Peahen on the Barn

We had about three inches of snow yesterday, maybe more it is hard to judge. Then we had ice rain down on it, then it snowed again, then ice rained down on that. Then it got warm enough for the tops of the snow to melt a little, then it froze again.

So by late yesterday afternoon the snow was crunchy underfoot.

And this morning it will  be even crunchier.

I just cannot imagine anything growing here anymore. This long, long cold winter feels like a lifetime. Like we are in Narnia or something.

Good morning. The barn is quiet now without the plonkers who calmly rode off to the abbatoir. The money they raised will go to paying for a good amount of feed for the farm. I am pleased with them, they reached a good weight and were sturdy healthy animals. Just the sheep and the cows and Sheila now. And of course the birds.

Pania found herself on top of the barn yesterday, she sat up there for quite some time in a rather bemused fashion, occasionally honking for a ladder.icy-snow-017

Tired of waiting she flew to the roof of the house then down into the garden .icy-snow-029

Like the chickens the peahens hate the snow, so she had to be encouraged to fly back to the barn and inside again.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. Oh, lovely ginger Sheila, picking her way daintily through the snow with delicately pointed trotters. She reminds me of a ballerina who’s eaten too many pies… Still smiling too, happy to be back home.

  2. I love Sheila tip-toeing through the snow as though Sir Walter Raleigh ought to be on hand to lay down his cloak for her. Such a little diva 🙂

We have similar weather to yours and like you, I used the Narnia comparison, especially when I compared pictures taken in the summer with now. Everything looks lifeless and forlorn just now, which is why February is such a dire month. But today is Imbolc (half way between the winter solstice and the spring equinox), so we are heading in the right direction.

      • I agree! We had a very late spring as well (late May before the ground thawed), so a very short but intense summer. Everything arrived at once, so I felt abandoned at first, then overwhelmed by it all. My son visited from Australia in late April and there was still snow on the ground and no sign of even the first crocus or snowdrop. I’m choosing to ignore that groundhog and think positive, sunny thoughts 🙂

    • Hellebores! I love them. Do you think they would grow here? The dips you made for the shelter look amazing, sorry that once again I could not comment, I don’t know why it is but I have such trouble commenting on some blogger sites. c

    • Pania gave herself quite a surprise flying up there.. when they fly they more glide than fly, it is wonderful to see. It will be cold for a while yet, John said that Feb is usually one of the worst months. Thank you not very much I said.. c

  3. I laughed out loud when you said she honked for a ladder. Such personality you give your animals. Sheila looks very content and happy to be home.

      • OK we’ll go with less 🙂 Photos from the roof to come 🙂 you need a go-pro camera for that hen can you imagine the views she would capture! Stay warm! HUGS

    • well the scab came off this morning and it does not look too good, and it smells a bit. I have doused it again in antibiotic powder and will call the vet on monday.. I guess the dry scab was tricking me into thinking it was ok.. c

  4. Yep, snow is on its way here too, today. Not happy about it, but looking on the positive side that we need the moisture. Trying not to think about how long this winter has been, and fantasizing about spring. 🙂

  5. Narnia is the best way to describe this winter. I feel your pain. It is raining here now with promise of snow later this week. I can’t wait until gray and brown are no longer the predominant colors.

  6. Just think what Miss Pania was privileged to view way up there in that chilly, white world…miles of more white! Maybe she was hoping for a spot of green out there somewhere…

    • She wold have been honking and pointing her wing like a cartoon character if she had seen green..Maybe she will go up again and be our lookout. c

  7. Sheila’s picture made me giggle as she delicately walked her way through the snow. We only got a couple of inches and I think my sidewalks may actually be clear of ice finally. But I see another front is on its way and may dump some more. Is this winter ever going to end? According the Phil we will have 5 more weeks……give me strength.
