The rain has brought forth mud and growth. The good, the bad and the ugly.
“Roses have thorns, and silver fountains mud; …”
Mud at this time of year is especially messy because the ground is cold below the slight thaw and often still frozen under there, so the mud churns up shallow and slippery.
The thaw will not last long – more cold is coming.
But Sheila and the other pigs are making the most of it.
Not all the pigs though – Tima and Tane are sticking close to home.
The sprouts are just beginning to sprout. They are at the knitting stage. As the roots grow the mat of sprouts knits together so the slight angle I have the trays on, to encourage drainage, will work better. Initially, they slide about a bit as I water.
Make sure your seed bed is no more than an inch. Be very generous with the watering. And fastidious about drainage. Tip your tray away from the holes at the end when washing so you can really flood the seeds. With each level of trays tipping slightly in the opposing direction, and the holes in one end only, you can arrange the trays so the runoff water runs into the tray below from the trays above. In a re-washing torrent. Every tray is washed individually and thoroughly then settled on a slight tilt to drain into the trays below. When my shelves arrive this will be so much easier but for the moment I am creating the tilt with sticks.
They are growing very slowly though. (Though only the oats – the barley refuses to sprout at all and was dirty and very hard to get really clean). By day SEVEN the sprouted fodder will be fed out to the animals. By Day EIGHT the sprouts start losing nutrition, then they will start to rot and anyway, I will have run out of space. So I am hoping we get some good growth by then. We will see. My house is not kept very warm.
Above is Day THREE.
Today I start sunflower seeds soaking. I will eat these sprouts too!
I hope you have a lovely day.
