV x

    • morning ViV, Tanes breeder took him back home for the night to change him into bigger cage, she said he rode really nicely in her car so that is a good thing.. c

  7. Got a laugh over the hat rack in the shed – have seen so many barn tack rooms/sheds with furniture “waiting”. They are like anxious ghosts.
Back and busy. Bet all the creatures are glad all their people are accounted for and things are as normal as they get.
(A real horror story that snow forecast – we may actually have a cool-ish Halloween which is unusual…normally kids sweat like crazy in costumes and the little one start peeling pieces off after a block or so.)
    Take care!

  8. Yeah, I’ve got the first world problems, too. I often remind myself, “No whining on the yacht!” Fingers crossed for the pick-up tonight.

  9. That guinea fowl is too funny. Looks like an old man at the second hand clothing shop trying on a used winter coat. Queenie is living up to her name. So self-possesed…Is that Lady’s Mantle that Tima is romping around in? You must get a lovely crop of bright green flowers. I love those.

  10. ah the world problems! No matter how wrong everything goes it can never be as bad as world problems…so smile, pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and start all over again…..
If Tane is a big boy and needs a bigger cage…wow..isn’t Tima going to have fun!
Poor Queenie has to settle for second best, but being a small guy doesn’t always mean that he can’t perform well. My first husband was fairly small(as men go) but I got no complaints!!!!
Aunty Del is indeed looking very beautiful with her love rust coloured coat and definite white markings, a beauty Queen in the making
and as for Poppy…she is a real scream and just makes me laugh…a good thing when you can find her a good man pig. It will keep her quiet for ages!
Keep Smiling C you have coped with worse than this…and this is only temporary , the world problems are not

  11. Snow! Bloody hell! It’s 19º C in London today and supposedly 21º tomorrow.
It’s great to see the animals after your holiday. I missed the pigs and there’s something about Queenie that makes me want to stroke her head. I hope she enjoys visiting the bull 😉
