How do you open a door?

I have always wondered this.  How do you open a door? Do you step up turn the doorknob, push the door in a little,  just wide enough to slip through, then shut it behind you.  This is what I do in the winter. In the summer the doors are open wide all day and all night long. So there is no need for opening and shutting. John will open the door and fling it back, crashing in through the space, then look surprised and reach back to retrieve the flying wide-open door and shut it with a slam.

I don’t know what made me think of doors.

Look at my big fat cows. Well, one cow and one heifer.  A cow is a cow once she has had a calf otherwise she is a heifer. Queenie is a heifer.

Typical Paisley Daisy carrying her calf out to one side. I still don’t believe Queenie is pregnant though she is eating like a gestating heifer. She is 21 days behind Daisy.

Our Sheila is still more beautiful than any of those Berkshires.  She got up out of her bed straight away this morning. Up and at ’em. I am hoping she will not come into heat for a few more days, so the leg she strained attacking the man’s prize Boar  (oops) is completely better. But you know how it is when you pull a muscle.

I went to the feed store yesterday and bought the oats, barley and wheat for my pregnant ruminants. Filled the feed  bins and no sooner had I turned my back but Pania was into it.   Gobble. Gobble. Naughty bird.  But I let them get away with all kinds of bad behaviour since they lost The Duke. First week of April we will go and look for another peacock. But reluctantly.

This  is my favourite picture so far this week. I might add it to the postcard collection.

I love that shot. My barn flock really is a murky bunch, but there you are, they are Our Murky Bunch.

Good morning.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Your friend on the farmy,

  1. I’m loving the expression on Sheila’s face. She having a chuckle at some private joke for sure!

I open the door and slip in quickly, holding on all of the time to stop the wind catching it. I’ve done it John style once or twice in the beginning, but I’m now super careful. Especially with the car door which thinks it’s a magic carpet in the wind 🙂

  2. Is there a general term for cows? I mean, “cows” are female, “bulls” are male, so what are they called collectively? And what would one single animal be? I think the barn flock photo is perfect. I would hang that on my wall.

  3. Thank you for sending the brutal wind south, but uh, we didn’t really need it. LOL I have sheets on the clothes line getting the fiber beat out of them! I am happy though, that you are getting a break from the wind and maybe a few degrees more of warmth. What a delightful day on the farmy… wish I was there with you!

  4. Love your pictures of the farmy today. We used to have a rooster like yours. His name was Clyde.

Your cows are beautiful. Can’t wait to see Daisy’s calf. Sheila looks contented now that she knows you still care for her and gives her treats and loving,

  5. I love The Murky Bunch photo and that lovely smiling Sheila! Wouldn’t one wall in the coupe look wonderful with framed portraits of the main cast members of the Farmy? With their Mama right in the center. love love!

  6. The Farmy looks sunshine & bright if a little cool, a respite for all, who do look happy about it. Doors… well… too many times I’m carrying more than I should so getting them open, and getting through can be a bit of a juggle using shoulders, hips & foot 🙂

  7. Once again I learned something new, as I had no idea what the distinction was between a cow and a heifer. So glad to see Miss Sheila looking so fine while enjoying her food, and love the shot of your Murky Bunch…you couldn’t have styled that shot any better if it had even been possible.

  8. The hens and rooster look as if they posed especially. And Sheila looks happy. Coming into heat in the freezing cold sounds like an odd thing to do, but I’m sure it’s ‘all for the best’, as my mother used to say.
