Marauding pigs break into the chook-run

Then realised that the run is not where the food is and only the winter door was open, which is only big enough for a chicken.hij-006

And the netting that they had broken in through did not allow them to break back out.

So they called for help, and I had to lift the netting for them. They shot out (well Sheila ran straight out, Charlotte said In a Minute and had to check under just one more of the chickens rocks) then they ran back to their own comfortable and spacious pen in the barn for the night.

We all know who the ringleader was.  That Charlotte.  Sheila would never have hatched such a plan.hij-014

Mia is doing much better, thank you. She and Meadow are looking forward to some summer grass. So am I. However we have more cold and more snow in the forecast for today.  We are still hauling out bits and bobs of old wood from the barn loft and the back sheds and chopping them small enough for the fire. Between these finds, a little unseasoned wood and the builders off-cuts we can light a fire in the evening. We are still below freezing every night and the cast iron box keeps the house warm for hours after the fire dies. In the day time I just move fast.

I am seriously hoping that this is the last few weeks of winter though, I am heartily sick of having to put on a hat, gloves, the clown suit, 2 pairs of socks and boots and my increasingly tatty Carhart jacket over the five layers of T shirts, skivvies and jerseys I am already wearing inside, every time I step out the door. The sun straightens our bodies up like flowers. I want some of that soon. I want to be able to stand still without freezing to the ground like a wet bucket.

I hope you have a lovely day. Not long now. Spring is coming. It has to.

    • Did they eat any chickens? They are meant to be highly intelligent, maybe they were checking out the food you got for the chickens?!

  1. Silly pigs! Thank you for making me laugh this morning. I needed that. Yesterday was surely a teaser here, as the temps went up into the 60s and most of the snow melted. We had to scramble to vent the greenhouses, as one quickly climbed up to 100 degrees. Then we watered the baby lettuce sprouts. With all the sudden snowmelt, we were in a muddy mucky-muck mess too! Then, overnight, it froze again, and now they are talking about snow! March and April can be two of the cruelest months. Take heart though, Spring is just around the corner! Think of it, we will have instant weight loss when all those layers come off! And I am loving the progress on the Coop! All that lovely light and sun’s warmth in such a gracious space.

  2. Mia and Meadow look to be having a good chin wag. Lovely that Mia is doing well; that’s good news. We have sunshine this morning, blinding stuff that makes my head spin. Not accustomed to the warmth and brightness. Happy day to you all, and to you, too, c.

  3. We must hold on to that hope, that spring is coming. I write that as another layer of fresh snow brushes the earth and another significant “snow event” is in the forecast for Sunday into Monday here in Minnesota.

  4. What naughty piggies! Ha! 😉 I too (as you already know) have had it with winter! I can’t believe we’re getting more snow today.

Fingers crossed for next week I suppose. Have a good day and stay warm! ~ April

  5. 50F yesterday, and flurries this morning at our place…even the Little One is DONE with winter.
I want to move to the basement with the tomato seedlings – might improve my mood!
Piggies are too smart for their own good – or yours!

  6. The piggies just wanted to see how the other side lived!!! Cute pictures. I, too, am hoping that spring is coming. I will take the mud and slush and muckiness to this never ending snow and cold anytime!!!!

  7. Funny piggies. I can just hear them yelling for Miss C to come rescue them! We have a dusting of snow on the daffodils and Clifford would like more. He isn’t ready for winter to be done. I’M ready to PLANT!!! Have a great day Celi!

  8. I think it is time for some tough love with the Sisters. Take some old packaging from a pound of bacon and nail it to the last spot they used to escape. They’re smart girls, They’ll get the message.
Sun is out now but due to leave by 10:00 with snow to follow. Maybe it will be just a dusting. If, so, maybe I can clear the front beds tomorrow. Fingers crossed for the both of us. Spring is coming, Celi. Hang in there!

  9. “The sun straightens our bodies up like flowers.” Lovely. I’m so glad your fingers aren’t too cold for you to write! Hoping/praying for a real break in your weather soon! And tell those pigs I said to behave themselves.

  10. Spring really is coming. Colorado weather is to be lovely this next week, so it will float your way shortly. How is little Tilly? And fried eggs and coffee is my favorite breakfast too. 🙂
