Indulge yourself! One day old Lamb Triplets.

Mama and her three lambs are doing well now.

Though we had a fright in the afternoon yesterday when Mama started limping badly.

Then would not get up to feed. You will remember that she has a chronic problem with inflammation in one of her hooves.

Being down meant that she was not feeding her two lambs.  Who quickly went from hungry to sleepy. I watched her try to get up and they zoomed in for a drink, then with a great sigh she collapsed again, lambs bouncing out from under her. I gave them all a wee sip of milk replacer.

Then made a fast trip to the vet for an antibiotic injection and after a few hours she revived. I topped them up for her in the interim.  This worried me as I did not want them depending on me for food and leaving her milk undrunk.

But with coaxing she was up again and eating and drinking and the lambs fed well in the night. Minty is doing well on her bottle. She is still in with her family and I just pop in and feed her every few hours. So all through the night I get up, get dressed (in a manner of speaking) and yawn my way out to the barn with my tiny bottle of warm milk, then back to bed.

A new born lamb can consume two to three cups of milk replacer a day. This needs to be spread over twenty-four hours. I prefer to err on less at this point as over feeding can cause scours. Scours can kill a tiny animal very fast.

So I feed tiny bits often. Feeding every few hours all day and right through the night makes me feel envious of these guys.

Good morning. I think that the lambs and their Mum had a very good night. Each time I went out to feed Minty, Mama hauled herself up and fed Meadow and The Murphy as well. During our last feed, in the wee hours of the dark morning, Meadow drunk enthusiastically without having to be carried to the milk bar and coaxed onto the teat.  This is a great relief.

It is 5.45 am and Minty is not due for a feed until 7am. So after doing the early morning chores, I will have time for a hot coffee before waking them all up.  I am hoping that Mama will be well enough to take her babies outside later today.  Her sunroom pen opens onto one of the little home paddocks and she needs to get back on the good clean grass.

I hope you all are going to have a lovely day. We will.

Good morning.

  1. Good Morning C,

I am tickled pink with these photos and your words..after knowing the great difficulties you, Mamma, and Mia, have been through, to wait for this very moment… I wouldn’t have words.., I could just see the contentment with a little smile and a sparkle in all of your eyes…

  2. So thrilled all is well on the farmy and the lambs are feeding and becoming strong. And that Mama is okay too. Not to rush on to the next batch of lambs so quickly, but I’m just curious, when will Mia be bred? In the fall? That’s when our goats will ‘freshen’ (do they call it that with sheep too) and be ready to be bred. xo

  3. Oh, such lovely pictures of your new family! I’m so glad that Mama’s back on her feet, such a worrying time with all those babies’ needs to fulfill. I think you need a badge saying, ‘Honoary Ewe’ for all your efforts!

Celi, You never cease to amaze me. I am in awe of what you are accomplishing and your future plans for Minty. ~ Lynda

  5. I hope Mama will allow TonTon in to see the babies at some point! He seemed so protective of her while she was pregnant. And those lambs? Oh. My. Goodness. Is there anything cuter?

Hope you are able to at least sit on the porch and put your feet up with a nice glass of wine this afternoon.

Have a wonderful day and hug those little lambies for me!

    ~April

  6. Glad to hear Momma is improving and doing such a good job feeding those babies. Thanks again for dropping by my blog and making such a valuable comment. Have a great day!

  7. I think what I love most is that all of your animals seem to be abuzz with curiosity and longing to meet their newest friends:) Love all of these photos again today! I can’t wait til your baby lambie gets to go visiting the seniors:) Just imagine them feeling that downy little silky coat of Minty’s 🙂 xoxoxoxo

  8. Never did I expect to be so enthralled with farm pictures and stories, but I have to say they are one of the highlights of the morning. 🙂 The lambs are so precious and love the pic of Ton Ton!

  9. This is such a wonderful way to welcome in spring! The lambs look so sweet. You have great energy, Celi to be doing all the work that you do with such dedication and passion. Always so great to read your posts. All the very best, again. Hope you get some time to also sleep while the little lambs do. This must be incredibly hard work but worth the effort I’m sure.

  10. I don’t know which photo to select today – the one with the chook for the colours or the one of Mama looming into shot or the cats living the high life or TonTon peeringon wanting to play, or the lambies! I take it all these lambs are being kept as they’ve been named?
