Indulge yourself! One day old Lamb Triplets.

Mama and her three lambs are doing well now.

Though we had a fright in the afternoon yesterday when Mama started limping badly.

Then would not get up to feed. You will remember that she has a chronic problem with inflammation in one of her hooves.

Being down meant that she was not feeding her two lambs.  Who quickly went from hungry to sleepy. I watched her try to get up and they zoomed in for a drink, then with a great sigh she collapsed again, lambs bouncing out from under her. I gave them all a wee sip of milk replacer.

Then made a fast trip to the vet for an antibiotic injection and after a few hours she revived. I topped them up for her in the interim.  This worried me as I did not want them depending on me for food and leaving her milk undrunk.

But with coaxing she was up again and eating and drinking and the lambs fed well in the night. Minty is doing well on her bottle. She is still in with her family and I just pop in and feed her every few hours. So all through the night I get up, get dressed (in a manner of speaking) and yawn my way out to the barn with my tiny bottle of warm milk, then back to bed.

A new born lamb can consume two to three cups of milk replacer a day. This needs to be spread over twenty-four hours. I prefer to err on less at this point as over feeding can cause scours. Scours can kill a tiny animal very fast.

So I feed tiny bits often. Feeding every few hours all day and right through the night makes me feel envious of these guys.

Good morning. I think that the lambs and their Mum had a very good night. Each time I went out to feed Minty, Mama hauled herself up and fed Meadow and The Murphy as well. During our last feed, in the wee hours of the dark morning, Meadow drunk enthusiastically without having to be carried to the milk bar and coaxed onto the teat.  This is a great relief.

It is 5.45 am and Minty is not due for a feed until 7am. So after doing the early morning chores, I will have time for a hot coffee before waking them all up.  I am hoping that Mama will be well enough to take her babies outside later today.  Her sunroom pen opens onto one of the little home paddocks and she needs to get back on the good clean grass.

I hope you all are going to have a lovely day. We will.

Good morning.

    • Morning greg, yup That is TonTon when i am in with the lambs, he would be over that gate in a second if i called him but he has been told to stay out! Mama tries to head but him.. c

  1. Gorgeous babies! So, there is no chance Mama will start letting Minty feed? I am curious how this happens, can you explain a bit more?

    • Minty got the boot, maybe deep down Mama knows she cannot feed them all and chooses who she feeds. I don’t know. She has never been much good at feeding more than two. And when I was holding Minty on in the early hours so that she could get the colostrum, Mama would move away, or try and scrape her off with her foot. I did not try too hard once she had got her early feeds, as i knew I would adopt one or two to share the feeding between us. They all stay together as a flock though, I have not taken Minty out.. c

  2. What a great surprise to wake up to such a beautiful post, cuteness all around… it is a ton of work, you are amazing to do it all, but the reward of having a happy new family of lambs around is certainly worth the effort

enjoy each moment, and keep the posts coming… 😉

    • TonTon is beside himself, But Mama has run him off on more than one occassion now. She won’t let any dogs near. Though she does not mind the cats! c

  3. okay total city girl question here: but do sheep always only accept two lambs to feed? You acted like you knew that one (at least) of the three would have to be bottle fed, yesterday and it got me wondering why…

Wonderful photos as always…from when my babies were young how i remember the sleeplessness. Hang in there…

    • Good question Melissa. Last time Mama had three to feed, one just fell through the loop and was woefully underfed because of her two pushy brothers. This was Mia. And I had to play catch up to try and build her back up. Consequently she will always be the smaller, sicklier of the sheep. So this time I decided to take one (or two if all quads had survived) after they had had a day of colostrum. This way all three will do well. This also gives me a very tame lamb to take to the retirement homes with me to visit the old people. c.

  4. You’ve posted many pics of TonTon but this is perhaps my favorite, knowing what’s going happening on the other side of that fence. Glad to hear that Mama and her lambs are doing so well — and that you are, too. Have a great day, Celi!

  5. The photos are so beautiful..but you must be exhuasted! Are we humans the only “creatures” that don´t get up and start walking around an hour or so after being born?….animals are sometimes so much cleverer than us!

    • it is funny isn’t it and i saw a bit of bouncing about from the lambs yesterday evening, and it take a human years to be able to do that!! morning tanya! c

  6. Too cute. Lucky lambies …. with two ‘guard fathers’ to boot! Will Minty meet the Old Codger this week, will this meet with Mama’s approval? Laura

    • Minty will go to see The Old Codger the following week, she needs a bit of weight on her first.. I will start to take her in and out for short periods early next week so they get used to it.. c
